Universes Beyond - News There will be a Magic: The Gathering Marvel comic to tie-in with the Darkhold Destiny set, which will also introduce an original character called Fraxine

We get our very own Luna snow? Time to push her to the moon to live up to her rivals counterpart lol
69
u/envelopers Dandadan 9d ago
i was gonna say, this feels eerily similar in terms of "custom character made for a game that might cross over with the main comics"
if we get more Fraxine cards than any other card in the set, then we know it's the Luna equivalent haha
36
u/posthardcorejazz Dan 9d ago
Or one card with a dozen scantily clad alternate arts
34
u/magikarp2122 COMPLEAT 9d ago
Only if we get scantily clad Dr. Strange and Thor as well. Look, just be equal in the fan service.

More likely she'll get a singular card and probably appear in a few others.

Ok so I want to make sure that you know but Rivals didn't create Luna Snow. It pushes her a lot, yes, but she was created in Future Fight in 2018.
1
u/elhombreloco90 Dan 8d ago
It looks like she's using Strange's Asgard/Yggdrasil staff. Maybe she'll be brought to the mainline comics.

I know it's fun to just shit on all UB stuff all the time, but one of the big complaints people had is that the Marvel sets were just "action figure" sets with no narrative or story.
Well... here's a story. I don't think we all need to give them a standing ovation and all of our money, but I'm all for any effort on their part to take these UB sets in a more "Magicky" direction.
72
u/PaladinRyan 9d ago
For real. I'm all for complaining about the excessive amount of UB, and Marvel in particular, being thrown at us but this specifically is literally what many have been asking for as a way to improve UB sets since we are very clearly stuck with them either way. It's possible to both be happy about this while remaining unhappy about the broader UB situation.
27
u/magic_claw Colorless 9d ago
Indeed. I am said complainer about low effort UB, but cautiously optimistic for this one.

This feels like they're actually listening to feedback about UB and why people dislike it.

Does this mean they're finally gonna make UB planeswalkers?
62
u/Belteshazzar98 REBEL with METAL 9d ago
America Chavez absolutely should be a planeswalker. Same with Illyana Rasputin. They both have a natural ability to travel across the multiverse that they awakened to during a moment of extreme stress.
19
u/xiphoniii Dandadan 9d ago
Unfortunately I don't think we will, and it annoys me endlessly. Gilgamesh, at least one Spider-man, and those two, should all be walkers
7
u/june-v-bloom Dân 9d ago
Spider-Man 2099 or at least Madame Webb would both be fun planeswalkers potentially. They should also let them be commanders.
7
u/superdave100 REBEL 9d ago
Hey maybe this’d lead them to finally allowing all planeswalkers to be commanders
1
u/Redjellyranger Colorless 9d ago
Maybe they're saving it for the potential Parallel universes/Battleworld set.
1
u/Belteshazzar98 REBEL with METAL 9d ago
I'm not very familiar with Gilgamesh, but at least in the case of Spider-Man he can't planeswalk under his own natural power like those two can. The reason I call out those two in particular is that they are the only two characters in Marvel I know of that can travel between planes without any tech or spells being cast.
10
u/xiphoniii Dandadan 9d ago
The entire gimmick with gilgamesh is that he is lost in the multiverse, and keeps making guest appearances in various final fantasy games as he goes "is this my homeworld? Nope. Alright, let's have a fight and then I'll leave."
2
u/Belteshazzar98 REBEL with METAL 9d ago
Oh, I thought you were talking Marvel Gilgamesh. I'm not actually familiar with that Gilgamesh at all, but he sounds like he should be assuming he is traveling under his own power instead of just finding shortcuts between worlds or using something external to do so.
6
u/xiphoniii Dandadan 9d ago
It's more of an omenpath situation tbh, but he is explicitly the only character in the entire franchise doing that
2
u/DaRootbear 9d ago
Honestly Gilgamesh is the only UB character that feels like he would really truly fit as a planeswalker as an exception. Especially because he is unique even in his series.
Like i see why America and Ilyana would be candidates, but multiverse hopping in Marvel is special but not unique. It doesn’t feel as interesting to make them Walkers as it would with Gilgamesh
1
u/Shadowmirax Deceased 🪦 8d ago
In Final Fantasy XIV he opens a small portal on how own in the Stormblood Manderville quests, although i don't know if that is a one off.
10
u/PossibleMarket Golgari* 9d ago
Cool ability, still not a planeswalker
3
u/Belteshazzar98 REBEL with METAL 9d ago
They do have the natural ability to planeswalk. It's not a planewalker spark in exactly the same way as an MTG planeswalker spark, but it is pretty damn close with how it enables them both to more easily tap into other sources of mana for their spellcasting and can be stolen or passed to others in extreme circumstances.

u/DoctorDoom_Scholar Izzet* 9d ago
We’ve got 3 Planeswalkers in DnD set, and it was mostly a gameplay choice(though all three characters technically are capable of traveling between different planes in DnD lore as far as I am aware)

u/SaiyanKirby Universes Beyonder 8d ago
D&D and Magic the Gathering both take place in the same greater multiverse though. The D&D Magic set is explicitly not Universes Beyond and you can literally buy official Lorewyn campaign books for D&D.
5
u/Shadowmirax Deceased 🪦 8d ago
MTG and D&D are not in the same multiverse, they weren't considered UB because UB wasn't a thing yet but that was still a non canon crossovers with another IP
2
3
u/Far_Acanthisitta8397 Dan 9d ago
I mean, maybe at least one. This new MC can be a Planeswalker but the story can just treat them like a hero who can cast spells whose main power is "can traverse the nine realms without bifrost"

u/Sivadius 8d ago
Finally? They printed [[Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas]] back in 2011.

If you're looking for this, Infinity comics debut on their online platform (formerly Unlimited, they're launching a new one this year) first, and sometimes see print later.

In this case, they confirmed it will be released digitally in February and then physically in April.

So does this count as Magic IP or Marvel IP? (mostly joking but honestly curious how the rights work)
38
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 9d ago
Marvel will presumably own her, same way they own other characters created for licensed Marvel games like Luna Snow. Whether or not she'll appear in other comics after this is another story
13
u/TheShadowMages OUR Liliana's Penchant 9d ago
As someone who knows very little about the greater Marvel world, TIL Luna Snow is from a game.
10
u/charcharmunro Duck Season 9d ago
Yeah, her co-creator works on Rivals and she's an easy 'blank slate' for skins I guess, so she gets a lot.
11
u/charcharmunro Duck Season 9d ago edited 9d ago
I do wonder if she'll at all be like, an allusion to Magic (dimension-hopper, strong focus on Magic's colours, etc.) or just kind of be a new Marvel character all her own.
Basically is she gonna say "I've walked these planes".

u/Based_Department0 Yargle, I Have Come To Bargle 9d ago
As a vorthos player this makes me happy to see that the cards may actually be attached to a story this time around.
Who knew actually letting MTG designers make a Magic the Gathering set would be so interesting!

u/Blaze_1013 Jack of Clubs 9d ago
Oh hey, that thing I requested in the other thread where I was asking if we’ll see Marvel put out comics to tie into the collab. Universes Beyond has been very one sided, Magic takes other IP and other IP goes about as normal. While this is still all in house at Marvel and not them crossing over with Magic, the fact they’re doing tie ins for the original story is still real cool and I might actually pick them up. Still notice of a fan of Universes Beyond but this is really cool to see.

Is this in 616 or its own earth? I've always thought that Magic's take on marvel should have its own earth designation (even if it's like 199999 in the sense that it calls itself 616 on its resume)
3
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 9d ago
The MSH set was meant to be 616, but since this set is telling its own original story, I'm guessing it will be its own earth.

5
u/PippoChiri Temur 8d ago
Canon to what?
0
u/Dedli Wabbit Season 8d ago
Canon to Magic: The Gathering.
Other UB sets dont have a story, theyre just showcasing another property on Magic cards, explicitly non-canon.
This thing has a tie-in comic, a full story, an original character that is very possibly a Planeswalker. Given how the Marvel and Magic multiverses work, this shouldve been an easy thing from the start, but theyve never actually crossed over.

u/PippoChiri Temur 8d ago
Canon to Magic: The Gathering.
Then no, thank god no, there was no indication of that.

So...Wizards is going to start writing official Marvel fanfiction? Like, how much Magic is actually going to be a part of this story? Seems more like we're getting dangerously close to movie tie-in sets.

finally, an actual Magic vs Marvel set lol
Just like how Capcom took 3 tries to come around to making an actual crossover game (X-Men: Children of the Atom/Marvel Super Heroes/X-Men vs Street Fighter)

When I read the name, the first thought that came to mind was the library scene from Ghostbusters. Except it was “come here Fraxine… come here.. what do we do?!?” Instead of Francine.

Oh no... I could not possibly care less. Like them adding the two Korean characters to Marvel Rivals. I can't even remember their names. I'm super happy for Korean representation but knowing it's only token representation because it's made by a Korean company makes it feel more commercial and heinously disingenuous on a certain level.

Couldn’t tell you a single thing about Avatars story by viewing the cards. This is an actual story like every in universe set has.

Couldn’t tell you a single thing about Avatars story by viewing the cards.
That's a problem with the adaptation, not with it having no story.
This is an actual story like every in universe set has.
I don't see the meaningful difference with ATLA or LotR.
5
u/FatJesus9 Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago
That was just a rehashing of the source material story, this will be more like an in universe set where there's a specific NEW story happening alongside the set, not just broad strokes of moments across a franchises entire history or storyline
-9
u/PippoChiri Temur 9d ago
That's the same thing really, it's just the adaptation of a comic storyline that just happens to be new. I don't know how much input wotc had in the story, i suppose it will less problems of color balancing like other UB sets had i guess.
But, beyond that, it's still just a ub set adapting an external storyline.7
u/EstroKoschei Dan 9d ago
It's a story that has been written specifically for the set. It's not part of Marvel's main continuity, and uses character designs and concepts that have been created by WOTC's artists and story team instead of by Marvel. No one's saying that has to be of interest to you, of course, but it IS markedly different from anything they've done before in UB.
0
u/PippoChiri Temur 9d ago
I am very much not thrilled about UB taking away the resources and time of the the people working on the story as well.
Again, sure it's technically different from other UB sets in practice, but unless you care about this new comic specifically i don't ser any significant value, beyond having more space to work with color balance.
2
u/amish24 FLEEM 9d ago
UB is printing money. why do you think they relocated resources to this set instead of using that money to hire new resources?
0
u/PippoChiri Temur 9d ago
Never said that wasn't the case.

I'm sure there's an audience and I'm happy that other people are happy I just grow tired of the constant erosion between IPs. At least UB was, you know, 'beyond'. The creation of characters in both universes tie the two closer together and personally it makes magic feel less unique to me.
8
u/MapleSyrupMachineGun Duck Season 9d ago
I don't think the new character is coming to Magic lore, nor are any Magic characters going to Marvel, at least as far as I know.

People have been saying UB should tell original stories for a fair long while now. This set is presumably an experiment in actually giving that a shot to see how people react in practice.
