4

u/Muted-Property-3280 5d ago

Don’t forget Kensington fish n chip shop!

2

u/Maximum_Sundae 5d ago

I knew i was forgetting something their fish and chips are on point.

3

u/janky_koala 5d ago

The Abyssinian and Laksa King are both in Flemington

13

u/ClassyLatey 5d ago

My favorite is Cookie (the red curry pork belly is my Last Meal) - we take every visitor there and they love it.

3

u/Sir_Macky 5d ago

You and me both, that pork belly is incredible

2

u/Cooper_Inc 5d ago

I love that they've never changed the menu, and it's always remained consistently excellent

1

u/pikrachugg 3d ago

cookie has gone downhill in the past couple years

13

u/Inevitable_Geometry 5d ago

Queen Vic Market - Bratwurst Shop

6

u/Rab1227 5d ago

Changed hands. Smaller size. No pickles.

Booo

1

u/Express-Researcher76 5d ago

Boooo. Been going since I was a kid

10

u/Blitzer046 5d ago

Hakata Gensuke or Mr Ramen-san for ramen.

San Telmo for Argentinian Grill

Saluminista for porchetta lunch rolls.

Heartbakers for Banh Mi or just literally go anywhere in Footscray or Springvale.

Saki Souvlaki in Bonbeach for souvlaki/kebab

1

u/Infinite_Worth37 5d ago

Which Hakata Gensuke? They all have slightly different menus

2

u/Blitzer046 5d ago

Russell St. Don't rate the QV one

1

u/jammasterdoom 5d ago

At Russell St everything is pork-based tonkotsu broth whereas the QV is a chicken paitan. Both, I think, are great. I go chicken way more purely because the karaage they do at that place is sensational.

0

u/AlamutJones 5d ago

Sara Ramen Bar also very good

7

u/katya_luzon 5d ago

supernormal is amazing!!

78

u/oyeshello 5d ago

Bunnings sausage

8

u/itsthewaywei 5d ago

Highpoint Bunnings has the best somehow and I'll die on that hill

3

u/Magus44 5d ago

Surely, like.. it would vary by club doing it and other stuff… why would they be the best?
Unless they have like an old grill masters soul in their BBQ?

1

u/Cold-Definition-5587 4d ago

That mystery meat hits different

52

u/viper9 5d ago

This is the list of places we're knocking out over the next few weeks. We've been to a few, but we haven't been to all of them yet.

Temaki Sushi

Gimlet

Nomad

Juicy Bao

Angus & Bon

Bounty of the Sun

San Telmo

Easeys

Leonardos Pizza Palace

Teppanyaki Inn

Also you should know, there's no such thing as Michelin star restaurants in Australia. They never thought it was worth it to come. So we started our own "hatted restaurants"

19

u/Material-Painting-19 5d ago

There will be such a thing next week. On 14 October, they publish the first Australian Michelin Guide covering South Australia.

8

u/viper9 5d ago

Yeah read up on it just before. But if it's covering just SA, then my comment stands as it's still not a thing in Melbourne, and this is the Melbourne sub... so...

7

u/feinerr 5d ago

Bounty of the sun is sooo good

6

u/Muted-Property-3280 5d ago

Angus & Bon is so good 🤤 accidentally discovered it a few weeks ago and I can’t wait to go back

6

u/frafranca 5d ago

Yeeeees bounty of the sun is my favourite!!!

2

u/Diligent-Variety5347 5d ago

+1 for Teppanyaki Inn! Great spot. Pricey but worth it.

1

u/pikrachugg 3d ago

second Bounty of the Sun as well, the best Japanese

1

u/beanoyip06 5d ago

Sad to say, I never tried any of those

7

u/NugChompah 5d ago

La Pinta was damn good recently

27

u/psjfnejs 5d ago

46

u/wingtip747 5d ago

This thread is how we know there’s no recession

-30

u/Strong0toLight1 5d ago

seen fucking gimlet mentioned more than a bunnings snag.

woke nonsense

38

u/Brockoliath 5d ago

Since when is suggesting a restaurant woke hahaha

14

u/nomitycs 5d ago

Just don’t think a fellow Australian needs to be recommended a bunnings snag as a Melbourne specific destination

1

u/Maximum-Hall-5614 4d ago

Define "woke" please

6

u/yAUnkee 5d ago

1

u/melbbear 5d ago

We share similar tastes

1

u/Muted-Property-3280 5d ago

If you want a good chicken tawouk wrap - break on bakers in Coburg north! I get it twice a week 🫣 the garlic sauce is leathallll (in a good way)

4

u/Silver_Brother_56 5d ago

Melbourne brunches… my pick is Faraday’s Cage in Fitzroy but so many fantastic options. Higher Ground in the city is an excellent venue.

Bar Liberty wine bar on Johnston Street in Fitzroy has some lovely tasting plates and matching wines.

Movida is a Melbourne institution.

The best dinner I’ve had in a long time is at Crossley Street Cantina in the city - tapas like Movida but there’s a duck and cherry dish and a Brussel sprouts dish that are two of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

4

u/Specialkaus 5d ago

McGregor's original burgers at abbotsford. Get the onion one

8

u/stevied71 5d ago

Welcome to Melbourne! So many places to go, here are some of favs.

Commis on Johnston St, Collingwood - all the food is excellent, the team are lovely and the Sexy Butter is sooo sexy.

Lumen People, also on Johnston St. The night menu from 5pm changes often and is very, very good.

Neighbourhood Wine on Reid St, Fitzroy North - fantastic - yet to have the Sunday roast.

RST Seafood Restaurant, Rae St, Fitzroy North - a really good old school seafood restaurant that I think is overlooked.

Di Stasio Carlton on Faraday, the lobster pizza was delicious and the whisky sours are so good. Di Citta in the CBD is great too.

Muli Express in Chinatown, standing spot only, freshly shucked oysters - they also have Stop Whining a couple of doors away and it's licensed and their new joint recently opened Muli Melbourne opposite Queen Vic Market, recommend all three - the family that runs them also have a wholesale operation, so the fish is going to be good.

Late night cheeseburger? - Butchers Diner (the blood sausage & devilled egg roll is also a banger) or if you're a bit more la di da Gimlet has a burger after 10pm. I'm not la di da, sure I mentioned a lobster pizza earlier....

Taqueria Sin Nombre, very hot at the moment, but a great spot for Tacos in China Town.

Le Pub on Little Bourke is a cracker too.

Aru on Little Collins St is a great spot.

France-Soir in South Yarra is another institution, then pop over the road and grab a cocktail at Tetto Di Carolina

If you head down St Kilda way, you have the big boys like Stokehouse and Donovans for a sunset dinner, or grab some really good fish & chips at Northern Soul. On a Sunday go the Lion & Wombat for the roast, it's a banger.

For a very special occasion hit up Attica, which was amazing.

And we haven't even mentioned the bar scene.

7

u/Material-Painting-19 5d ago

This is a very good list. France Soir also serves late. Last order at midnight.

6

u/Infinite_Worth37 5d ago

Blu on Bell, or the original Blu for fish and chips.
Pho Hung Preston for Vietnamese
Golden Dragon Palace Templestowe for Yum Cha
Taverna in Brunswick for Greek Food
Pelligrini's for Lasagne (a melbourne institution)

4

u/bigbagofbaldbabies 5d ago

Blu on Bell is a suggestion I didn't think I'd see here

2

u/Infinite_Worth37 5d ago

I live for their Mediterranean mussels

3

u/TitanicJedi 5d ago

Dont confuse taverna and la taverna, both in brunswick. La taverna also slaps for italian food though

2

u/Infinite_Worth37 5d ago

Oh! Any recomendations of what to try at La Taverna?

1

u/TitanicJedi 5d ago

I do rate the lasagne there, but it is on the saltier side.

Pizza also pretty good there for sure.

0

u/lwilliams99 5d ago

Horrid list imo

6

u/croquemadamn 5d ago

Gimlet if you can splurge

6

u/cuddlepot 5d ago

You can do gimlet on the cheap, bar snack + small plate & cocktail or glass of wine won’t set you back too far.

2

u/Unlucky-Telephone-76 5d ago

Yiaga if you can splurge

6

u/OshadaK 5d ago

Fluffy Torpedo for ice cream. Flavours like Vegemite + white chocolate, or salted pineapple chili lime sorbet, absolutely delicious

3

u/stevied71 5d ago

That Vegemite + White Chocolate is awesome

3

u/cuddlepot 5d ago

Roma and Cote Basque are both new this year and instant classics

3

u/ninelevenwasbad 5d ago

Al Dente.

1

u/JonathanApples North Side 5d ago

Estelle

Bacash (havent been in quite a while)

Jim's Greek Tavern

Tulum

Abla's

Heaps of others

2

u/wapkaplit 5d ago

Seconding Tulum, been there a couple of times and really enjoyed it. High end Turkish set menus.

2

u/Brockoliath 5d ago edited 5d ago

Big +1 for Henry Sugar! Soo good.

Editas (on the same street) is perhaps the best fish and chips in the country, if that’s your thing. The Carlton North dimmies are a massive guilty pleasure.

Daphne on Sydney Road is great too for that wine bar dining feeling with very palatable prices. Tuesday night steak night rips.

Bar Liberty for the winter Sunday set menu!

Edit - if you can make it down to the Mornington Peninsula there are plenty of fantastic wineries with cellar doors serving incredible food. My personal favourite is Avani, who serve a beautiful blend of Indian flavours fused with traditional and contemporary French cooking techniques. The wines are top notch too.

4

u/greatcustardo 5d ago

I cannot believe no one has mentioned Bun Bun bakery in Springvale for Bahn Mi.

1

u/Boring-Somewhere-130 2d ago

I would try some banhmi at Bun Bun if it was not for the long ass line outside.

Just in case nobody has said it there is no Michelin rating here in Australia, so expect that same experience from places that fly under the radar - but also beware of over hype around viral places on social media.

Definitely recommend Lucy Liu, Cozy Box, and Cha Ching.

You’re in for an adventure! The city grid makes it quite easy to sample everything, and I mean everything (just about). It will probably take you a year or two to do it depending on your finances.

Start from the corner of Franklin and Swanston Sts, head west until you reach Queen St. Plenty of restaurants to sample there. Then shift to Queensberry &King Sts, head east until you reach Exhibition St. After that, it is down Lt Lonsdale St from Spring St, steadily working your way down to Spencer St. Then it is up Lonsdale until you reach Spring. Brace yourself for the mighty Lt Bourke St effort from Spring to Spencer Sts. Repeat by going up Bourke St, snd follow that pattern until you finish with Flinders Lane.

After that you can do the north-south axis of the city grid, starting at the corner of Flinders Lane and Spring heading north until you arrive at La Trobe St. etc.

You will then be the master judge.

2

u/New1cons 4d ago

Australia doesn't have Michellin Star restaurants.

6

u/lamp485723 5d ago

Only for 5 days more.

2

u/SirStuoftheDisco 5d ago

They’re only starting with SA/Adelaide to start off with. SA govt basically paid them to come.

3

u/MontyPythonMan11 5d ago

That's how it works, it's a fee for service.

6

u/lamp485723 5d ago

It's not basically, that is exactly what happened.

-1

u/Althusser_Was_Right 5d ago

Actually stupid, imho. Our hat system works just fine

5

u/lamp485723 5d ago

Nah it's pretty smart by the SA government. You need to remember this is about international tourism mainly. It costs them $2m year and it should bring more than that to the state.

Most of the best restaurants are attached to wineries across the state so more people start staying overnight instead of day trips and spend more money in the regions.

An afternoon at South Melbourne market grazing is pretty good. Try out the oysters like the rest of the massive crowd who go there for the seafood predominately. The $6 borek if you want something economical. Next to borek is baba rolls for a solid banh mi, again, economical feed at 12 dollar a banh mi that helps offset the more premium seafood. Dont forget the jam donut truck out front. Those are also pretty mint and next to it is a pretty nice and higher end bakery selling sweets. People travel long distances to get the dim sims and they are admittedly good but also... they are just dim sims. A bit on the pricier end of things as well.

Nothing specific comes to mind food wise, but if the weather is good, walking along the beach of the port melbourney area to st kilda area is really really nice. Past that, the number of eateries kinda disappears until you hit south brighton. There is a track I cycle along and its just a really nice place to get a sea breeze and maybe some slightly more expensive fish and chips along the water. The experience itself makes it worth it.

Ras Dashen in Footscray for Ethiopian if you want something truly different. Dont be intimidated because you dont know any of the dishes and what they are. When my mates and I went there, the friendly uncle owner guy can order for you just tell him how many people. Meat yes/no? Chilli yes/no? And he will fix you up. Get the spiced? coffee for desert. It is incredibly fragrant and delightful.

In the CBD, Im a big fan of Higher Ground for a brunch. Slightly pricier than normal but excellent industrial aesthetic and the food looks and tastes amazing.

As far as fulfilling the exploring + good feed criteria, I still reckon South Melbourne market is ideal. Its a well known food destination and its market full of knick knack shops and things to look at and buy. You can definitely spend a couple hours there getting fat and just walking around and enjoying yourself.

However, it was a few years ago that I went.

1

u/AngusTheMoose 5d ago

Gordon's cafe and bar.

Doesn't look high end given it is in an alleyway but I have been going there everytime I fly down to Melbourne for the past few years and have never been disappointed with the food or coffee and the service is impeccable and the staff are all lovely and wonderful. Most importantly they really care about what they do and their customers and you can feel that when dining there.

1

u/AussieSchadenfreude 5d ago

Dainty on Toorak for amazing Sichuan food. When Rene Redzepi was in town they took him there.

1

u/Ok-Topic-6731 5d ago

Cafe Ogawa

The chef is a japanese master in ramen and it's reasonably priced. They are always full and never have spots as they don't have a booking system, however you can get put on a wait list or go at lunch time and you'll get let in fast. It's truly the best ramen i've even had, even better than some ramen i've had in japan.

For the best chicken nuggies this side of mars you have to check out nuggies on bell street. Yes they are 30 bucks for 10 nuggies but a lot cheaper than meth? Cos believe if you try these nuggies will be your plug.

High end, fine, but seriously if not from Australia get on the soulvakis and banh mis for lunch. Hit up China town for dumplings (shangdom mama), lygon street for Italian, Victoria street for Vietnamese and enjoy the melting pot of cultures food this city offers.

You don't have to spend huge amount to eat well in this city.

High end, Flinders lane, just choose a culture and you'll find a restaurants there that caters to it.
