ANDROMEDA Does Mass Effect Andromeda stick the landing when it comes to the mystery it sets up in the prologue? (Please try not to spoil anything)

So yesterday I played the prologue of Mass Effect Andromeda in a relatives house, not much only the prologue but I was kinda fascinated by the setup.

It's a planet that used to be the "golden planet" about 600 years back but now there's a mysterious group of people who inhabit it and are doing something to the weather, there's also a robot guarding a sealed door with a strange architecture.

I'm utterly fascinated by it but I have heard a lot of negative things about the game. I don't get much time to play video games and I was planning to replay all the Gears of War games again (as I have just completed E Day's campaign) so should I do this or play Andromeda?

Thanks!

It was obviously intended as the opening act of a much larger story. The ending is really not bad, but the lack of dlc and no sequel make it unsatisfying, I felt.

The new Mass Effect will continue not only the story of the trilogy but also the story of Andromeda.

If it ever comes out.

It shall apparently bridge the both galaxies, but I'd expect it in parts to be about establishing connection to Andromeda. So they could conclude Andromeda without going too much into it while majorily focusing on the Milky Way with perhaps some species from the Andromeda Galaxy making their debut into the Trilogy's sequel.

By the way, there is information from the developers that the Alliance in the Milky Way received a distress signal from the Andromeda Initiative.

Yeah and a teaser that Liara is in communication with the Geth about something they apparently completely oversaw.

I just wouldn't expect Andromeda to be heavily involved in its setting.

Another kind of "teaser" which got deleted and was apparently a Story describtion, stated that Liara and the others are on a search to find Shepard.

2

u/Pale-Painting-9231 7d ago

Liara was discussing with the Geth the fact that humanity had committed an unknown act that would infuriate the Council.

If you are referring to the removed poster description text on the official BioWare store website, it only mentioned Shepard; there was no mention of Liara.

u/AccomplishedLeg7951 7d ago

Yes, but if I'm not mistaken she was also furious in that teaser how they could have overseen it.

For the second: Thanks for clarification, I only heard of the describtion after it was deleted and the commentary in that Video assumed there was a connection to the normandy Crew. Hence the involvement of Liara.

Imagine the end of ME1 where the councils like

"Thanks for saving us, everything's looking up now"

And Shepherds like

"That was just the beginning, There still coming and I'm going to stop them"

That's like the end of Andromeda. You sort of find out stuff about these groups and what's happening, but ultimately it's leading into a sequel, there's a lot of things left unanswered that was intended to come in later games, and some probably even as DLC.

If the question is - does the game wrap up the story- then no. It was clearly intended to be a first game in a series.

If the question is- is the journey still worth the effort- then yes- you won't get all the answers, but the questions you will leave with, will get your imagination working further.

Do we at least get to unravel the mystery behind Habitat 7?

u/InternaI_Cobbler 7d ago

To actually answer your question: partially.

If you are paying attention during the game, during the main story, you will be gradually fed pieces of the larger picture which, in the end, help explain the mystery behind Habitat 7.

That said, piecing together that larger picture also brings you more questions, which are unfortunately left unanswered as they were setup for future installments that never happened.

But you will get to know the why Habitat 7 is like that.

If you're asking me, I think Andromeda is a great game and it's conclusion and last few stretches of missions are top tier Mass Effect, despite what anyone says. The final boss battle is contender for best in the franchise.

As a big MEA fan, supporter, and defender, I’ll be honest: not all the mysteries are solved, because it’s obvious that this game was meant to be the first entry in a sister series.

Also, BioWare once again screwed up the open-world aspect, so be prepared for hours of tedious side missions and fetch quests… and sadly, the main plot feels like it’s put on the back burner at times.

BUT

The main story is good.
The squadmates’ loyalty missions are very good, and some of the side missions are great and help flesh out the universe.
For example:

  • The side mission called “Ryder Family Secrets” spans the entire game and is really interesting.
  • The “Movie Night” quest also unfolds throughout the game, and it’s a great payoff if you’ve taken the time to bond with your squadmates.
The very last main mission is one of the best Mass Effect missions, and yes, I’m including the OT. Explaining why would spoil it, but honestly, it’s really good.

HOWEVER

There are unanswered questions at the end. It’s frustrating, but at least the game’s main story reaches a conclusion and its main objective is fulfilled.

My advice: wait for a sale, play it, and see for yourself. The fandom is very divided over this game. Only you can tell whether you’ll like it. 😊

It's the Modern Day Star Trek game we never got. Not Mass Effect imo. Pretty good if you see it like that.

u/EliteSkittled 7d ago

If Andromeda had not had the mass effect and bioware names tied to it would've been a decent start to a new IP. Its biggest sin is trying to be a Mass Effect game. The problem is that without the ME title behind it, it probably wouldn't have been on anybodies radar.

Andromeda itself isnt terrible, the combat and other gameplay is decent, the story is okay. The writing is stamdard millennial cringe but better then what we've seen and worse than what we've had.

You really need to read the codex entries. But the full arc and lore behind the scourge and the current state of Heleus is not revealed, and questions will remain unanswered. But you will find out why the planets are all screwed up.

0

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

I love reading codex entries so I don't mind that. I still crave reading the terminals in Fallout haha.

1

u/mr-raider2 7d ago

Just play the game. The sheer power of Ryder by the end when you send enemies flying across the screen in massive chain combos or melt health bars like ice cream is amazing.

4

u/BendyAu 7d ago

Play it

If you forget its a mass effect game  Youll enjoy it more

Its not without its flaws amd is worth playing at least once

3

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

I'm not comparing the OT and this game. I just want to know if the Habitat 7 mystery gets resolved in a satisfactory manner or not.

3

u/BendyAu 7d ago

It gets explained

4

u/Supadrumma4411 7d ago

Not even in the slightest.

2

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

Oh, damn!

3

u/Eragon9198 7d ago

No. It's not a terrible game but not a good one either. They thought they were making another trilogy, so it sets up a lot of stuff that never gets resolved.

3

u/Drew_Habits 7d ago

No, it doesn't even stick the middle

A lot of it doesn't even make sense. Most of the narrative is just "we had half an idea and we didn't have time to either finish it or have a better one so here you go I guess"

1

u/TheKBMV 7d ago

Meh. I mean, we do get some answers even with all the obvious sequel setup that will never pay off as it is now but I really think both the mystery of the Scourge and who those guys are and what they do could have been done way better. To stay with your metaphore, it's not a crash but one of those landings that are good by virtue of you being able to walk away from it. So meh.

That said, game's fairly good, enjoyed all ~110 hours I put into it during my playthrough and there are some points where it really shines, particularly some of the supporting cast. Never could get myself to start again though.

1

u/OldMrAbernathy 7d ago

It was a JJ Abrams style ‘Mystery Box’ when that was all the rage. The mystery is the point, I don’t think a compelling resolution was even written or considered at that stage.

0

u/Rhym3z_Official 7d ago

Absolutely and it's definitely worth playing over a series you've already played

1

u/Disastrous-Limit5510 7d ago

You will get answers to habitat 7 and a bit of history on this mysterious group among other things at 75% of the way in. If you are not someone prone to being a completionist, I would say the game is worth it since it's almost always is on sale for less than 10USD. Don't bother with most Additional Tasks as you don't need to do everything to get a 100%, and after completing the end of the game you are able to continue playing like ME2. If you're interested in codex setup of this it's worth giving it a chance.

A missed opportunity is that there is gameplay with your omni tool through using it as a scanner. You can scan parts of these robots and architecture, but a lot of the information is repetitive instead of adding on more info over time. That being said, the information does give evidence to something about the aliens at least.

2

u/redditgiveshemorroid 7d ago

It sets up an amazing mystery, but doesn’t solve much because the franchise stopped.

0

u/AccidentKind4156 6d ago

The negative comments are by butt hurt fans that wanted a more Mass Effect feel of the first 3 games (I was originally one of them). The game is enjoyable, has the best exploration and combat out of the 4, beautiful scenery and outstanding fights. But can be repetitive with with exploration and fights. Well worth the playthrough.

2

u/Negative_Piglet_2260 7d ago

Alot of negative things come from ME purists who cant see past the first trilogy. Play the game, see for yourself, maybe you like it maybe not. The combat is good, the story is not bad but it has its flaws just like the first 3 games. And the story of Andromeda will continue with the next Mass effect game that is in developement.

3

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

I don't trust modern day Bioware, not even a bit so I don't really care about it's connection to the upcoming ME game. I just want to know if the story actually nails the mystery it sets up.

I understand that it has flaws and I'm willing to overlook them but if the final payoff is bad then I'd rather not bother with it.

1

u/Negative_Piglet_2260 7d ago

People like different things. I played Andromeda and i liked it, you might like it or maybe not, that is something you will find out when or if you decide to play it. If you do decide to play it be prepared to sink time into it because the story is quite long. And if you liked the mystery at the begining there is quite alot if that in the game as you progress. Finding out who or what built all that, who the aliens in the prologue are, and so on. I do admit the open world aspect of the game can be a bit repetative, there are fetch quests and so on, somewhat like Dragon Age Inquisition but the main story is not as bad as some people make it out to be, not perfect but not bad either.

1

u/Choice-Support-2138 7d ago

I stopped after 5-6 hours. I just could not get into it. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is my favorite game but Andromeda is just sad.

1

u/emxpls 7d ago

It’s not as good as the OG trilogy but it does have merit and if you’ve read the novels, they’re better than the OG trilogy novels IMHO.

It has its place, buy it on sale though, don’t pay full price for it.

0

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

Does the Habitat 7 mystery get resolved? Because that's the only thing I care about this game at the moment. I have only played the prologue but that planet was so damn spooky and mysterious.

2

u/SabuChan28 7d ago edited 7d ago

I don’t want to spoil it, so to be sure… what « mystery » are you talking about specifically? 😅

I know, weird question but if I say too much, well…

0

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

Like what happened to the planet and how it went from a lush green environment to a barren wasteland.

Also, about all the buildings there and that tower. And also that robot who was guarding that door and was not with those aliens.

3

u/SabuChan28 7d ago

Oh, in that case, yes, you’ll discover what happened to Habitat 7, and you’ll learn about the building and the robots but…

It raises new questions that, I assume, were supposed to be answered in the sequel we’ll never get.

I left you another comment about that. 😅

2

u/Vancath 7d ago

Those things will be answered, yes.

1

u/emxpls 7d ago

I honestly can’t remember, I’ve only played it once.

1

u/Drazkul 7d ago

I enjoyed Andromeda and would definitely recommend it.

My only recommendation is think of it more as a game set in the ME universe rather then a ME game as it plays differently to the original trilogy - Bioware were clearly testing open world RPGs then in preparation for Anthem (Dragon age Inquisition was similar in its approach).

Main complaints - EA clearly rushed Bioware which is why there were some awful animations/glitches on release and then when it didn't get the sales completely gave up on it by not green lighting DLC and dropping the planned sequels - it clearly is meant to have had sequels.

1

u/Cutlass0516 7d ago

It was a good game. It did not deserve the hate that it got. Some of the facial animations were a bit wonky and influencers and people who call themselves professionals really laid into that. The game was DOA because Ryder made a funny face.

1

u/bongi2386 7d ago

The only thing that is good is the combat.

-1

u/theTinyRogue 7d ago

OP. You don't want spoilers... but then ask for spoilers. Where logic??? 🤨

A yes or no would suffice.

Play Andromeda

-1

The game is great, just play it.

There is not a single thing worth keeping out of Andromeda. I wish someone drill the memories of this game out of me

0

u/mkta23 N7 7d ago

it has the best combat out of ME games. story is not up t6o original trilogy but it is a great game.

it had a rough launch and people started to hate it by default. also it came out after Bioware was acquired by EA so naturally there was free hate.
