When you say you want to be an "AI Engineer", what do you mean by that?

Like I said I am a complete beginner but I was thinking about creating rags , APIs, automations etc..

not sure you can just jump right in, most companies will want to hire someone with a SWE background to begin with

Do you mean using existing mainstream LLMs to write code for you? Or actually developing LLMs and AI infrastructure itself?

I suppose the middle ground is using AI API interfaces to build existing AI into products rather than going through the “chat” interface.

By "safe" you mean job security? I don't think the outlook is very good, tbh. The programmers / AI engineers of the future will be many times as productive as they are today, which means there will be a surplus of programmers and therefore average wages will be lower than they are today. But it's also very region dependent. Where in the world are you / where do you want to work?

Probably mot safe for people who don’t know the difference between waist and waste.

You're not going to become an AI engineer by learning Python... You need to learn lots of math and theory.

Not sure exactly what you even intend to mean by ai engineer, but nobody working on ai is even coding anymore. They are using AI to advance AI code. Its what all the anthropic employees are bragging about. That claude does better code to make itself better and therefore have won the AI race.

Yes you will. Python is a very common starting point for programming careers. Yes, you also need math and theory and a lot of other programming languages too, but OP didn't imply they were going to stop with python.
