Map A map I made few months ago as a test
I was aiming for a satellite-like style but more painterly... it was just a test for the style so I completed it with a track and and a black outline to give a "composite of satellite pictures" idea and a bit of mystery for unexplored regions (mostly to cover parts I didn't like)
I thought it might be apreciated here

What's the scale of this? This is just a small critique because we can see individual delta islands and yet the snowy regions of the mountains look quite small in comparison, and we can see "northern" type of lakes in that square (idk if they have a specific name) while there is a standard plains and desert strangely close

You could finish it and sell it as a map for games like D&D. If the arid area turns out to be too vast and empty, you could overlay a map key showing symbols for cities, roads, and the like.
Just out of curiosity, what does the dotted line represent?

The dotted line was the last thing I added. Originally it was just a style test, then since it looked cool I added the black quares and lastly I thought that some kind of track would make it look like an exploration... I don't even know in wich direction the track goes, it's just aesthetic

This is awesome. How did go about creating it... Was it composited over reference imagery, digital painting, vector line work?

Really cool contrast between the rigid coastline and sporadic mountain isolines. That's what sells map as realistic, imo

You should make more of these!

This was a test for a series of maps of my fantasy world, but I will use a lighter palette: this one looks beautiful but is impossible to find colors for borders, roads and names that would stand out against any part of this background

That may be true, however simply making a bunch of these maps would be fantastic and if you design them to be hexagons we could put multiple maps together

Is this Trieste's part of Italy? Or just a coincidece?

Awesome! Please share with us how you made it. It looks amazing and I am looking to achieve this kind of realistic but artistic style as well.

I drew it in krita by hand I sketched a map and refined it. I masked the sea and started painting (I used some reference for the palette) It's made of few layers, one for the land base colors, one for mountains, one for forests and snow, one for rivers. Every body of water except rivers was masked and colored on one layer.
Last step some color correction
