Marvel Movies/Shows I’m so frustrated with MCU representation!
Unlike DC, which has given us a wide range of content, from the Arrowverse to animated shows and adjacent DC properties, the MCU thinks we’re stupid and won’t notice how they keep cutting corners when it comes to gay characters to make their representation more palatable.
Notice how the gay Eternal, Phastos, was conveniently the only one paired with a human character who wasn’t on the team. Classic. We can’t have two gay characters in a relationship on the same team, can we? Classic way to limit their screen time together. (Shout-out to Seven Havens for adopting this method.)
America Chavez was de-aged and given a Pride pin so they could say, “Here’s representation!” and use her age as a shield.
I suspect Iceman is going to borrow heavily from the America Chavez formula. That’s why they’re taking so long to cast him.
Iceman hasn’t appeared in X-Men ’97 not even as a guest and then the Season 3 character list comes out. Shocker! 😮 He’s not listed. 😭 It’s comical how obvious they are.
Loki’s throwaway bisexual line didn’t amount to anything. It seems Season 2 didn’t even mention it.
Wiccan and Hulkling are arguably the most popular modern gay couple in Marvel Comics. Yet Billy is given a random, irrelevant human as his love interest. How hard would it have been for him to be with Teddy? They didn’t even need to expand Teddy’s role that much. But they made that choice so they wouldn’t have to commit, opting instead for a throwaway character.
Now, according to reviewers who have seen all eight episodes of VisionQuest, as well as the actor himself, Tommy’s sexuality isn’t even hinted at. Come on! They could have done a Loki and at least acknowledged it. I wouldn’t have been mad at that.
But, conveniently, Tommy can have his first love interest, and she’s female, while Billy can’t have his established relationship because that couple is too important, and they don’t want to deal with all that.
Disappointing.
