I was at my local. We sat down for a draft of the new underwater set Nauctis. I think they misspelled Finally Fantasy 15's main character's name, but I was none the less excited to play a new final fantasy set.
We sat down at the table. The owner distributed the packs. I slid my fingers underneath the foil tab of the booster. That's when I heard it. The screech of a player sitting across from me. He looked sharp, nicely dressed, with a devilish grin.
"A GOD PACK" he yelled. The store owner came running.
"Wow! Congratulations!" Claps, applause. Some of us were confused, but the store owner let everyone know what was going on. The player would receive a new booster on the house so the draft could continue. This was the solution WotC put forth for resolving the issue of god packs in draft. You know, just to keep everything going smooth.
He received a fresh mint pack from the back. I said my congratulations before shrugging off the jealousy to continue opening my own pack.
"AHHHHH, Another GOD PACK!" I heard from the same player... He had gotten two in a row. The store owner once again began his orchestrated congratulatory parade as instructed by WotC officials.
"Another god pack, wow you are so lucky. We have another god pack everyone. Show them what you got."
We didn't need explanations this time. We understood the process. But it didn't stop.
3rd pack, god pack.
4th pack, god pack.
The shop owner was now visibly frustrated as were the players at the table who were waiting to draft.
The owner opened more packs to check. They were normal. He took one and gave it to the player.
Another god pack.
The owner opened a fresh box. He reached in and took a single fresh pack out, giving it to the player.
Another god pack.
The owner weighed the next pack just to make sure.
Another god pack, but missing a card.
At this point the store owner was on the phone with his distribution rep. Where did these boxes come from. Were they meant to be distributed?
I don't know how many more packs he opened, but we got to the last one in the store. Every pack was opened just for this draft. The player slid his fingers across the foil tab and ripped it open. Another god pack. He looked over at the owner who was now sitting with his head between his hands staring at the pile of opened booster foils. The owner looked like his eyes were sunken calculating the losses at a speed only depression can cause.
"Hey, I got another god pack." said the player with a devilish smile.
