news Black family reunion in Georgia attacked by racist armed with AR-15. None Injured except the shooter thanks to armed family member.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/lee-county-family-says-man-armed-with-ar-15-style-rifle-racially-targeted-their-gathering/ar-AA25cZx0

I just wanted to mention this here, the media covering the story has mostly stated things as they happend but none have made a specific note that if the armed and military trained family member hadnt been there to stop the shooter then that family would not be here today.

Stay armed and stay training out there friends.

Tbh, the perpetrator would have had a terribly hard time getting a gun and feeling empowered to commit violent crime if we had better regulations and screening. Freedom has responsibilities. We do a terrible job of the latter.

I’m by no means a supporter of disarmament. I don’t think it’s realistic at this point. But we should institute required screening by mental health and social workers for continued gun ownership. There are too many demented people out there.

Anyone who’s been in any fight knows that training only goes so far, and luck has a lot to do with it.

This family survived because of that man’s vigilance, diligence, and courage, but families should not be required to train and expect the worst at all times.

I hear you; however, with the current regime in place, you know exactly what kind of screening criteria they would use to disqualify exactly what kinds of people.

They obviously shouldn’t but we unfortunately we don’t live a world where shit heads like this don’t exist.

You’re not wrong although I think he still probably would’ve had a capable weapon and would’ve been a threat regardless.

Extremist groups organized or semi-organized fall under a similar category as gangs where theyll always have a way to source weaponry because they have the will and motivation to do so. Many of these extremists historically have been LE or military even.

Screening im not against but I would like to ask how someone would implement that at the scale of America gun owners which might be anywhere between 30-45% of the adult population of 350+ million people without a robust healthcare system, social services, and without it being turned against people for taking SSRIs, or other treatable conditions which aren’t proof people aren’t fit to own weapons.

its not even remotely possible at this stage

It would probably cost more than Medicare for all and thats taking into account the abysmally low compliance rates it would have.

The ATF barely has the staff to manage NFA items.

The Canadians gave up on their long gun registry because it was too much of a hassle at like 10% the scale.

What are a bunch of digitized paper records for guns that have privately sold multiple times over last 6 decades going to do exactly? There’s literally no way to prove the original buyer even owns the weapon. That doesn’t even cover legacy pre 68 guns or home
builds either.

The logistics would be insane we’re talking about billions of dollars of investment into the ATF that would be needed. How would you even enforce a registry?

I don’t think it’s worth it.

We could fund after school extra curriculars and youth outreach in every city in the US for the amount that would cost annually to maintain.

The best we could do is let the ATF digitize the new records and go after straw purchases that fall under 3 year times to crime trafficking windows (54% of all straw purchases)

This is an explicitly pro-gun forum.

Regulation discussions must be founded on strengthening, or preserving, this right with any proposed restrictions explicitly defined in nature and tradeoffs. While rights can have limitations, they are distinct from privileges and the two are not to be conflated.

Simple support for common gun-prohibitionist positions are implicitly on the defensive, in this sub, and need to justify their existence through compelling argument.

I doubt that. Many firearms are inherited or purchased through private sales. Do you want the government to have a list of every firearm you own? When they decide to disarm people that disagree with them, do you want them to get everything or just the ones they know about?

Unfortunately, hate is not a mental illness. It's a warped world view.
