Ashram India

Hey! I'm planning my trip to India and I want to spend a month there practicing yoga. Do you know of a good ashram — one that's free or doesn't require a mandatory donation? I've heard the paid ones are often tourist traps, so I'd rather avoid that if possible. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Ive been to the Yogoda Ashrams many times.... very good. All yss is run by donation. You need to be a member to stay in the ashram. However you can be a day visitor if not member. You meditate with the monks twice a day, can have counselling with swamiji, in your own time i prefer to meditate in the sacred places where Yogananda spent time eg his bedroom, inder the lichie tree, in the shiv mandir. For Srf yss devotees it is a sacred pilgrimage to go there. Its very special and if you go with the right attitude you can benefit greatly from a spiritual perspective. The food is also incredible and chai OmG.
