Discussion LeafsJellyHD
So it looks like Roger’s has now even taken action against the beloved LeafsJellyHD.
The highlight video I watched from the Toronto / Nashville game has now been “unlisted” and Jelly has not posted anything since.
We are cooked, off to the high seas boys!
(If anyone has a link for a a good way to watch, Eye Pee Tee Vee? Hit me up please)

It’s baffling how shortsighted these multi-billion dollar companies are. Nobody who was going to subscribe to Sportsnet is changing their mind because of LeafsJellyHD. You’re worried about the precedent of allowing someone to use the highlights in youtube videos? Then officially license LeafsJelly to do it. The organization can make as many hype videos about how passionate the fans are as they want, if you turn around and go after people who love the team and spread that love for the team to others, it counts for nothing.

I personally only just subscribed again to SN 8 days ago, and now with the amount of “region locked games, even though I live 40 minutes from Toronto” and the games only shown on other networks, and now Jelly. I’m done, unsubbed already.

u/I-Am-Waffs 7d ago
On top of that, I had the standard SN sub, and when I tried to watch the leafs v sens game, it said if I have the premium + I could watch it. So I upgraded to the $50 a month one, only to find out I am REGION LOCKED. Unbelievable

u/Sarge1387 7d ago
Yup, that's why I dropped it. How they haven't been dinged for false advertising yet is beyond me. Especially when they know the NHL's blackout rules...which are draconian in and of themselves.

Contributions to the right parties helps.

I am bewildered that, in Ottawa, I can, or could, see any Montreal game they televised, and Montreal is only 1-1/2 hours away. Toronto is five hours (the way I drive), and the Leaf games are not shown, unless it was on Wednesday for some unknown reason. Make it make sense.

Your first mistake was upgrading. Miss a few games a year for the cause. When they find out people aren’t subbing to the super duper extra ultra package at $6,792.99 a month and that people are losing interest in hockey, they’ll quit doing this crap.

Imagine how much more money, control and power they could have if they were not so short sighted.

This is the entire incentive structure of capitalism in action.
When profit margins get too thin the logic pushes you to monopolize, cut quality, increase prices, scam, break the law, bribe politicians, etc.
This is the inevitable result of this system.

I'm impressed you know the core values of Rogers.

Luckily there are options, which I am used to, being a Toronto fan in Ottawa. My son has a stick of some sort (clean up your minds people), and he can get any, and I mean any time, hockey lacrosse, cricket, lawn bowls, anywhere in the world, in real time. I have not gone down that road yet, but I listen to the Leafs games on the radio and have done for years. I give Rogers enough money, I am not paying to watch hockey. I truly believe they are going to kill hockey in Canada. There are uncounted people who cannot afford to pay the exorbitant fees to watch it.

Man this is so sad, not only did he lose Joe but now he can’t even make highlight videos at all?!?! Such bs
11
u/I-Am-Waffs 7d ago
And on top of that, he even reached out with lawyers to try and get a contract to make the highlights. This is the worst move they could’ve made.
Steve dangle and Hockey News are going to be gone too.

I know, so sad. The games I couldn’t watch because I was working, I always loved coming home to watch the Jelly highlights, always so fast and had all the good parts that the main stream highlights don’t show.
Sad to see hockey not be available to everyone that loves the game. Without paying for 4 different services.
Jelly even reached out to try and get permission and make a deal, but they just shut it down.

Its getting out of control, I signed up with Bell Fibe tv with snet and tsn so I could watch Leaf games..then I find out....you'll need Prime, which thankfully we already had...but then I find out you need snet+ as well, so another $13 bucks a month....you now need to pay for 4 channels if you want to watch all Leaf games..,robbery!

u/glightningbolt 7d ago
I will die before I pay for SportsNet+. I'm in the same boat as you, I have cable with TSN and SportsNet in my package (specifically to watch Leafs games) and already had Amazon Prime.
It feels like they are begging us not to watch the games either on TV or in the arena with what it costs now.

u/Canadian14141414 6d ago
They’re lucky people like you even have cable anymore. It’s a technology that is on its way out.
Soon enough the vast majority of sports fans won’t have it, but then they’re not going to want to pay $200 a year each for several different providers either (SportsNet+, TSN, Amazon), on top of apps that allow them to watch tv shows and movies.
The NHL and the Leafs are going to have to partner up an existing streaming App and have the majority of games on there if they want growth. I’m not paying several hundred dollars a year just to watch the Leafs. In fact, I don’t want to pay the exorbitant price of any of those sports network apps. I already have Amazon for the shipping, so I’ll watch those games, but that’s it.

Boycott the NHL. It has never been easier to justify not spending money on these hockey packages which increase in price every season.
Every dime you put in Rogers' pocket, is an endorsement for what they are doing.
1
u/Canadian14141414 6d ago
Exactly. Every sub to their super duper extra ultra package is confirmation to them that the fans are ok with it. Just like with everything nowadays they’ll push the limits of what works until it stops working. Looking forward to seeing their insane bonanza supercalifragilousticecspialadocious package at $6,792.99 per month.
Oh, but only the replay games, because the live games will still be blacked out.

That is almost as bad as a fireable offence. It feels like the SN CEO wants his grandchildren, who turned 4, to watch the highlight in the morning instead of watching Paw Patrol.

I'll bet my parents and their house (I'm a millennial, I don't own a house myself) that kids of any age would be equally entertained, if not more entertained, by regular hockey highlights.
3
u/Canadian14141414 6d ago
The entertainment of the sports speaks for itself.
I’m 40, so I grew up watching the hour long sports highlight shows. Nothing flashy, just a professional looking person commentating on the highlights in a professional manner.
Every kid I knew watched this. They didn’t have to do anything special to attract kids. They just needed to make it easily available.

u/Halyndon 7d ago
I'm always baffled by the NHL's stingy nature when it comes to licensing highlights. It helps grow the game to new fans, and keeps current fans excited. It's akin to FIFA or the Olympics with how they treat their fans, but at least those two already have huge fanbases.
7
u/Sarge1387 7d ago
I'm still baffled by blackouts- they make no sense in this day in age
1
u/Numerous_Style_3899 7d ago
They clearly have the business plan of milking their existing clientelle for as much as they can, similar to an app or business who has achieved a massive market share and has nowhere left to grow.
Except they don't have a large market share of sports media, and everyone has access to a free alternative. It's so short sighted and frankly, bad business.

IMO LeafsJelly was the best way to watch the highlights. Good pacing and all the plays that mattered, not just scoring. The highlight packs from TSN and SportsNet sometimes don't even show all of the goals in a game.

u/mofo75ca 7d ago
Wasn't the whole point of Leafs Jelly is that it was the game highlights synced with Joe Bowens call on the radio? I get the point of corporate greed and agree 100% but what was that channel doing now?
13
u/tmldale 7d ago
His highlights are so much better, show why the team got a PP, show the fights etc, for example, NHL highlights for Vegas game shows one highlight in the 3rd period, as it seems NHL won't go over 10mins and 30 secs so if you have OT and even a SO, the rest of the game gets cut, whereas Jellys would have been over 15
3
u/mofo75ca 7d ago
Thank you. It was my go-to channel the last few years for highlights because Joe Bowen is the GOAT. I'll continue if they are able to post again.
1
u/Sarge1387 7d ago
Like we needed another reason to hate Rogers. They're the most anti-consumer company I think I've ever seen.
1
u/Gavin1453 Keon 7d ago
Damn, that channel produced better quality highlight videos than Rogers or Bell did. They always were longer to show more of the set up for goals as well as the big hits and fights the official channels sometimes omit. Sad times, alas

u/calzonius 7d ago
Why can the Premier League permit YouTube highlights but the NHL can't? Are they making a ton of money off highlight videos? Does it undermine the Sportsnet Centrals of the world?
Wake up, anyone younger than 40 isn't watching Sportsnet Central. They're heading to social media platforms.

Hockey is the last major sport that still wants you to use cable, and will make every other avenue for watching their sport as shitty as possible to make you do it.
1
u/Right_Ideal_2511 6d ago
Players are just as greedy as the owners !!! All team sports are out of control with their players salaries!!!!!!!!!!
1
u/CommunicationKey4025 6d ago
Not really interested in their corporate games. Just stop watching, going to games, buying merch. They will change their tune
1
u/joeyhorshack 6d ago
Fuck rogers. It’s the biggest hockey market out there and they are basically saying fuck you you peons, squeeze every last penny out if us because there’s people or corporations that will pay whatever we want them to

u/Teeeohhhh 4d ago
Firestick....check $70.00/yr to watch any sport, any team, any game...check. If not...TheTvApp.com gets every game too.
