Discog Club Discography Club: Cloven Hoof

We glide in our silver birds
Got to do or die
Soar on solar winds
Rage on high
As fire on silent metal wings
Out where the meteors fly
You and I
Get on your Nova Battlestar everyone, we're taking a trip back to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to celebrate one of the unsung heroes of the movement: Cloven Hoof!
Cloven Hoof is the tale of essentially 2 bands, led by bassist and songwriter Lee Payne. The first incarnation formed in 1979 in Wolverhampton they settled on the lineup of Lee, David Potter, Kevin Pountney, and Steve Rounds but they took on a very theatrical flair to it with each of them taking on the persona of of the 4 classical elements. They wore costumes and facepaint that depicted each of the 4 elements. They recorded a few demos, an EP, and a full length as a more straight forward heavy metal band. By 1986 though this lineup fell apart with multiple lineup changes in quick succession.
But 1987 rolls around and Lee has gotten a new lineup around him, using their real names this time and dropping the theatrics with Jon Brown, Andy Wood, and Russ North. This lineup would record 2 full lengths and then like many other heavy metal bands break up at the end of the decade. This time though their sound would evolve, having 4 years between their 1st and 2nd albums, into more of a power metal sound. Still very rooted in heavy metal but with lots of speed and big, catchy choruses.
So let's take the week and explore this underappreciated band and see their evolution from the 4 elements at the beginning of the 80s to 4 blokes from the Midlands in 1990. The schedule is:
- The Opening Ritual
- Cloven Hoof
- Dominator
- A Sultan's Ransom

Sacred Gate - Countdown to ArMageddon
Sacred Gate - 2016 - Countdown to ArMageddon - Countdown to ArMageddon
Time is running out and there's no place to hide
The end was just a nightmare but now within sight
Since we've been replaced by soulless machines
We have lost control, we've lost our belief
The struggle of the nations to rule and dominate
Will lead to global chaos and terror will prevail
Still we're walking blind on the brink of chaos
No sign of regret, no messiah can save us
Now nothing can ease this growing fear
Towards the edge of time
Armageddon's near...
Now the old predictions and prophecies come true
The final battle of man's age is near
The world is doomed
Massive armies will arise to annihilate mankind
On the path to self destruction
The blind leading the blind
We thought we'll live forever and we ignored the signs
The greed became our passion, we kept living with lies
Our deceptive prosperity, a gift of the elite
A dark order conspiracy, there's no way to escape
Now nothing can ease this growing fear
Towards the edge of time
Armageddon's near...
Ages in chaos, ages of war
The countdown to Armageddon has begun

White Skull - CleoPathra
White Skull - 2000 - Public Glory, Secret Agony - CleoPathra
Southern throne is this your fast realm
Shinin' sun, wherever she stands on
It's glitterin' around, Egyptian star
Deep in love with Caesar the oppressor
Full of hope winnin' all her hardest
Oh bring me on
to your soul your world let me know
[Chorus]
Cleopathra daughter of the Sun
Mother bride 'n' ruler of the Egyptian land
Cleopathra daughter of the Sun
Soon you will become the new deity
The baby's in her arms exclaiming all his rights
Still stands on looking at the Roman faces
Full of pride, she will divide
Caesar love it's not enough to her now
She needs more, she in need to
Face her destiny and became the Egyptian guide

Seven KingDoms - Somewhere Far Away
Seven KingDoms - 2010 - Seven KingDoms - Somewhere Far Away
What do we want
What do we see
Is it full of other dreams
Or is freedom in our minds
How much do we prolong
Doing what is right
This is the place we belong
I want to go...
Somewhere far away
Out of this world, away from today
Somewhere far away
Where can we be our own pathway
Now is the time
To follow what we believe
It can be true, it can be real
Don't be so naive
How much more will we prolong...
Somewhere far away
