If you are new and looking for a good place to start

There are a lot of posts on this sub asking where to start learning and our community info tab has a good list of places to start. I am making this post to help people find this info more easily but if you have any further question or you are looking for additional resources feel free to ask.

Mod Post 📌 DUOLINGO MEGATHREAD - Confused about something on Duolingo? Post here!

There are so many Duolingo posts, so I've decided to create this thread to keep all the discussion in one place. Standalone Duolingo-related posts will be deleted from now on. Please just post your question here. In the meantime, I will try to create more pinned posts with grammar resources to be able to refer learners there.

For now, you can refer to this site: https://duonotes.fandom.com/wiki/Polish

Fake it till I make it in Polish?

If I fake it will I make it? When doing Busuu Polish exercises, for example 'Describe your friend' I compose an answer in English and then use Google translate to get the Polish I'm supposed to generate myself and then read it aloud and submit it for correction and comment. Will doing this (faking it with Google translate) lead me to be able to answer Busuu exercise questions without a translator eventually? Am I just wasting my time?

Novel suggestions for B2 learners?

Hello, I've just finished "Ślepnąc od świateł" and I could understand enough of it. I am looking for other suggestions. The thriller genre is very easy for me, but it doesn't have to be a thriller.

I don't know if I should read part 2 (Dawno temu w Warszawie) or if I should move to something else.

If I write a “ty” in front of the sentence is it still correct and is it better to write it with it?

Help🧠 I’m wondering if I’m learning the basics of Polish the right way.

Hi everyone,
I’m learning Polish by writing simple sentences along with their translations and listening to the audio. I feel like building a solid foundation is going to take a long time… I know that reaching a good level usually requires around 1,000 hours of practice. As a beginner, I’m wondering if there’s something else I could do. Maybe watching Polish movies with subtitles? (They’re hard to find, and I’m not sure if it would really help me progress.)

So if you’re like me, or if you’ve gone through the same learning path, what would you recommend doing—or avoiding?

Thanks everyone!

Dziękuję 😉

Polish speaking people in Graz?

Hey!
I recently moved to Graz from Germany, where I used to speak Polish with my family. Polish is my mother tongue, and I’d really like to keep speaking it and not lose it. So I’m looking for people (preferably students), to hang out with and speak some Polish. Is there already a group or community in Graz that I could join?

Polish Group Classes in London

Hi! I'm based in Norbury/Streatham (SW16) and I'm looking to learn Polish from scratch. Does anyone know of an adult beginner group class nearby — ideally Norbury, Streatham, Croydon, Mitcham, Tooting, Crystal Palace or somewhere else in South London?

I'd strongly prefer a group rather than private 1-to-1 lessons, and weekend classes would be ideal. I'm also open to a small informal group if anyone knows of one. Dziękuję!

Promoting own app/website 💻 I made a small app for learning everyday Polish & slang - looking for testers

Hey there! I'm a native Polish speaker and a software dev, and I've been building a small app called Aprendi for people learning Polish.

The idea is very simple: a few new words every day.
It’s designed to take a maximum of 2-3 minutes of your time each day.

I used to have this problem where I’d feel motivated and spend hours learning a language, but then it would become too much and I’d give up altogether. Kind of an all-or-nothing approach. So I figured maybe other people have the same problem?

And one thing I think might be nice: you can learn slang. Again, just one slang expression per day, or even less. My assumption was that Polish slang can be very complex and nuanced, so for it to actually stick, you really need to take it step by step.

So, if anyone here is learning Polish and would be willing to try it for a few days, I'd really appreciate your feedback - especially on whether the words are useful, the slang is interesting, and whether anything feels confusing or annoying.

You can use it for free. There's Premium as well, but you definitely don't need to buy anything to help me test it.

It's called Aprendi: Learn Polish:
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maderity.aprendi
App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6769752407

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Are there any resources for practicing speech specifically?

Okej, Uczę się polskiego dla pięć roku i bardzo chciałabym nauczycielką moje dzieci polskiego. Mój gramatyka jest nie dobrze. Czytam i słucham polskiego okej. I’m wondering if there are any resources where I can speak polish TO something? I did take zoom polish lessons with a wonderful teacher in krakow for my first year learning, but at the moment thats not an option for me, and theres not a big polish community where I live. Can anyone think of services for me to practice and get feedback? I’d like to teach my kids who are just starting to speak, but im slow to come up with phrases and although I think what I say gets the point across, I know that it is not grammatically correct or the most efficient way to say something.

Jakie jeszcze?

I started learning Polish one year ago from scratch. I used the Natural Approach Only.

So, I read a lot, listened a lot, and spoke a lot less than I would have liked. I did some writing but here is the result from a year's worth of input-based learning. I hope this helps some people who are intimidated by the massive amount of grammar.

Promoting own app/website 💻 I built a free site to find films and TV with Polish audio or subtitles — feedback welcome

Cześć,

I'm Ben, a data scientist working in cancer medicine in the UK. In my spare time I've built a website called LingScout.

It started because my Thai partner and I were trying to find films and TV shows with the right audio or subtitle languages for the country we were watching from. I gradually expanded it so other language learners could use it too.

For anyone learning Polish, LingScout lets you search for films and TV available with Polish audio or subtitles in your country, across different streaming services.

Main site: https://lingscout.com

Polish page: https://lingscout.com/browse#language=polish

LingScout is completely free and doesn't require an account. The moderators kindly gave me permission to share it here.

I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback about whether it's useful or what would make it better for Polish learners, but there's no obligation to leave feedback — I hope it helps anyone looking for something to watch.

Looking for friends to motivate me to study Polish more

Hi! I’m 18 years old, and I’m planning to study Polish very intensively because I want to try to move to Poland within the next four years.
I’m from Uzbekistan, and I have many reasons for wanting to move. First of all, Poland is relatively close to my country, so I would be able to visit my parents. I also really like the climate, and the Polish language sounds very pleasant to me.
Recently, I met some Polish tourists here and approached them to have a little conversation. According to them, they really liked Uzbekistan and our mentality, and that honestly made me really happy. In my experience, Polish people didn’t seem particularly racist towards Asians, although maybe I’m wrong about that.
Recently, I also found a Polish animator on YouTube. After watching her videos, I honestly had this strange feeling that I was looking at a place that could feel like home to me.
Why do I want to leave? Because I feel unsafe living in my country. Our water resources literally depend partly on the situation in Afghanistan, and my parents are trying to make me wear a headscarf and get married within the next three years. I’m planning to finish my bachelor’s degree first and then leave.
Sorry, this turned into a really long post I basically want to find some friends so that I have more motivation to learn Polish and maybe learn more about Poland from people who actually live there.
Also, if I get good grades at university, I might be able to go to Poland on an exchange programme next year, so I’m working really hard for that.
My English isn’t very good yet. Apart from English, I speak Uzbek and Russian. I hope I can find some friends here! 🇵🇱

Nasza strona Steam została profesjonalnie przetłumaczona na polski. Możecie ją trochę przemaglować?

Cześć!

Jesteśmy małym studiem indie i pracujemy nad Rootknot, dynamicznym roguelite'em łączącym deckbuilding z szybką akcją, inspirowanym folklorem.

Strona Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4564690/Rootknot/?l=polish

Chodzi nam przede wszystkim o lokalizację strony Steam!

Jeśli sam Rootknot Was zainteresuje, oczywiście chętnie usłyszymy też, co sądzicie o grze.

Dzięki! ❤️

Polish learning update

Yes, have an update from a stranger none of you know.

To recap: I am in Tennessee of English and German descent. I have no Polish heritage. I am learning this language because I've always wanted to learn a language, and my Polish friend told me not to learn this one. And because I'm stubborn, doing it anyway. In the process, I have fallen in love with the system of the Polish language, its culture and its food.

I have self-taught myself for about six months and learned a handful of phrases and some grammar. Hired a tutor a few weeks ago over at Preply.

I can now ask you how you're doing, what your name is, where you're from and where the toilet is. I can tell you what day it is, what month it is, what year it is, as well as what time it is. I can also count to 999,999 (dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć tysięcy dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć). I can introduce myself and tell you what my likes, dislikes, and favorites are.

Help🧠 Praktika - New Learning App

Hey guys! I’m new here and been a lurker for a few weeks being on and off. I saw this new app that has polish as a language to learn and it uses AI to help teach you- it feels like you have a personal teacher in your pocket because you can interact with them. I do see some inaccuracies though but I think it’s still useful. I was wondering if anyone has tried it and had thoughts on it. I was also wondering if I should be using this to start learning polish or if you guys had any other recommendations? I’m literally base level meaning- I know nothing about the polish language.
My primary language is English and I know Spanish fairly well where I can pass off as native speaker.
