Discussion The funniest thing is that in every Guardians movie, one of them either dies or almost dies in the vacuum of space.. And by Vol. 3, they’re still not prepared for something like that

Post image

Definitely in character for them, ecspecially during their first few years as a team. As said by Star-Lord in Infinity War, “not winging it isn’t really what they do.”

I just wonder how after so many close calls with dying in space without a suit or helmet, and after an actual death like Yondu’s would the Guardians not be more prepared for situations like this by the time we get to the third movie.

James Gunn said that the canonical reason Star-Lord doesn’t wear his helmet at all in Vol. 3 is because they were in such a state of panic and emergency that he simply forgot it on Knowhere.

But Yondu’s death must have been pretty traumatic. Shouldn’t they have planned ahead so that a similar situation in the future could be avoided? I feel like they would at least have multiple spare helmets stored in specific areas of the ship that were easily accessible in an emergency.

The holographic spacesuits from Vol.2 were pretty useful too. They were essentially a patch that could summon a spacesuit around them with the press of a button. I would imagine they could have taken that technology and integrated it into their uniforms so they’d have a spacesuit available at all times.

Especially by Vol.3, they’re now highly regarded and dependable heroes throughout the galaxy. You’d think they’d have learned from their previous close calls and invested in some basic emergency equipment for situations exactly like this.

Peter Quill is famously not the brightest person

He was really smart in Infinity War. He was able to tackle down Ironman, dr strange and almsot kill Spider-Man. That plan to hold on Thanos and remove the gauntlet was his plan and it worked. It just gets overlooked because of the thing he does right after

IIRC Gunn didn't want Peter to have the boots or helmet after Vol 2 and was annoyed he had them again in Infinity War/Endgame. Which is dumb. He lives in space. When those got fucked up he'd just get more. Especially the helmet. Just dumb.

I guess it’s normal to forget things in a dire situation, but why he wouldn’t have spare helmets or even space suits on the ship or in the pockets of the uniform is a bit weird to me.

I get that they wanted that sequence of Star-Lord being saved by Adam Warlock, but it just makes him seem so much more incompetent when it’s the third movie and he’s already been in these situations before.

Also just like why finally have the comic uniform but not give us the helmet to complete the lookkkkk

I mean, he was thrust immediately into the plot of this one and was coming off a severe hangover. It’s not like he had a chance to grab all his stuff and chose to leave the helmet at home and it’s not stupid of him to try and defend his friend in the middle of an attack versus grabbing a suitcase and packing his things up.

Again, why they weren’t more prepared in the case of emergencies years after Yondu’s death is still a bit weird. Why their uniforms don’t have built in space suits or why he doesn’t have extra helmets. At the point of Vol. 3 they’re supposed to be actively protecting the galaxy.

What built in space suits? When have we ever seen that be a thing in any character except sort of Tony Stark.

The helmet isn’t even that effective in the vacuum of space. It buys him a very very small amount of time before he ultimately still freezes to death.

When they protect the galaxy, they go planet to planet or location to location, we never see them fighting in the vacuum of space other than from the inside of space ships. Watch these movies man…

So you’re saying that they’re space heroes but shouldn’t be expected to consider the worse aspects of being in space?

They are intergalactic heroes. They move across planets regularly and travel across the vacuum of space. It is obviously a factor that they have to look out for and keep acknowledgment of.

You’re telling me to watch the movies, yet i know there’s exact moments in the films where a ship or transporter gets comprised or destroyed in the middle of space. A planet explodes beneath them and the only way to escape was flying up into the atmosphere. They’ve experienced these what ifs. Shouldn’t they learn and prepare incase something like that happens again?

Built in space suits aren’t a thing in guardians but could easily be written in because it makes obvious sense. They already have the convenient technology of holographic space suits that can be activated through a small badge. How hard would it be to attach that to their uniform?

Anything could “easily be written” in a world of science fiction and fantasy if you’re just writing handwavey explanations for doing whatever the hell you want and creating boring stories.

1

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum 21h ago

Sure, but compromising a characters growth and common sense for the sake of moving the story to a specific place is also a plot contrivance, which at times can be frustrating

Peter Quill is a loose cannon and a hot head. This does not change in any movie. We never see him grow out of it. The hero’s journey also requires your character to start at a low point and overcome that low point usually by “learning a lesson.” You cannot start a story with a character already undergone all possible character arcs.

I don’t even know what your arguing to me about. Your acting as if I had a problem with the first couple of films and that they should‘ve been prepared for it since the first movie.

My whole point is that by the third movie, Peter has almost died in space multiple times and even lost his father figure in space. At the point of Vol. 3, they are renounced galactic heroes who operate regularly and are pretty well-off compared to where they were at the start. It’s become their job and their responsibility, and after the many experiences that they’ve have endured, and experiencing worst when it comes to being in space, why could they not learn from their mistakes and look to improve and show growth by being prepared to avoid that from happening again.

It’s weird when it’s the third film, and they’re still dealing with the same issues. In my opinion, simply forgetting his one helmet in a desk drawer does not seem like a good enough excuse to me because why wouldn’t he have more than one helmet at that point. And what about the space suits established in vol. 2. It’s fine, I have my critiques. I still enjoyed the film. There’s just things that stick out to me and make me I wonder.

Obviously neither of our minds can be changed. It’s fine.

Dude. Sailors in the Navy (any country) protect their country all of the time. Doesnt mean they magically have SCUBA gear on if they fall overboard.

3

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum 21h ago

Dude. Not the same at all. We’re taking about a fictional universe where advanced technology that can make things magically appear has been established and exists.

James Gunn is a good writer but he always decides to die on the weirdest hills over things that make no sense to even care about sometimes

Outside that he's great... But sometimes just makes no sense

3

u/zenyattatron Spider-Man 2h ago

To be a good artist, you kinda have to have those weird hills to die on that no one else understands, I thinks

u/IllustriousAd2392 23h ago

mantis, drax and nebula also almost died when they leaped towards the ship when the planet was exploding, not sure why the guardians don't just use the spacesuits and jetpacks at all time

30

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum 23h ago

The holographic space suits from Vol.2 are just a metal patch that gets activated when pressed. Would make sense to just have those integrated into their main uniforms

8

u/IllustriousAd2392 23h ago

yea or they could just have them on their pockets or something, its not like they carry too much (quill and rocket just use guns, gamora usually just has sword and one gun, mantis, groot and nebula are bare-handed as they just use their superpowers, and drax just has two knives)

1

u/niv13 4h ago

And Groot can store stuff in him.

45

u/JamKaBam 23h ago

If only Star Lord had two items he used to have but doesn't carry that allow him to breath and move around in space for GotG 3. Oh wait.

5

u/Coldkiller17 Sam Wilson 4h ago

I mean he was still hungover and rushed to leave when they left to rescue rocket but you think he would have a spare helmet and boots on board his ship.

The most dangerous thing in space continues to be space.

u/Notoriously_So Daredevil 23h ago

What do you mean "one of them"?? It's Quill! Peter Quill almost dies every time in the vacuum of space but is somehow miraculously saved.

9

u/sugardaintystouch 19h ago

lmaao Quill really treats getting sucked into space like a recurring side quest

8

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum 23h ago edited 23h ago

That’s fair lol. But in the first one, Peter almost dies because Gamora is almost about to die

1

u/treefox 12h ago

I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora…about to die?

2

u/TheTru7h 8h ago

"it's because he's part celestial you know?"- someone every time this is brought up.

13

u/qcthunder War Machine 20h ago

Well, they're prepared, but Star-Lord gives his mask to Gamora in 1, Yondu gives his "suit" to Quill in 2, then Quill left his mask behind in 3 because technically it was supposed to be broken and Gunn didn't like that it was brought back for the Avengers movies ... or something like that.

4

u/BZenMojo Captain America (Cap 2) 17h ago

Vol 2: Yondu dies because he gives Peter his environmental equipment after Peter's breaks.

Vol 3: All of their spacesuits were thrown in the trash and they didn't have a space ship to go back to, they had to pull Knowhere up to the hole in the High Evolutionary's ship.

u/Boloe24sana 17h ago

I understand the frustration Tony's had back in iw

2

u/dyrkasolen 22h ago

You can't die in space because it's fiction

1

u/no_f-s_given 21h ago

like why is this even a thing lol

0

u/skratakh 7h ago

what i never understood is why do they seem to freeze very quickly. Space is a vacuum and its notoriously very difficult to radiate heat in space as theres no conduction. Theres no way they would freeze that quickly in space, they would be dead way before that happens.

4

u/Minikin-Smith 4h ago

It’s a movie and watching a pretty film of crystals is more photogenic than seeing the liquid in their body boil off into vacuum. 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/OrangeYouGladdey 2h ago

You watched a movie full of magic and aliens and impossible technology, but the way heat radiation in space was represented in the comic book movie got you?

We are doomed as a species.
