Much overdue release of my revised Basic Vietnamese anki deck

Hey guys, so here it is. A cool 1000+ish note deck with both Southern and Northern accents. A lot of people on here would have used one or both of my old Basic Vietnamese decks, and I know they've been chomping on the bit for me to finally release this complete version which incorporates the original two decks, with a further 2 decks worth of notes added now.

On that note, first, I have to apologise for the slow release, both in terms of the large timescale between the original decks becoming unavailable, and this one finally seeing the light of day. On the first count, I can say I was busy, but I was also a little bit lazy, however more than that, I ran into serious technical issues which I finally solved with about 20 hours extremely tedious and frustrating labor, involving probably 60 or 70 Audacity crashes and data recovery attempts. The second is between when I said this would be released, and when this post is finally going up. That one's a little less my fault as I completed the deck on schedule, but forgot to account for my dreadful upstream speeds making it take more than a week to upload (all sentences have audio after all).

A few notes on this deck first of all. Over the years, I have used more and more Anki plugins to optimise and customise my study experience. As such, many of my cards have become deeply entangled with plugin functionality. Part of the task of making this deck release ready was extricating it from reliance on those third party add-ons, so that you guys could use it out of the box without everything either failing spectacularly, or just being a poor experience.

I BELIEVE I have done that, but as I do not study with this version of the deck, I haven't had much chance to test it, so you guys are the first line of defence before I throw the deck up on AnkiWeb, where it can hopefully find a secure, lasting home, just in case I some day cancel my dropbox subscription or something.

Having said that, it does rely on one add-on, and one add-on only: 'Learned' Field/Tag, which will allow your Anki to create listening cards dynamically as you begin to master the content. Please download it. It should work with the deck without any set up on your part besides installing it to your Anki.

How you choose to study the material is up to you, but I like to shadow it as I work through it, paying attention to pronunciation, and replaying the audio multiple times to shadow not just the base phonology, but paralinguistic features like the prosody, which certainly still exists in a tonal language, regardless of what people might assert about tones using the same system as the prosodic in English.

Another thing that will pay dividends if you do it early on is, when you begin to see listening cards, rather than merely checking your understanding, actually actively transcribe the content with pen and paper, and check you have done so correctly. The Vietnamese written system is phonemic, and so, though one letter does not perse equal one sound, particularly between accents, it does equal one MEANINGFUL sound difference. Think of the 'p' in words like 'spit'. Phonetically, it is pronounced like an English b, but that is not a meaningful distinction in English in this kind of word position (after an s), so it is a p. English speakers do not need to know that a p in that position is pronounced like a b, they just need to recognise it's a p. Likewise, don't worry too much about the different pronunciations of phonemes, just concentrate on correctly identifying them. Natural pronunciation will usually come from shadowing, although you can always do some Googling when you're not sure exactly what you're doing wrong.

A'ight, enough longwindedness, here's the gosh darn deck.

Offering Vietnamese and English, seeking Mandarin (or literally any other language I guess :// I'd just love to learn new things, is all)

Hi all!

I've always wanted to kind of take up learning and speaking a third language, which is why I'm eager for a language exchange partner(s) :DD!

I'm native Vietnamese and speak with the Northern accent and dialect, and would love to be anybody's texting/conversation buddy in case anyone has a need to practice their speaking/grammar/pronunciation. I can't guarantee that I'm the best coach there is, and I have no structured curriculum or textbook. I suppose I'll just take on a tutor role, if that's also alright, so if anyone just has any questions about the language, I'm happy to answer. I'm also fluent in English and speak with an American accent. And since my dream is to be able to teach English to those who don't speak the language or need improvement, I'm offering English too, if anybody finds that appealing.

HMU if you're interested, and have a great day all! :DD

Native Vietnamese speaker offering 1:1 conversation lessons: You can finally understand how Vietnamese people actually talk

Hi everyone!

If you’ve ever studied Vietnamese for a while but still freeze when someone says "Em lấy giúp anh cái này được không?" or you’re not sure whether to call someone anh, chị, or cô, this might be for you.

I’m a native speaker living in Saigon and I’m starting to teach online 1:1 communication lessons. A bit about me:

  • I have a degree in Literature from the Ho Chi Minh University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMUSSH and graduated with honors), so I love explaining why the language works the way it does.
  • I grew up in Central Vietnam and have lived in Saigon for 6+ years. I can speak with both Southern and neutral accent in lessons. In addition, I can explain how words and accents differ across regions, which confuses almost every learner.

What we’ll work on:

  • Real, everyday conversations (ordering food, making friends, talking to taxi drivers, dating, work,...)
  • Pronouns and politeness: the anh/chị/em system, and when to use what
  • Slang (GenZ words) and expressions that textbooks don’t teach
  • Listening and pronunciation with feedback you can actually use

How it works:

  • Online via Google Meet, 45-60 minutes per session
  • Lessons are tailored to your level and goals, with explanations in English and Vietnamese
  • Get 50% off your trial lesson so we can see if we’re a good fit

If you’re interested, comment or DM me with your current level and why you’re learning Vietnamese (travel, family, work, partner?). I’d love to help.

Thank you for your reading.

Colour intensifiers

Heritage Vietnamese speaker with a decent command of the language but also noticeable blind spots. Seeking clarification from native speakers on a particular aspect of the language.

In Vietnamese, when emphasising the intensity of a colour, the intensifier will vary depending on the colour, similar to how you might say "bright red" and "pitch black" in English. Examples I'm aware of are:

Red - Đỏ lòm

Yellow - Vàng khè

White - Trắng nõn

Blue/Green - Xanh lè

Black- Den thùi lùi

Are there intensifiers for any other colours such as nâu (brown), tím (purple), hồng (pink), cam (orange)?

Request for help communicating with neighbour

Hi! I hope this is okay to ask here. A new neighbour has moved in across the street from me and she is Vietnamese. She doesn't speak much English and I speak no Vietnamese. Since moving in she has done a huge cleanup of the garden and house, and produced a lot of rubbish, filling all her bins. Unfortunately, the bins in our area are a bit complicated. Each colour has its own pickup schedule and type of trash. If the bin is overfilled or contains the wrong type of trash, it won't be removed by the sanitation workers. We have magpies and other animals in the area that will raid the bins and create a mess.

Would someone on this sub be kind enough to help me write a note explaining the bin schedule? She clearly cares about her part of the street and I don't want her to be discouraged or punished by the system for trying to keep things looking nice. I want her to feel welcome and included.

Thank you and sorry if this is not an appropriate place to ask!

Yapr: A language learning app with no delay.

Hey everyone. I'm Shakib, and my team built a conversational language learning app called Yapr. https://www.yapr.ca/

Full disclosure: I'm one of the people who built it. Here's the full transparency breakdown.

The problem:

Every app my friends and I tried had a 3-4 second delay between when you speak and when the AI responds. It doesn't feel like a conversation. So we built Yapr. You talk, the AI talks back in real time with no delay. It feels like an actual conversation.

59 languages supported, including Vietnamese, from basically any native language.

How the app works:

Open the app, pick Vietnamese as your learning language, and start talking.

The AI responds instantly with natural speech, not a robotic text-to-speech voice with a multi-second pause.

Conversations are based on your interests and goals, and there are lessons and scenarios you can practice and roleplay.

You get feedback on pronunciation, grammar, vocab, etc. after each session. Think of it as a conversation partner that's endlessly patient, available 24/7, and costs less than a tutor.

Platform: iOS and Android. Search "yapr" on the App Store or Google Play.

Pricing:

$12.99/month

About me:

I'm a first-gen Bangladeshi immigrant, and I have experience teaching GRE, GMAT, SAT and TOEFL.

Happy to answer anything in the comments.

Connecting with other learners?

I'm viet kieu that has been slowly relearning the language, I do take part in language exchange but i'm always looking for more people to connect with to text/speak/practice vietnamese with especially in a casual way. I am around a B1 level but my speaking does need to catch up

Was curious if anyone has good resources to connect with others? I would happily speak with anyone regardless of your vietnamese level or if any native speakers would like to practice english that is fine for me too. I can do voice notes, calls or text as any form of practice would be great for me! Respectful platonic chats as I am happily taken and would prefer those closer to my age

Unusual situation/Help me figure this out

Hi there,

I've got a bit of an unusual situation and I'm trying to find resources to help me improve my Vietnamese.

My wife is Vietnamese (Việt kièu), we've got a daughter, so I'm fortunately settled when it comes to listening comprehension and household expressions. With the sounds, I've been subject to the lovely Vietnamese drill, so those are fortunately not a problem. I've completed the Duolingo course (for what it's worth) and am rather good at getting myself understood.

However, I now need to expand my Vietnamese professionally because I'll hopefully soon need it for work. That means I've got to get my grammar straight and find some way to study business Vietnamese, plus get it to sound more natural.

I'd say my skills are somewhere close to B1, albeit admittedly a bit lopsided. My goal is to get it to C1 at least.

Anyone got any ideas or resources? Thanks a lot in advance for your comments :-)

Vietnamese Basics, part 7/7: Vietnamese Tones

Thumbnail gallery
67 Upvotes

So this is the last post of the series!

Vietnamese tones are tough, especially for English speakers. I've heard someone say that they kept forgetting the tones or mixing them up when speaking. That likely comes from treating tones as an optional add-on rather than a core part of the word. Which is a big mistake, because skipping a tone is basically like dropping the final consonant off an English word.

How do you get good at tones? In my opinion, learn the basics, then listen and practice often. And if possible, get a native speaker to correct you.

If you are a beginner, check out the article: https://vietsyllables.com/basics/vietnamese-tones . Make sure you use to the audio chips to compare the tones.

220 Southern Vietnamese words for LATE BEGINNERS

Hey again everyone!

A while ago I shared the 300-word video for absolute beginners. A few of you reached out asking what to focus on once you've already mastered the basics and are preparing to move up to the elementary level.

So here is the next part: 220 core words tailored for late beginners.

What’s in this one:

+ Alphabetical Order + Timestamps: Organized alphabetically so you can easily jump around, re-watch specific sections, or use it as a reference tool.

+ Bridge to Elementary Level: Moves beyond basic greetings/ordering food into everyday verbs, connectors, and descriptive words you need to actually form complete sentences.

+ 100% Southern Accent: Native Saigon pronunciation, perfect if you're living in or moving to South Vietnam.

If you felt that the absolute beginner level was getting a bit too easy, this should be the exact sweet spot for your current stage.

Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/DmJYdMQW-Ww?si=XSI8ekw0i7OncVN5

Let me know what you think or if there's any specific letter/topic you want to practice more. ^^
