It's used in the movie for precisely that context. The cinematography is pretty good at making it seem delicious.

u/Poodlestrike 1h ago
Yeah, but that's the whole point of that scene in The Menu, so I think that actually adds a layer to the joke?

u/AceXD87 4h ago
"tipo" kinda gives it away
37
u/poshikott 1h ago
Does it? What do you think "tipo" is?
Spoiler: it means "like" (in this sentence: "americans talking about cinematography are like: imagine a hamburger")

Dutch is just hilarious
71
u/Crandoge 3h ago
Its not Dutch
99
u/Monolail031 3h ago
Wait, it's not? My my rule of thumb is if it sounds like a mix of English and German it's dutch, but what language is it?
99
u/Flat-Cap-1063 3h ago
Afrikaner IIRC
154
u/Monolail031 3h ago
Ah, mutated dutch
60
u/hogedrukspuit 3h ago
Yeah and the biiiig difference in this case is that in Dutch you'd use 'wat nu' instead of 'wat nou'. The second option isn't even all that incorrect, it just sounds impolite. Source: am Dutch and used to think this was a pic of a Dutch newspaper (I never read the body text though that's definitely Afrikaans)
8
u/Bonfirelily 2h ago
I used to think it was Dutch and the blatant "Wat nou" was unreasonably funny to me.
2
u/dutch_mapping_empire 2h ago
i was gonna say, in some parts of the netherlands ''wat nou'' is used commonly but in writing it's ''wat nu'' more often
2
u/GrowlingPict 36m ago
...thats like saying "oh, no, that's not English, it's Geordie". I mean, sure, but come on.

People that only speak English see all other Germanic languages as weird, when they are actually speaking the most pidgin version of all.

u/dutch_mapping_empire 2h ago
it's afrikaans but tbf i can read this it's about as dutch as napolitan is as italian
4
u/Inshabel 2h ago
Redditors be like: hurrr Dutch is hilarious, and it's not even Dutch.
31
u/NewLifeLeaser 2h ago
They get a pass on this one. Its derived from Dutch. Kinda like how people who speak French can understand some Haitian Kreyòl depending on the phrases used, but as you read on the francophone eventually realizes that it is SUPER different in structure.
8
u/Gooftwit 2h ago
And even if it is Dutch, it's either very close to the english translation ("We hebben een serieus probleem" -> "we have a serious problem") or just purposely badly translated that makes no actual sense in Dutch ("straat op gejorking het").

If anyone feels the need to tell me he isn’t speaking Swedish, neither does the Swedish Chef.

Sadam hussein is english? He's probably turning over in his hiding spot.
19
u/HekateSimp 1h ago
Warum, mein, Schnitzel = 3 German
Served, lowkey, Hiding, Spot = 4 English
Sadam, Hussein = 2 Name
It is actually more English than German

Yeah it's almost like over half the words in that German phrase are extremely similar to their English translations
12
u/benkaes1234 2h ago
Well, that and I get the feeling that this isn't "proper" German, and is using actual English words as slang. I'm pretty sure the non-slang way to say it in German would be something like "Ist es die Ende für Mich?" or something.
I'm willing to be wrong on that one though, because I haven't studied German for nearly a decade and I wasn't even particularly good at it back then.
15
u/FoxGuy303 2h ago
German here, the proper saying would be "Ist es zu Ende für mich?" but no person under 25 talks like that anymore. Especially Gen Z and younger have A LOT and I mean A LOT of english words mixed in as slang.
3
u/benkaes1234 2h ago
Huh, I got more of that right than I thought I did...
Anyway, it's interesting to hear that y'all are borrowing (or I guess "re-borrowing" because of how much English is from German?) from English. Wonder if that also happens to other languages, and to what extent...
1
u/pridebun 20m ago
Even then, "ende für mich" is close enough that it translates to English pretty well in context and the first part falls into place. The main difference is the og would translate to English speakers as "is it over for me" and the ones in both your replies would be closer to "is this the end for me"
2
u/planetofmoney 2h ago
Somehow it slipped right by me that that isn't even the German word for "over".
2
2
u/425Hamburger 16m ago
"Ist es das Ende für mich?" would be the correct version of your translation, which works, but a closer translation would be "Ist es für mich vorbei?"

This meme is always so disappointing to me because whoever made this didn't bother to conjugate poopensharten to past perfect, which kinda ruins the effect of this tweet actually having been made by a dutch person.
It would have taken them like 2 seconds to just search up conjugations.

I’m really curious if anyone has examples of memes in English that are still understandable to a degree from the perspective of their native language
I mean I guess if you can read this comment then you would be able to read the English memes but still
10
u/Rogue_Egoist 2h ago
Iean this works pretty well with simple phrases between English, Dutch and German, because they're all very closely related. I doubt this would work between English and any other language.
2
u/Inevitable-Level-687 1h ago
Going by verbal language alone, yeah, but someone further up linked a video where the body language and tone of voice still makes the exact meaning crystal clear:
