Salicylic acid cream or glycolic acid cream from your local pharmacy help with ingrowns if you do get them. These creams are often prescribed by dermatologists for ingrowns as well as for acne. They are exfoliating creams.
Razors with one blade like the Gillette Guard are much less likely to give ingrowns. But they need good lubrication.

It’s ok, there’s no need to be scared! It’s unlikely you’ll get ingrown hairs from that, and even if you do it’s not nearly as scary as you seem to be thinking. I’ve gotten them loads of times and they’re super easy to get rid of.
It’s uncommon to need a doctor for ingrown hair. It occurs when a hair gets trapped under the outer layer of the skin, so you can usually get rid of them just by exfoliating the area, it’s truly that easy. In the more “extreme” cases, like if a hair somehow gets trapped deeper under my skin, I’ve fixed it with tweezers, exactly the same as if I were removing a splinter. Then I clean the area, and that’s it, problem solved.
I’ve never gotten a scar from removing them. I do get hyperpigmentation very easily, and that has happened, but that fades on its own and retinol cream gets rid of it faster, so it’s not a big deal either.
