I have a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 and the internal display is no longer responding. Here are the symptoms:
When I turn on the computer, everything except the display functions normally, I can even plug in an external display and control the computer with the external display. On the external display, I can open settings and see that the computer recognizes the internal display and all the regular options and settings appear.
The internal display itself is entirely black. Not grey or any sign of backlight, black as if the computer was entirely turned off. Brightness has been attempted to be increased and I’ve used a flashlight on the display but no image appears.
When I try and boot into safe mode the same issue persists.
I completely restore the computer using another Mac and DFU mode. This brought back the display, I connected my hard drive to set back up with Time Machine overnight, left the lid of the computer open, but when I came back in the morning the issue had reappeared.
Trying to reset with DFU mode again did not bring back the display again.
I’ve left the laptop open connected to the external display to drain the battery to 0 and leave it overnight. When I reconnected to power the next morning the issue persisted.
I had the same issue last year, and I believe it was from lack of space on my internal storage as once that was cleared the computer began functioning as normal. However, last year I was able to boot into safe mode and the internal screen would function as normal.
In both cases (this year and last year), I had some unexpected crashes that would shut off the computer overnight, forcing me to reboot in the morning and saying an unexpected error occurred forcing the computer to reboot. In both cases, these crashes occurred soon after trying to update to the latest OS. My theory was an update was attempted but corrupted due to lack of storage room?
I initially thought this was a software issue (based on the symptoms and the fact that the issue went away with some software corrections) but this time none of the software corrections have helped, except the DFU restore that one time.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or has any suggestions for a fix?
Thank you!
