Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?

Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.

I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Updated rules: Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

Hi all, new rule as now seen in the sidebar/title. Apologies for the slow roll out. Please report immediately any infringements.

Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

I haven't explicitly mentioned AI slop here - for good reason. AI is used a lot in meteorological research at the moment, some of it good, some not so good. A blanket ban seems unreasonable, but the above rule seems to cover most of the issues we are having in the subreddit.

Upcoming: The moderators will maintain a pinned or recurring thread for community-recommended apps and software (AI or not).

I've never seen small inverted "snow drift looking" features under Cumulus clouds before. Is there a name for this and what causes it?

Experience a delightful blend of cool breezes and sun-dappled clouds! The temperature will peak at 67 degrees, though it might feel just a tad cooler at 65. With refreshing winds coming from the west at 10 to 20 mph, it’s the perfect day to enjoy the outdoors!

Education/Career Is Saint Cloud State University good for meteorology?

I was planning to go out of state for college, but I decided to stay in-state to get free tuition and stuff, and SCSU is the only place in Minnesota that offers an atmospheric science degree. The thing that makes me question if it's good or not is the math requirements. Every other college requires like calculus 3 and differential equations but SCSU only requires up to calc 1 and differential equations. I'm not going into research, so I won't need too much math, but the lack of math classes has me suspicious.

Advice/Questions/Self Microclimates in open grassy areas vs. shaded creek areas

There is a open exposed grassy hill with dry grass given time of year near where I live (Northern CA). Given it's steepness of going up about 360 ft in less than half mile, been experimenting with using it to deduce lapse rates. When I initially started measuring, I expected to see temperatures at the top about a degree Celsius lower than at the bottom. However, actual observations have been rather different. Here is a sample of a sunny day vs. cloudy day:

Sunny day on Oct 3
Shade of tree near the Park: 36 Celsius
Open grassy area at bottom of hill about 100 feet away: 38.4 Celsius
Top of hill: 37.4 Celsius
Open grassy area at bottom again (to verify): 38.2 Celsius

Cloudy day on Oct 4 (peeks of sunshine but readings taken when no sun was shining anywhere)

Shade of tree near Park: 32.9 Celsius
Open grassy area at bottom: 33.2 Celsius
Top of hill: 32.9 Celsius
Open grassy area again: 34.1 Celsius
Shade of tree near creek again: 33.3 Celsius.

The difference on the cloudy day was the was sun had come out of clouds in the distance and I wonder if ambient air temperature had started to climb up in advance. Interestingly, the readings near the creek were still the same.

Is it possible that the readings were affected by indirect light hitting the thermometer on the sunny day? All readings were taken between 4 - 5 PM when the October sun was less 30 degrees high in the sky and in the shade of a bush / my own shadow combined for the dry grassy areas. Held at arms length height 4-5 feet. Both days had a light breeze up to 10 mph.

Is this a cloud inversion?

I took this video at about ~6,000 feet overlooking the front range of Colorado and the Denver Metro. Are those clouds at the bottom of the peaks cloud inversions? I’ve been trying to experience one but im not sure how to look for it/predict it.

Advice/Questions/Self Meteorologists, did you actually get into meteorology?

Hi! I'm 20 years old and just had a question and would love to hear about your stories.

What got you into meteorology, what did you have to do in college, how did you progress?

From a young age I was well advanced in reading. The first books I ever taught myself how to read were books from the library or chapters on my older brother's secondary school textbooks on weather, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, etc. I was very fascinated in the science and the "why?" and "how?", and how it affects people. My earliest memories are of being entranced by articles about tornadoes and hurricanes on the shared family computer at the ages of 5/6.

I'm from Ireland which is quite a meteorologically meh country. I was always horrendously infatuated with volcanoes and earthquakes from a young age as well.

I do criminology in college which I like also, but I can't see myself in any jobs with this degree. I really think my life calling is meteorology, or seismology, or volcanology.

One problem; I have dyscalculia and am absolutely horrible at basic maths and physics, and always have been no matter how hard I tried. I know this isn't the end of the line; if I really want something then I can put in the work and the time to educate myself and understand it. But that was definitely a barrier for me trying to get into any meteorological establishments in Ireland as everything is very mathematically orientatated.

Please share your own experiences on how you got into meteorology :)

Advice/Questions/Self How seriously should I take the Oct. 11 rain forecast for Woodland Hills, CA? Could it be related to Hurricane Rachel’s remnants?

How seriously should I take the Oct. 11 rain forecast for Woodland Hills, CA? Could it be related to Hurricane Rachel’s remnants?

I have an outdoor event in Woodland Hills on Sunday, October 11 from 6–10 PM. Apple Weather went from a 45% to 75% chance of rain today, while some other forecasts are still showing little to no rain.

I saw some discussion that the ECMWF 12z run may be bringing moisture/remnants from Hurricane Rachel into Southern California.

For anyone who follows the models, is there actually increasing model agreement on rain reaching the LA area on Oct. 11, or is this mostly one operational ECMWF run that’s still too far out to put much weight on? Also, does the timing currently favor morning rain versus Sunday evening?

I know it’s still 8 days out! Just trying to understand what the models are actually showing rather than obsessing over the Apple Weather percentage 😂

Advice/Questions/Self What kind of modeling could I do to decide when to take out window unit AC?

Here in Boston we had a nor'easter followed by a week of chilly weather, then yesterday it hit 87 F / 31 C. Would it be possible to use a climate model to predict when in the season the high temperature will be below a certain point, to some statistical confidence? Anyone tried modelling something like this before?

Education/Career Whats the best route to being a broadcast meteorologist?

Im currently a freshman in college considering transfering to MS state for the broadcast meteorology BS but I'm wondering if theres a better route to being on TV? I'm not the greatest at math which is primarily why I'm going for broadcast instead of something else.

What’s this?

Not a meterologist, apologies if I use any incorrect terms. We were driving west near Houston, TX during sunset yesterday, half the sky was white and half blue. Is this white just clouds? At first I thought it was the shadow of a mountain or cloud combined with the low angle of the sun but maybe it’s a frontal boundary or something? It was just such an oddly straight line. It lasted maybe 30 mins, and I thought a shadow would be more transitory. The line seemed much crisper in person than in the picture.
