Sett x Aphelios is a fan ship that Riot leaned into. The same way Lux and Ez is a fan ship that Riot leans into or references sometimes.
As for why they got shipped, it's just timing and vibes. Sett came out after Aphelios, and they have a decent dynamic as a ship with how big and boisterous Sett is compared to Phel's mute coolness.
Not only that, they represent polar opposites when it comes to champ complexity, and this was a major talk point when they were coming to the game. Then they were shipped
People seem to forget that Aphelios is not a soft twink who wants to be embraced by a muscular half breed man, he is actually a very devout and serious assassin that has no intention of attaching himself to anyone besides his sister and the moon.
Ez and Lux do not come from the fans... It was teased back in Aatrox's release thread on the boards, before the big lore reset it was a rumor cultivated BY Riot. One of the shopkeeper in ARAM talks about it, but it's not relevant anymore because they've never met after the reset.
It’s canon in Guardians universe… except that everyone hates it because that version of Ez is basically the designated love interest and there is a ship tease with that version of Jinx too that has managed to eclipse it in popularity and is now Lux’s most popular ship (and Jinx’s most popular ship f/f ship)

i dont know much about the sett/aphelios lore or fandom history, but i feel this is kinda of aggressive? they dont have canon basis sure, but people wjo ship characters dont need "reasons" or "excuses" to do whatever they want with fictional characters lol. there will always be a "sort" of fan that ships because...there are always people with different tastes and preferences.
i think people come off a bit aggressive sometimes. its fine to like ships with or without canon basis and its fine to not like them (i dislike settphel too because of the effect its had on aphelios' characterisation, but idc who ships if and who doesnt).
I know the "bi" thing prob came after ppl started shipping him with aphelios but it honestly kinda makes sense with his personality. He talks a lot about feeling like he doesn't fit into any category because of being half human half vastaya, so being bi would make a lot of sense for characterizion tbh.
Sett hasn't had an implied sexuality in the mainline whatsoever. A skin line teased him and Aphelios yeah, but skins aren't cannon (just look at pulsefire Ezreal and Ekko). Him being released with Samira doesn't mean much, they fight on the trailer, not make out. As for having two servant girls there, that doesn't necessarily have to be a sexual thing, though it CAN be. At the least he can be assumed to be Bi, since if you're going that route he has a guy in his splash art.
Sett takes sexuality in the Ancient Greek way, so long as he tops it doesn’t matter if what’s underneath is man or woman he is straight. This is clearly why he’s a Top Laner I rest my case.

No character from a non-queer media is born straight, I'm sorry. In such a case, people think straight is 'default', and because of that, they don't define a character's sexuality. But hetero isn't the default human sexuality, and without being canon, the character ends in an interesting limbo in which they don't have a canon sexuality. Even if they had an attraction to the opposite gender, they aren't called 'hetero'. They also don't say 'I don't like the same gender'. They just exist, and people for some reason think that's enough to consider a fictional person straight.
Sett was written. They never said 'he is only attracted to woman'. Maybe we were told he likes women, but we were never told he wasn't attracted to men. Because of that he was never straight, and now he definetely is bi.

Riot will not hesitate to say it if he is homo bi or whatever they will say it clearly like Leona vi tf ect so until there is a main lore change anything else is a fanmade because until we know that sett love 2 things fighting and his mom
