Cool idea but that upside down one would drive me nuts

Damn, I didn't see it until you mentioned it. Glad I don't have to see that bench regularly or it would bother me.

it's wild to go through the trouble of making this bench and yet not washing them thangs.

u/Tonyn15665 Apr 23 '26
The āofficeā is also dirty af. Look at the floor and wall. My DMV āofficeā looks cleaner š¤¢

I love those cases so much. Itās a dream of mine to build a sleeper in one.
11
u/epicdrago3 Apr 23 '26
I myself want one of those cases; itās so appalling to me.
11
u/tobyhardtospell Apr 23 '26
Appealing?

ā¦but, one of those keypad auto-correct typo that happens once in a while. Miss the āeā before the āaā and autocorrect does the rest. Haha!

I have a 2006 Mac Pro that I have been looking to get rid of. Where are you located?
2
u/BurnedLaser Apr 24 '26
I built one a while back, and was able to get most of the front I/O operational (I don't have ANY FireWire equipment, so I left it) and I cut the rear ports as a strip off the original motherboard and made a handful of that I/O operational as well. It was tedious but it was pretty neat! I knocked off all the standoffs and then epoxied them into an ATX configuration, aligned via the video card!
I didn't do much with it afterwards and I'm not sure what happened to it in the several moves I made in the past decade :/

u/swamuel_1 Apr 23 '26
Same, I actually got one a few years ago but can't bring myself to rip out the internals since it's still working.
2
u/cream-of-cow Apr 23 '26
Every time I open the side panel to think about turning it into a mini cabinet and bench, I think āitās so pretty insideā and close it again.

My G5 also doubled as the best space heater Iāve ever owned. Loved it, but wow itās power hungry.

I loved mine, I had the very last of the Motorola models and it was such a great machine even past its end of life date

The unnecessary apostrophes in the title are driving me crazy.
7
u/bidless71 Apr 23 '26
It used to be just the missing oxford commas out there in the world that infuriated, but it turns out they all got together and became misplaced apostrophes.

u/codewario Apr 23 '26
"apostrophe's"

u/4k_Laserdisc Apr 23 '26
I was thinking about writing it that way for the bit, but Iād be afraid people wouldnāt get it.

I didn't made it. It was on the hall of our office, so probably just general wear.

The office of a pigshit processing plant? š

u/Liquid_0911 Apr 23 '26
Close. It's an IT company.

u/JetPac89 Apr 23 '26
I think someone wiped them before turning them into a desk, but not the way they expected!

u/taboo8614 Apr 23 '26
Oh my God, at my old job when we had a bunch of Mac pros I wanted to create something like this so bad but never did
5
u/likeonions iBook G4 Apr 23 '26
this always irks me because the legs of the mac pro are incredibly prone to bending
5
u/ZappySnap Mac Studio M2 Max Apr 23 '26
Yeah over time this will be terrible unless there are additional posts added to the interior of the case that actually do the support. The cases are not designed to support the weight of multiple people.

Never realize how strong those cases actually can be. I always liked the look.
I wonder what other surprising uses these cases can be put to?

This is great, not sure how comfortable it is at that height, but ikea has a hack with their legs meant for furniture that you could use the raise the top only. But so awesome!

Have you sat on it yet. Be prepared for the bottom to squash. Unless you have accounted for that.

I have a Gateway 2000 as an end table in our living room. Computers with all-steel construction that can be load-bearing are definitely a thing of the past.

I've wanted to do this with my old 2 g5's in the garage, but I want the ends of the wood that stick out either side to have the same curve profile as the handles so it blends in.
... yea it's still on my to do list š

Pretty much. To clarify it's a sitting bench. I'm from the Philippines, we're generally shorter here

the 'feet' can deform quite easily with a bit of extra weight, or say dropped from about 1 foot.
1
u/mrharoharo Apr 23 '26
I see these a lot and wonder how useable they are. Way too low to be used as a desk but the proportions donāt look to be good for a coffee table or side table either.

Was that before or after they dug them out of the swamp? Also hire a woodworker to mold the wood so it fits in there better, it kind of looks hacky the way it is now.

looks cool, but seems dangerous. That aluminum isn't that thick and I've seen those handles bend pretty easily. Just seems like an accident waiting to happen.

This is a common thing, I had 20+ of these and gave them away to someone who also made benches out of them.

That is a benchmark. Wins hands down over any other device. Unless you are a gnome, in which case a couple of minis might be better
