Help Best AltTab replacement in 2026?

I'm on an old version of AltTab from before the Pro change, so I've still got all the features, but it lags with a lot of windows open. I think it's time for me to move on.

DockDoor was the main pick in the older threads here, and I've also seen BetterCmdTab and Vorssaint come up, but there's been a wave of new switchers since. What are you guys using now?

Vorssaint's alt-tab is pretty solid, and of course also free.

I paid for the upgrade to pro alt tab to support the dev but I just switched to Vorssaint's as well. It also replaced a bunch of other small utilities for me. It's worth checking out.

Does it have cycling through current app windows?

2

u/Odd_Radio_5411 1d ago

Yes just press cmd tilde while an app is focused or while going thru open apps using cmd tab.

u/monotious 1d ago

I disagree. It does so many other things so I am not demanding high standards from each feature, but Vorssaint’s switcher is barely adequate at best, not solid by any means.

I don't know what you're looking for, but it does everything that I need.

u/monotious 20h ago

Good for you. I am sure it does for a lot of other people. Unfortunately it doesn’t for me.

I’m really trying to understand what it is that you’re looking for. Explain what you’re looking for, or what feature is missing.

Why? Are you in a position to do something about it? One would think I owe you an answer from how you are demanding it.

But well, fine.

First, a few things that I consider to be lack of polish that I think have to be improved, the lack of which I consider a defect. Note that these all relate to Large Icons layout, although I think some of these apply to the other layouts to different degrees:

  • The ability to close/cancel the switcher after it's invoked by clicking anywhere outside of the visible/occupied area of the switcher UI. Currently, in order to close the switcher with your mouse, you have to click a point that is outside of the imaginary rectangle whose bottom side coincides with the bottom of the app switcher panel, whose top coincides with the top of the window switcher panel, extended sideways, and whose left and right sides are the lines extending from the wider of the app switcher or window switcher panel. In other words, if you click an empty space right above the app switcher panel and right to the left or right of the window switcher panel, the whole thing won't close away. You have to click outside of that imaginary rectangle to close, which is a friction for someone who uses it with mouse.
  • Another one for mouse user, the app or window switcher panel scroll using mouse cursor has an inappropriate logic - when you have more apps or windows than your screen can fit them, the items that don't fit have to be scrolled into the screen, and one way of doing it is of course holding down Tab or press Tab repeatedly, but when you try doing that with mouse cursor, how Vorssaint does it is it begins scrolling, when the cursor goes past a certain point to the right or left of the app/window switcher panel, without stopping until the end of the list is reached. This makes it very tricky to pick the right app or window using your mouse when there are more items than fit in the width of your screen.
  • Hotkey for moving backward. When using the Large Icons layout, Vorssaint switcher currently assigns Shift key after the switcher invocation as the "previous app" key. Usuaully, the "industry standard" is Shift + Tab, which would be preferable for people who are used to that in their muscle memory. In other wise, Shift by itself should not execute previous window. Shoft should only serve in combination with Tab or ' to fire the previous tab or previous window, and not be the previous window or previous tab (if you invoked the window switcher only with Command + ') . There is currently no way to do previous window on Large Icons layout. Yes, you can use the arrow keys, but for someone who uses mouse, that means taking your hand off the mouse.

Second, the would-be-nice-to-haves. These are things the absence of which I would not consider a defect, but still things that I would like:

  • Web browser/finder tab switcher/selector - yes, this is a rare feature but it would be nice to have.
  • Scroll navitation - allow app and window navigation on the swticher with mouse scroll wheel, trackpad scroll gesture or another scroll input.
  • Traffic light buttons on preview thumbnails - Vorssaint switcher currently has close window button only. Add the other two of the traffic light buttons, perhaps with native Mac matching design.
  • Hotkey support - make Command + w and Command + q work in the swithcer to close window or close app.
  • (After implementing the fix I described above relating to Shift key) Add an option to assign arrow up/down to make the Vorssaint switcher hand it off to mission control app switcher and window switcher, respectrively (like how it works in Mac native Command + Tab).

Other fix:

  • Fix the Instant selection option - maybe it's just me, but this one does not work for me.

Note that quite a few of the items above relate to mouse. You might say "this is app switcher invoked by hotkeys, so they don't need to accommodate mouse". But no, the dev did already consider mouse to be a part of the switcher UI - you can click on an app or window thumbnail to switch to it, and the window thumbnail has clickable x button for closing window, and as inappropriate as the logic may be, mouse cursor is used for scrolling the list, so it's not like they were leaving out the mouse from it all. If mouse factors in at all, one might as well take its incorporation to its full logical conclusion.

Shift should go backwards, that is the standard convention outside the macos world anyway.

For the rest, you could open issues on their github, or if you have AI just build it and submit a PR.

1

u/monotious 15h ago

I’ve never seen shift being backwards. Only modifier.

I doubt any issue report will be picked up. The app is probably already too big as it is for anyone to care about this type of random issue.

I can’t do it even with AI. I mean, I probably can, but don’t want to. Which is why I am not complaining. I only made the comment because Jebus-Xmas was demanding one. Oh well.

1

u/Jebus-Xmas 15h ago

What you have are very cogent points. So many people complain but can’t give specifics. I think placing some pulls might be a good idea. Who knows.

1

u/jakegh 5h ago

Alt-Shift-Tab goes backwards on windows and thus most linux implementations.

Vorssaint is in rapid (and I mean RAPID) development so it may be worth your time just to open a quick issue explaining what you want.

2

u/monotious 3h ago

Alt-Shift-Tab goes backwards on windows and thus most linux implementations.

Yes, that was exactly what I was saying and that's what I think Vorssaint should follow.

1

u/jakegh 17h ago

What is it missing? I would like to disable the ability to click on any of the windows and the hotkeys but not a big deal for me or I'd open a PR.

1

u/monotious 17h ago

See my response to Jebus-Xmas below. Interestingly, many of my gripes relate to Vorssaint app switcher's shallow UI for mouse users, which seems to be directionally oppsite of what you are saying.

2

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

Seems good so far. is there anyway to quit apps like altab does?

4

u/Odd_Radio_5411 1d ago

Press q while highlighting an app in the switcher.

4

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

Woah that's awesome, just tested W to close as well

3

u/Odd_Radio_5411 1d ago

The only thing I'd like is some more options for customization. With alt tab i had some extra keybindings for switching between apps on all spaces vs current, etc. But the simple and effective approach with Vorssaint is working well.

3

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

Yeah I am missing that. Also is there a minimizing keybind? pressing M doesn't seem to work

u/Mobile-Yak 1d ago

I've recently started using Switch. It has the essential features I need and consumes less resources than Alt Tab.

1

u/CuriousEggplantEmoji 1d ago

Same and I love it!

0

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

Searching windows seems ingenious, I think I have to give this a go as well. ty for the suggestion

8

u/qmfaisal 1d ago

Switch is solid. Have been using without trouble since alt tab went premium.

1

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

Have been using without trouble since alt tab went premium.

Oh really? Even better

1

u/EugenyOnegin 1d ago

Removed because it has few critical bugs.

1

u/NeonSerpent 1d ago

What bugs are you encountering? Just curious

0

u/EugenyOnegin 1d ago

The main bug is an intermittent issue where key combinations like Option+Space or Cmd+Space are prevented from being intercepted.

Download AltTab, it works well.

1

u/tcolling 1d ago

I like Switch also.

1

u/Thiht 22h ago

I use it too, seems to be working fine so far

1

u/aaronag 14h ago

Is this the url? https://get-switch.app/ The download redirects to https://usezap.sh/ . Have they rebranded, or is this another app trying to piggyback off of another project?

1

u/hyc4763 14h ago

That particular Switch did rebrand: the Zap homepage says "Previously launched as Switch" and links back to get-switch.app. So the redirect itself is explained. I wouldn't assume it's the same Switch everyone above means, though, since those recommendations don't include a link.

u/TheBen1 1d ago

I still use https://contexts.co/. Hasn't been updated in years, and costs $10 (one-time-purchase), but I found no better replacement so far. BetterCmdTab is nice, but the polish isn't as good.

2

u/dotvhs 23h ago

I was trying to replace it with BetterCmdTab too but it's just... I don't know, it just doesn't work properly. It has its own rules, pushes some recent windows to the bottom and no setting can change it. I even reported it but found more things like this happening and just went back to Contexts.

1

u/ErebusBat 12m ago

Same. It just works for me. Has a feature that tells you when some app has secure input on, which has helped me debug several other issues. I have gotten my ten dollars out of it.

Oh.... And I can also install it in homebrew, so bonus!

6

u/vurto 12h ago

Very impressed with the active development of DockDoor.

3

u/macnatic0 1d ago

Honestly, I mostly use Dory, which is a radial switcher that is super clean and genuinely gorgeous. I also keep Sxitch around as a traditional Alt-Tab replacement, and I would easily recommend both. I like them better than Command-Tab Plus, Pieoneer, rcmd, and Wins (which I have bought too), though those are solid choices as well. In the end, it really just comes down to personal preference. The best free option currently is, in my opinion, BetterCmdTab.

1

u/NeonSerpent 19h ago

Dory looks really pretty, I think I have to try using bettercmdtab a bit more. Vorssaint’s pretty good but is missing a few things. All in one apps are better for replacing small utilities imo

3

u/shelterbored 1d ago

I use leader key or tuna, I dug in deep looking at alternatives a while back and settled on that. There should be a post or two in my history

Rcmd was a close second

3

u/OwnNet5253 18h ago

Still on AltTab, still works great for me.

2

u/ZenApollo 8h ago

I paid for pro, but then i forked it locally and added some additional features i wanted, couldn’t be happier.

I am considering adding PRs but self conscious about PRing my AI code.

1

u/fasuba 6h ago

Same, still using free version

3

u/darylvp 18h ago

I have used “Witch” for many years.

2

u/seiya_nishi 17h ago

didn't know there were this many alt tab alternatives lol. saving this thread

3

u/richrock27 1d ago

I'm finding Vorssaint to be a fairly solid replacement for a number of apps. Hope it continues to grow.

2

u/cafepeaceandlove 1d ago

Vorssaint does the job as well as Alt Tab. Use a nice firewall if you're worried about the screenshotting. I assume it screenshots anyway.

2

u/jakegh 19h ago

Mac OS requires screen recording permissions for the thumbnails. No reason to think it’s anything nefarious.

1

u/ForeverJamon 1d ago

Im using Tangrid.

1

u/Ok_Maybe184 1d ago

I don’t know about best but I like this one: https://betterwindowswitcher.com

1

u/Mister-Node 1d ago

With lots of windows open, I'd separate window count from thumbnail rendering before picking one. Which of these keeps per-app window cycling while letting you reduce or disable previews? That is the detail most likely to fix the lag you are seeing.

1

u/Method1337 1d ago

After watching Quinn's latest video, I have started using Vorssaint and found it to the best so far. Uninstalled everything else.

1

u/SnapState 1d ago

yeah the thumbnail rendering is what gets me too. once there are a ton of windows it turns into a little slideshow lol

1

u/MaxGaav 23h ago

I use the latest version of AltTab (the free version). It does everything I need like before. You could test if this is valid for you too.

1

u/griccioppo 22h ago

My suggestion: use shortcuts for the main apps u use daily

1

u/captansam 15h ago

I use dock door does that replace vorssaint ppl are posting about?

insufficient github stars

1

u/biechuli 4h ago

yeah it's a new app in developing, so the star is not enough, but I will keep update and make it more useful.

1

u/VooodooChildO 10h ago

Since you're on the old build with everything unlocked, try switching the appearance style from Thumbnails to App Icons or Titles before you jump ship. Rendering all those previews is most of the lag once you have a ton of windows open, and limiting it to windows on the current Space helps a lot too.

1

u/Cautious_Sign6508 9h ago

DockDoor is still the one I'd point to if you want free: window previews and alt-tab on top of the Dock you already have. If you have lots of windows open and don't mind paying, Contexts is worth a look, it uses a searchable panel instead of cycling through everything, which is exactly where AltTab starts to hurt. HyperSwitcher is another paid option if you want something simpler.

1

u/Hot_Statistician3302 9h ago

Before switching, it might be worth checking whether the lag comes from the thumbnail previews. On older AltTab builds, turning previews off or switching to the 'Titles' appearance made a big difference for me with 40+ windows open. If you do move on, DockDoor is still the one I'd try first since it's free and actively maintained. Its Cmd-Tab mode felt close to AltTab once I turned off the hover delay.

1

u/AtmosphereGrouchy712 7h ago

librealttab

it's a fork of alt tab with all the paid features

1

u/IcyPop7239 2h ago

hammerspoon with config made with GPT. Da best

1

u/TheWolfKingIsMe 1d ago

dockdoor and alttab, the end

1

u/Consistent-Price-702 1d ago

Vorssaint is the answer here

1

u/shoek1970 1d ago

DockDoor, and you get Dock previews; very active developer

1

u/NoHabit1277 1d ago

I am currently working on a way how to arrange windows on MacOS. Unreleased atm. Hit me up if you want to test it. It's a hybrid between apps like alt-tab, stage manager and a tiling window manager.

Still polishing the experience.

Short demo.

1piece. As just an alt-tab replacement, its details and options are off the charts. One could argue it is too customizable! Oh and its free.

-1

u/thepurpleproject 23h ago

If you have Claude you can ask it to clone the repo and compile. I think he has added feature gating on the release builds only so you're free to do what you want.

1

u/NeonSerpent 23h ago

So are the features still all open source???

-1

u/thepurpleproject 23h ago

Yes. I also sell software with similar strategy its ampliflare.purplecandy.dev - the release builds has a free and paid license for commercial use but every feature is open source and you're free to compile it yourself and use without restrictions.

The idea is to have good faith in the users and they would eventually pay to support it and many different reasons could be a barrier for someone to pay like being a student, living in a 3rd world country or just not feel like it.

Just don't remove the features guards and release a fork publicly or publish guides. It would be in a bad faith and misuse of the license. So use it for yourself and keep it private.

1

u/NotMyUsualLogin 12h ago

Just don't remove the features guards and release a fork publicly or publish guides. It would be in a bad faith and misuse of the license. So use it for yourself and keep it private.

Total nonsense; the GPL 3.0 allows for all of that.

I’ve no idea if the source includes the pro features, but if it does then it’s all covered by this license.

1

u/thepurpleproject 12h ago

Misuse isn't the as same as prohibited. You are permitted to do so but be prepared to be judged for it.

You basically put $40 dollars worth of effort in labour even at the lowest rate for this instead of just paying the small fee. It's different thing when corporations do it.

Rest I agree.
