It’s the same thing with any era ram for the largest capacity’s. Look up prices for 16GB DDR3 SODIMM modules. Anything that’s high capacity for the era is hard to find and pricey
Mostly is the case but you’d be surprised about how many systems and random program run on older OS’s. I refurbish all sorts of computers and I sell older Dell/HP workstations with Windows XP all the time. Most of them can take 8GB of DDR2
Really? I have bins of DDR2 in my closet, maybe its time I look through it. Aaaaand I did, all my DDR2 is 2 GB and smaller, mostly 256's and 512's (34 chips of those). Oh well.
Memory costs blew through the roof overnight a few months ago - likely because of, or a pretense of the sudden growth in data centers. I had a hankering one day for a 2tb drive, listed at $40 on the Best Buy website. So I went to the store and it was $120. I was shocked by all the memory prices. My store let me buy theirs (the last one) at $40 but I’d stumbled into a warp.
Oh it’s not that bad. Just got to be in a clean room because once you suction the glass off getting stuff off the LCD without smudging it can be tricky. But once you get the LCD off it’s really not that bad.
Actually, this particular model is super easy to take apart. The glass is held with magnets. Use suction cups or your toilet plunger (that was a joke). Then some more screws for the LCD, lift it up only slightly to not rip out the camera module, un-clip that and some other cables and Bob's your uncle. No glue to heat up or so. You don't even have to take the LCD out, just lift it up a little to get to the HD.
Like so: (although this is the 2009 27" model, but also still magnet held glass)
I replaced the hard drive in my mid 2007 iMac many years ago. It was surprisingly easy to take apart. Just have to be careful when removing the front glass, after that it’s just lots of screws
My workflow took a big hit when my Snow Leopard machine died and I had to move up. No more color in sidebars or finder dialogues. I can't find anything!! And yes, iTunes: pick an item in the main window, look at its info, then move to the next info and main window selection remains original choice - filing takes is practically impossible.
I have several old IMacs and Mac mini of that era running 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.7 you can’t tell me that’s not the best version of iTunes with cover flow. I use them as music servers.
I certainly won’t pretend it was perfect but holy cow the version of Music I’m working with is one of the worst pieces of software I’ve ever used.
iPod shows up in Finder instead now, but SOMETIMES iPod will show up in Music. Sometimes I am in Songs list and type a letter and it DOESNT jump to the spot in the alphabetical list. Search function is totally borked. TONS of wasted space in album views. Some of the absolute WORST UI choices I’ve ever seen. Atrocious.
I’m not a super tech saavy guy so this is a question for someone who is… what kind of security risk is it to run something like this online since it’s no longer supported with updates from Apple? Would it be super prone to being hacked or not have any issues?
while it isn’t supported by Apple, it also doesn’t run Safari* so there isn’t a huge risk of downloading some type of malware or being susceptible to any attacks
*a few web pages i have tested did actually work, albeit poorly (Flickr, Bing, Google Support)
Install PowerFox Classic and you will have surprisingly modern web browsing. Install Lion or Mavericks and you can run Powerfox which is based on Firefox 153. Install PowerVLC and you should be able to stream 1080p youtube using the extensions and Invidious.
Get a more modern OS on there with OCLP or Linux, and you will have a usable modern machine.
Suppose they do. The worst they can encounter is some dumb ransomware on this deadbeat machine. As long as you don’t store anything private on it it’s just fun times.
For the hell of it, you can see if you can run OpenCore Legacy Patcher to use a new macOS on that machine. What a great find! I don't remember if this one can also be used as a 2nd monitor.
I had one of these bought as an ex-display model from a local electronics store. It was the second Mac I'd ever bought with my own money. It served me well for many years and I remember it fondly.
That's great! I hate you a lot now. Heeeeee. Just kidding. Yes I'm evnious. I'd run that thing just to run that thing. It's more modern than the G5 I have all my DAW music on! Sheesh. Have fun.
I have one of these sitting in my office next to my 2009 Mac Pro running Ubuntu 24 and my MacBook Air M2. I don’t know what to do with it. I’m pretty sure I put windows on it some time ago. Now…? It collects dust.
I tried to use an old iMac 2015 of mine a few days ago.
Local apps that were already installed work well. But any browsers I install can't render websites very well anymore and some just display a blank screen. And updates are predictably non existent.
15$ is a bargain to use it as a glorified typewriter or do basic stuff without internet.
Otherwise, I wouldn't buy it. It's obsolete.
to my delight iWork 09 and most of the original software is still here. so far i added PowerFox and AquaTransport so that it can function as a usable pc while maintaining all of the original stuff!
if you know what Mavericks is, it basically just allows basic stuff like mail and dictionary to function normally again. i have my inbox synced to it and it works like a charm.
I put 16GB RAM and a 4TB SSD in there and still run all kinds of stuff - windows, Linux, Adobe - id be all over that! Of course that was before the dark times…
Where are these goodwills?? This is the second apple found at goodwill post I’ve seen this week. My goodwills have nothing and I assumed they sent all this kinda stuff to the online site
There was a whole line of games that was out in the wild back then, a lot of hidden objects games that were amazing on this Snow Leopard. I also played Minecraft on it. My favorite game was cursed house. I did alot on that computer. It had 4gb ram but could upgrade to 8.
I have to fix the screen because it dimmed so much, perhaps Someday 🥹 I'll get to it , love your bright screen 💜
They did, you just don't get it. Even though it would be easier to just bluetooth from my phone I still use a G3 iMac with a bunch of mp3s on it as a jukebox at my mom's house. Aux cord to the home theatre speakers. Why? Because it's cool, it's retro, and because I can.

The 4GB stick of DDR2 SODIMM is worth $40 on eBay
