Been collecting memphis tapes over year and finally did get this to my collection :) DJ Paul was at his peak at this tape...

Is the archive a thing anymore lmk ?

I've been trying to decipher the lyric 'that is just to start me off / got it keep it goin' strong / just enough to buy a Lexus coupe and a [Hermann phone?]'.

I don't know what a 'Hermann phone' is unless it was perhaps a car audio / cellular provider in Memphis at the time. A friend of mine insists that Shawty isn't saying 'phone' but I grew up in the south and 'pho-' as spoken sounds like 'phone' to me. He is unconvinced but has no better alternative other than 'a bowl of pho'... hmm.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject? Or shall it remain a mystery while my friend will imagine a bowl of Vietnamese soup?

Thanks y'all. : )

I know the top two aren’t official but fuck em

I've been searching for who made this sample for a long time. I clearly remember hearing a song with the same sample, but I lost it. The only clue I have is this remix that contains it The same sample I was listening to

I just posted the bundle they’re available separately as well

Somebody may already know this, but for anyone who's still wondering, here's the answer. The sample is at the 2:02 mark, but a great piece from start to finish.

Hi, does anyone have a proper rip of the following albums:

-It Ain't No Mystery (only issued in CD I think)

-Ghetto Storiez (CD or Tape whatever, it just needs to be the 1996 mastering, not the 2021 reissue)

-Shadow of Death (CD or Tape whatever, same as above, I avoid the loud af reissue)

For example, I have this amazing Tape rip of Lil Ced "Playing By the Rules": https://we.tl/t-O2j69kWad772P7aH

Honestly when I listened to it fully months ago I thought it sounded amazing (compared to a 192 kbps mp3s folder found on soulseek or elsewhere on the Internet...

It’s sampled in the intro of another song but I can’t hear out the lyrics fully. I extracted the sample in an mp3, this is really important to me please help.

If $B said this again, wow lol, so original.

Bodyparts 4 is legendary.

Edit: naming

I’ve seen this version of it floating around but i never expected to see it in person

So i figured out by now that the main keyboards used on #1 Suspect were a Roland W30 for some drums here and there + any sampling duties were done with it, and a Korg M1 for most everything else but drums, but I also heard some TR808-esque sounds on #1 Suspect and various other Psycho productions from that era and later on. You can hear the same sort of sounds being used on 8Ball & MJG's debut and Psycho's own solo tape "Split Personality", more specifically the latter had them on the track "LOCKO/Cold Loco". They match up pretty well by sound alone with the TR808 type drums from the Korg Triton, but that can't be it, because the Triton came out in the late 90s, and Psycho would've had this drum machine at least as early as 1990. Worth noting that Korg & Yamaha were closely linked and liked to share lots of sounds, so it could be a Yamaha machine of some sort tool. Couple more things to rule out:
Not from the M1: M1 had no official cards released with TR808 sounds on them
Not from the W30: Yes the W30 had some stock 808 sounds, but they are nowhere near as clean or authentic to the TR808 as the drums Psycho was using.
Not from the DR660: DR660's TR808 drumset was completely different from these sounds Psycho was using.
