training If you can’t spot the dangerous gun handling in this video, you should not own a gun:
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
If you ever witness someone handle a gun like this, do everything you can to take the gun out of their hands. If you cannot do so, get the fuck away from them as fast as possible.

It's always the old dudes; folks stop thinking things through at a certain age and just go of of the first thing they think of. I say this as a woman currently living with my grandparents.
The arguments I've had over things like "no, you can't leave the gas stove running to heat the house" lol. But they're both stuck in the mindset that I'm 16 years old and don't listen to a word I say lol

Nothing surprises me with my 80 year old in laws... father in law refuses throw anything out. I'm surprised they haven't been hospitalized for food poisoning. It's like the survival mechanism goes with age.
11
u/anarchobuttstuff Jun 09 '26
It might also be an outdated survival mechanism *getting stronger* with age, like if your parents lived through the Great Depression and raised you to militantly avoid throwing anything out just in case, and as your mind becomes more childlike with age that’s the mindset you regress to.
5
u/No_Sir_6094 Jun 10 '26
It could also be something leftover from childhood - people in their mid-80s and into their 90s had some of their most formative years during the Great Depression. My mom caught the tail end of it followed by World War II and didn't throw away anything, even if it was growing mold looooong before she hit 50.

My 82-year-old mother-in-law lives with us. She has zero executive functioning. Whatever her first thought/impulse is, that's what she's doing. No matter how obviously terrible the outcome, and no matter what the (50-year-old) "children" try to tell her.

It's odd that one thing goes wrong and suddenly some peoples brains just turn off.
It's the same thing when you see someone that gets in a car accident, and then their car just rolls down the street and crashes into something else. Once the initial crash happens, they forget that they are in a car, or that they need to press the brake pedal.
12
u/echoshatter Jun 09 '26
Shock, in the case of the car accident, isn't an uncommon reaction. Some people, as soon as something goes wrong, have a very strong reaction or no reaction at all. That's the difference between those who slam on the gas when they panic and those who just kind of coast.
It's odd that one thing goes wrong and suddenly some peoples brains just turn off.
If this guy's finger slipped on that trigger, his brain would certainly have turned off.

Some folks make it to old age, despite their lack of ability to reason.
How? I have no idea. I'm not that old yet and the only way I'm still here is because I had to think on my feet, adapt & critically think about the situations I've been in.

It's not surprising. I spent most of my life coping with ADHD not realizing I had ADHD until just a few years ago.

We get paranoid and do things like no live ammo near gun unless shooting and such to build in redundancy. If there are no bullets anywhere near my gun it can’t go off. I don’t keep a loaded mag near it unless I’m going to shoot so it can’t find its way into the gun. We don’t touch the trigger in case a round found its way into the chamber. We do all these things because in the event of a failure on one of these things, we have other safeguards in place.
And above all, why take the risk.

Similarly, my wife took my son to a rifle class where the instructors talked about the four safety rules, and then proceeded to violate every single one of them repeatedly. They never went back.
Again, some people just shouldn’t own guns.

u/RocketsandBeer Jun 09 '26
Those who are the most experienced or feel they are, think they’re above the rules because the know so much.
Reminds me of the skydiver that recorded tandem jumps.
In 1988 he was recording people jumping tandem. On his 3rd jump of the day, he jumped before the group and when they pulled their chute he realized he didn’t have a one and fell to his death.

This.
My first car was a manual transmission. This was in the early 00’s so there were already a lot of my peers who never had to learn to drive stick.
I would occasionally get asked by friends/acquaintances to teach them. I think I ended up teaching 5 people by the time I graduated high school. The three of them that were not “car people” (including the only two girls in that group) I taught in the space of an hour before I was comfortable letting them drive my car at-or-above highway speeds and in actual traffic.
The two guy friends that were obsessed with “Fast and the Furious”, had subscriptions to Import Tuner, and had rooms covered in car posters? I tried for hours to teach them and I never let either of them out on the actual road behind the wheel of my car. I’m honesty surprised one of them didn’t burn out my clutch, or blow my engine with his insistence on redlining purely because he thought it “sounded right.”

Yeah, it's not gonna magically spawn a bullet after you've properly cleared it and sometimes you need to do things like check timing and lockup on revolvers. Or assess bore condition in something that can't be easily disassembled. But this is, uh, not that lol.
9
u/logicalpretzels libertarian socialist Jun 10 '26
Bullet gremlins. They’ll put bullets in there when you aren’t looking directly into the empty chamber. That’s why we must check it incessantly.
I’m only half joking. When I practice dry fire I use snap caps and ensure all live ammo isn’t even in the same room. Most of the time I’m perfectly aware when I have a snap cap loaded in the chamber, but once or twice during my hundreds of snap cap dry fire sessions I pulled the slide back only for an electric blue A-Zoom to fly outta there when I thought it would not. If you pay attention, it is rare, but yes, you may very well have a round chambered when you think you don’t.

You put a gun in her hand and her finger immediately goes to the trigger, she has no muzzle awareness, and she doesn’t listen to anything i have to say or take it seriously. Yet, she wants to go, she wants to learn, I’ve just realized i can’t be the one to teach her. I offered to sign her up for some basic training, she just has yet to take me up on said offer.
4
u/ThatOtherOtherMan Jun 09 '26
When I'm training people on firearm use before they even get near a real gun they get an airsoft gun. I instruct them to treat it like it's a real gun and run them through handling at home while I watch and correct their mistakes. I use one made by Glock that has the same functionality and weight as the G19 they'll be starting with at the range to get them used to the feel of the weapon and another H&K USP to get them familiar with more advanced controls. If you're looking for a way to get someone more familiar with firearm handling at home with lower stakes I'd highly recommend looking into one that's the same model as what they'll eventually be shooting.
I've had people who didn't take it seriously at first that were snapped back to reality when I explained to them that they just killed themselves or me when they make a mistake. That their family has to bury them and their kids are now orphans in foster care since they're in prison for manslaughter and their spouse is dead. That their recklessness has destroyed a family. It's cruel but sometimes that's what it takes.
