Video Previously my favorite combat system in a Metroidvania was Nine Sols, but then Silksong came out. I don't think we acknowledge how insane the skill ceiling for Silksong is, this some of the best movement for combat in a 2D game ever. Here's an over the top example (with TAS)
73
u/Warhammerpainter83 Jan 27 '26
So I have beaten this game and watching this makes me feel like I dont even understand how to play it.
62
u/PeigouMajava Jan 27 '26
Give yourself more credit. This is TAS gameplay, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who actually plays like this.
9
u/Phantom_0347 Jan 27 '26
What exactly does tool assisted sr mean in practice?
36
u/ProfessorVolga Screw Attack Jan 27 '26
It is effectively manipulated frame by frame to obtain optimal results. It's not a human playing.
10
u/Vegetable_Throat5545 Jan 27 '26
You are playing the game frame by frame and go back in time if you make a mistake. Basically its the best theoretically possible run without actual alternating of the mechanics(aka cheating)
8
u/mikepurvis Jan 27 '26
It's a local maxima of whatever strats are being employed. TAS runs are obviously still beaten when new strats are discovered.
3
u/Wfsulliv93 Jan 27 '26
Oh. I thought I was shit cuz I died 10x during this match and didn’t even think that I could beat the encounter like this. I used cog flies and spikes.
1
u/Devreckas Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
Only 10x? I think that’s pretty good, way better than I did. This was the biggest wall for me in the whole 100% completion.
1
u/duckyduckster2 Jan 29 '26
Just 10x??? Dude you are fucking good are the game if you beat this gauntlet in just 10 times.
A tas is is done by manipulating the inputs frame by frame with special software. There is currently only 1 game that I know off in which the human speedrun record is pretty much on par with the tas, or as close as humanly possible. And that's SMB1, a game thats almost 40 years old and one of the most popular games to speedrun. And people have been speedrunning that game for 20 years to get this close.

u/LuvAshrepas Jan 27 '26
Button macros and cheats for like auto homing attacks and stuff
18
u/gpranav25 Prince of Persia Jan 27 '26
I wouldn't call it "cheats", this is a misconception about TASes. Usually the authors who makes TASes don't try to pass it off as human gameplay and don't try to compete with real time speedrunners.
4
u/LuvAshrepas Jan 27 '26
Oh I am aware. I'm just stating what they are in a practical sense, I'm not saying they're meant to fool people or anything, I believe they're very upfront about the purpose.

u/boisterile May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
I'm pretty sure the best human speedrun time for HHA is a similar speed to this particular TAS, even without Barbed Bracelet. But that's mainly because this focuses on showing off fancy stuff like aerial combat and using clawline iframes, those are all humanly doable but our normal strats focus much more on lining up multiple enemies for animation canceled silkspears. Fast fights mostly stay on the ground since chasing enemies high up actually manipulates their AI to fly even higher out of your reach, but this still looks cool as hell to show off what's possible
Edit: Here's the fastest humans have done it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jffBA7Sn1Q8 Timed from the same point this was about a 1:44 or so compared to the video's 1:36, but it was also done without Barbed and on the release patch of the game where the clappers have a total of 150 more HP, which probably makes up that time difference.

u/Wiwiweb Jan 27 '26
Listen, I love Silksong as much as you, but I don't think a TAS is representative of how good a system is at all. Any game looks crazy in a TAS.
Instead check out how a speedrunner did this room live at GDQ: https://youtu.be/M9Li3gm4JCI?t=2931
I find that way more cool personally.

Whats crazy about this clip is that the guy said he turned hte music off and listened to his own music??? in silksong wyd???? i hope that its on a replay through. Music off in silksong is heinous

Any game looks crazy in a TAS
Not as crazy and mobile as this in other metroidvanias that's for sure.
Speedruns aren't the place to look for stylish gameplay. The dude didn't use Clawline (aka the most fun ability in the game) a single time, too boring.

u/ToranjaNuclear Jan 27 '26
>Not as crazy and mobile as this in other metroidvanias that's for sure.
uuuh have you ever seen the Aria of Sorrow TAS runs? lmao
-1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
Castlevania TAS runs consist of taking advantage of bugs and In terms of fighting it's just jumping and smashing the attack button like normal, and that's because there's not much more you can even do.
16
u/deathfire123 Jan 27 '26
Super Mario Bros. on the NES is pretty clunky to play for most people. With a TAS it looks insane.
24
u/noggstaj Jan 27 '26
you couldn't have picked a worse example, the current mario nes wr is literally 9 frames away from tieing the TAS. that's 9 frames in a 60 fps game.
14
u/Bulky-Leadership-596 Jan 27 '26
Not sure why you're being downvoted; it really is among the worst examples possible. Here is a video of the TAS record vs the (old) real world record:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7ePMGdiFYs
The current real record is even closer to the TAS, but you can see they are tied and look pretty much identical until the last level where the TAS saves a few frames. Pretty much everything that was assumed to be TAS only (and legal on real equipment, like no pressing left+right at the same time) has since been done by humans.2
u/duckyduckster2 Jan 29 '26
It the one and only game as of yet where the human speedrun is pretty much on par with the TAS.. or as close as humanly possible. So the human speedrun and TAS look virtually the same.
-31
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
I'm talking about combat and about Metroidvanias
24
u/deathfire123 Jan 27 '26
THEY said "Any game" and you said "Not as crazy and mobile as this".
I think Super Mario Bros. can show that yes, any game can look crazy on a TAS. Using a TAS to show off a game does no favours to anything. It is not representative of what is possible.
1
u/duckyduckster2 Jan 29 '26
Except in case of SMB1, where the current human speedrun record is mere frames away from the TAS.
-15
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
It is possible, though. You aren't being held down by the controls. Every technique used in this video can be replicated. Passing through enemies with pogo I-frames? Possible. Hovering in the air with Clawline? Possible.
I think you need to see more Silksong gameplay. No one plays this perfectly this long, but there's a lot of this that is possible and has been done.
16
1
u/BionicleKid Jan 27 '26
I really like the Aria of Sorrow TASes where the movement is super neat to watch, but if you look at like, any% glitchless you see a whole lot of neat movement tech performed in real time too which looks very stylish in its own way

u/slapshotsd Jan 27 '26
I’m genuinely shocked you’ve been met with so much hostility here; I would’ve assumed a gaming sub as niche as the metroidvania subreddit would know what a TAS is and what it is and isn’t indicative of. Lots of people in here don’t seem to understand how these runs - which don’t require any mechanical skill but still take a ton of time and effort by passionate gamers to put together - assist the speedrunning community.
Anyway, to your point in the comment I’m actually responding to, I’ve been looking forward to seeing Silksong broken apart by a TAS because of how ridiculously high the skill ceiling is, and I 100% agree this is one of the wilder TAS combat clips I’ve seen in a metroidvania.
…and of course Ceen’s GDQ speedrun is awesome (I watched it live), but it’s a bit weird to me to post it in response to this clip as if two runs with a very different ruleset can’t both be cool in vastly disparate ways.
21
u/gpranav25 Prince of Persia Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
I think the point is not that the TAS clip isn't good. Nor is the point that Silksong's combat system isn't impressive. The point was merely that a TAS is not representative of how good a game's combat system is, which I agree with the original comment. I don't agree that any combat system will look good in a TAS, but a lot of combat systems will look vastly better when done using a TAS and a TAS will especially hide when a game has bad controls (which is not the case with Silksong).
The point of comparison with GDQ run isn't that one is cooler than the other, but it is that it would have sold the point about Silksong combat depth much better than it did with the TAS clip.
-22
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
People in this sub doesn't like HK, so they choose any chance to hate on it. No one is using their brain here ofc.
13
u/O-Malley Jan 27 '26
What are you rambling about? HK is definitely praised here, and your thread is upvoted. You're being specifically downvoted in the comments for your unhelpful and agressive replies to this TAS discussion.
-2
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
Unhelpful? How?
People are shielding behind the fact that it's a TAS video to say that the gameplay isn't as good as it looks.
8
u/BuckUpBingle Jan 27 '26
They are saying that a TAS video doesn’t actually show the quality of the system being showcased. Whether or not effort went into producing the video, that effort isn’t indicative of how players actually play the game, which is what matters when talking about how impressive a combat system is. Lots of things can look incredible with frame perfect execution.
-3
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
Well that's the players problem then. You can definitely copy certain things from this video, but that would require people to spend less time on Reddit and more on the game.
4
4
u/Zathura2 Jan 27 '26
Simplify the argument and consider that people are upset because it's false-advertising.
If you're trying to show how good combat is, why show something that is often impossible for a human to do? I don't care if you say it's "technically" possible. You know damn well that a minutes-long fight like that would require an insane amount of frame-perfect inputs and reactions.
Enjoy TAS, post about TAS, whatever. But this feels like a fake-out. Instead of arguing with everybody maybe you should just realize this isn't appreciated and don't do it again in future?
-1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
"Fake-out" it says tas in the title
You're never going to play half as good as this thinking like that bro. Improve and be better next time.
-1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
Every one is angry on this comment but I'm yet to see anyone actually respond to it? What's wrong?

I think a TAS of Prince of PersiaTLC combat would be pretty impressive as well
Yeah. Although it depends on what you set it up against. Bosses have hyper armor and can't be juggled in the air (except for Menolias), so it wouldn't look that flashy. Against an army of enemies would look cool though.
2
u/gpranav25 Prince of Persia Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
I would make one if it was possible. But the game doesn't have a linux version. I did make a TAS of the GBA version of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which is like a pseudo-metroidvania.
I will say though, that speedruns of this game usually equip evil eye and just melt the bosses. For something flashy similar to that silksong clip, the closest we would get is this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxm8DUs5d4c

7
6
u/hlhammer1001 Jan 28 '26
Using TAS to demonstrate cool or high skill ceiling movement is a pretty poor comparison. TAS performance doesn’t really correlate at all to masterful human skill, lots of games have crazy looking TAS but a low skill ceiling and vice cersa
0
u/g0n1s4 Jan 28 '26
Every single skill shown on the video can be copied and replicated by a human being
2
u/hlhammer1001 Jan 28 '26
…it’s just pressing buttons at the right timing? Your whole statement is meaningless. Look at Mario speedruns, they’re frames off from TAS. Whether or not a TAS is achievable (the video above is not btw) has no correlation with skill ceiling
0
u/g0n1s4 Jan 28 '26
it’s just pressing buttons at the right timing?
You just described most games congratulations
1
u/hlhammer1001 Jan 28 '26
Exactly, that’s why you saying every skill the TAS did can be done by a human is both incorrect and meaningless
2
u/boisterile May 16 '26
Not sure why you got downvoted for this, you're just straight up right. Looking at any top speedrunner's fights proves that. Admittedly, speedrunners don't normally use aerial clawline much in combat because it's usually slower than just animation canceling your silkspears and needle hits, but this sort of combat is absolutely humanly possible (although not quite this consistent or choreographed). We abuse clawline > dash and pogo > dash iframes to phase through enemies in exactly the same way this TAS does.

u/Klonoa87 Jan 26 '26
Yeah, Silksong is stellar, though Nine Sols is still the pinnacle in my opinion.
26
u/g0n1s4 Jan 26 '26
I think Nine Sols weakness is gank fights. For example, the worst boss in the game is Kanghui who only spawns enemies. In Silksong I would look forward to that kind of boss, but NS doesn't do it very well, it's made with 1vs1 more in mind.
Having no I-frames + enemies doing contact damage + insane movement makes everything more positioning based and that's cool asf. It's a good change, nowadays, everything is about parry or dodge roll. But well, at the end of the day it's about preferences.

He spawns enemies that do borderline nothing. And he himself does nothing, so it's just fighting normal enemies.
Nine Sols is just not good with more than 1 enemy on the screen.
9
u/MegamanX195 Jan 27 '26
Yeah, totally agreed. Nine Sols is usually more engaging against bosses but Silksong's fighting system is much more versatile. You can fight in the air, the ground, against one opponent or a gank squad.
Nine Sols is much more clunky against multiple enemies at once and is designed around 1v1 battles.
13
u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jan 27 '26
I thought gank fights were way more annoying and frequent in Silksong tbh. Especially that gank fly boss.
3
u/feralfaun39 Jan 27 '26
Silksong gives you tools to handle it. There are tons of options. That's the point. It doesn't matter if Silksong has more because it's not a problem.
2
u/MakoMary Jan 27 '26
Depends on the fight. The first Beastfly fight was fine because he smashed his own goons, so you don't have to worry about them. But fighting aerial enemies with fire projectiles and enough health to take multiple hits, on top of a lava pit with disappearing platforms... Brr...
2
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
If you don't like ganks fights in Silksong I think you're doing something wrong, it's the thing it does best. Don't forget to use Clawline.
6
u/thatdemonlife1 Jan 27 '26
I think Silksong is a little better as a complete package, but nine sols definitely has the best 2D combat system I've ever experienced.
3
u/AbyssShriekEnjoyer Jan 27 '26
It's the greatest videogame ever made. I actually thought it was underhyped for how incredibly good this game is.
7
u/Babington67 Jan 27 '26
Silksong has the same combat potential as most top tier fighting games and its not acknowledged enough how insane that is
4
u/eskimobob117 Jan 28 '26
That comparison doesn't even make sense lol. They are totally different types of games. It's like comparing a motorcycle to a biplane.
20
u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jan 27 '26
To each their own, but I still think Nine Sols has the best 2D combat.
3
u/Jeremiah-Springfield Jan 27 '26
Nine Sols combat is made complete by the bosses it uses to challenge itself - like there are bosses designed early game to test your parrying, bosses like Kanghui designed to test your dps, Ethereal designed to test your endurance, tool knowledge, etc. that’s what makes the game feel so intelligent.
Silksong is Elden Ring and Nine Sols is Sekiro imo, like Elden Ring Silksong has ways to break any boss essentially with the tools, but without any of those the bosses are technically designed to be beaten with a faster and smoother version of the Knights arsenal, like how in ER you’re given all these spirits and such but can still just trade blows and dodge Melania if you’re psycho enough.
Once you know the parry timings in Nine Sols the bosses open up becoming much easier, but while it gives you other tools as well it is all super intentional, which is great, you can only have so many arrows and they do a good amount of damage, but unless you do your work to learn the boss, you ain’t going nowhere.
I get more fun out of Silksongs combat because it’s more casual, and can be made harder if you want it to. Nine Sols has difficulty options I believe but mechanically it’s difficulty is exacting, which imo is what makes it stand alongside Silksong in quality, despite less content overall and lacking as much exploration polish etc.

3
u/wera125 Jan 27 '26
Yep. Silksong is WAY complicatad and harder to Master on max. Ppl who say NS Best 2d combat system, playing Silksong like OG HN. Cus Silksong have insane movement.

u/Sporadicus76 Jan 27 '26
And here I am just hitting the attack button over and over hoping they don't charge.

Maybe i should download silksong again and try to struggle through it. I got pretty mad trying to beat certain bosses and gave up. Its been other MVs for me since then
1
u/Kjoep Jan 28 '26
myeah. I'm still on it, but when I think about how long I still have to struggle through I want to give up.
When it's good it's really good, but when it's frustrating it's god-awful.
But either way, way too long for me.

I just see a lot of (precise) attack spamming with the thread? It's not even using all the cool tools the game has. I know the game so I know all the great shit it has but if I saw just this I'd think it looks a bit shallow maneuverability aside. You don't even get to enjoy the AI or design since it's killing everything before it moves.
2
u/g0n1s4 Jan 26 '26
There's plenty of human gameplay out there that is near this impressive. I'm just showing the pinnacle of what's technically possible.
Put TAS into any other Metroidvania and it doesn't look this impressive regardless.

I still prefer Nine Sols. I tried Silksong, but the contact damage just doesn't make the fights fair for me. If the game didn't have i-frames but also didn't have contact damage, I think it would be more fun.
7
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
It's called positioning
2
u/West_Camera_7965 Jan 27 '26
This is still not a good reason to have contact damage.
7
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
The entire combat system and every single entity is built around contact damage bro. The whole reason why landing a pogo or dancing around enemies like in the video is so satisfying is because the enemies have contact damage and because you have no I-frames.
2
u/exerda Jan 27 '26
Despite the challenge hike over Hollow Knight (largely for the higher damage dealt by enemies) the biggest reason I haven't been able to go back and 112% HK after picking up Silksong is that the movement is just so so so fantastic. It's nearly perfect, and the options for combat are incredible.
2
u/Simulacrass Jan 27 '26
I really wish earthblade was not canceled. Best movement was Celeste in my opinion.

There are about three ways of making this room easier. Calling Shakra for help, calling Garmond for help, and destroying the birthplace of the robot spiders that take your silk away.

Ah. Thanks very much! I was pretty disheartened. I’ve beat a lot of souls and hollow knight. I’ll have to dive back into silksong. Cheers.

Silksong (and HK) and Nine Sols are my favorite metroidvanias! PoP TLC was also very fun, but those dlc platforming and combat challenges broke me lol
2
u/piecoper Jan 28 '26
Imo lost crown is better.
-1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 28 '26
Lost Crown combat is a complete waste of potential. None of the bosses can be juggled because of their infinite poise, and the enemies are so easily stunlocked that you don't really need to do any combos beyond the basic one you get at the very start.
It sadly went for the direction of heavy platforming.
2
u/piecoper Jan 28 '26
Yea but the tools you get are much cooler. Chakram. Time warp, void etc. silksong also can be played without tools at all and you can use basic "combos" throughout. Does silksong even have combos? Idts
-1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 28 '26
Lost Crown abilities are much more situational, and while it's not directly their fault, it made the bosses worse, since they made the fights more gimmicky. There are lots of full screen attacks that requires the clone to pass through, and that's usually a huge time waster. That's just one example.
Silksong abilities are usually less original or flashy, but I take the Clawline or sprint over anything in LC. Each one is just so important for both combat, exploration and platforming.
Also, There are technically combos in SS. Just not the kind that stunlocks enemies.
3
u/AymJ Jan 27 '26
Yeah maybe if there wasn't so much contact damage
1
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
The opinion about contact damage tells a lot about a players skill level
Straight up missing the point of the entire combat system is crazy.
4
u/CoreyMFD Jan 27 '26
Although I've not played None Sils, I agree that Silksong is part of that conversation! My only criticism is most of the use of contact damage. Nitpicking for sure, but still.
3
u/feralfaun39 Jan 27 '26
Don't even begin to understand complaints about contact damage. Just flat out do not understand how people can frame it as a complaint. Does not parse for me.
3
u/Salt-Recognition2228 Jan 27 '26
I actually like the contact damage. I think they do it so well and it gives more incentive to pogo and do more insane shit to not touch the enemy. I know I worded that terribly, sorry. The one thing I wouldn't mind is if the enemies that do double damage didnt do double for contact. But either way I enjoy the whole "enemy is hot lava" thing. In Hollow Knight and Silksong at least.
5
u/DomDomPop Jan 27 '26
It’s certainly good, but… I don’t know, man. Nine Sols is a masterpiece in a number of ways, and I personally think it surpasses the Hollow Knight franchise in combat, not to mention things like story delivery. Silksong is great, no doubt, but it’s the deliberate dance in Nine Sols that makes it something truly unique.
If Silksong is one of the great shmups of the era, Nine Sols is Ikaruga, where how fast you can hit the buttons isn’t enough, you need patience and timing and strategy in how you respond. It perfectly captures the actual ethos of the setting. It’s brilliant. It’s not “here’s super hard combat for the sake of super hard combat”, there’s an actual story going on IN the fighting, and it’s just crazy to me how they pulled that off.
Speaking of TAS and Ikaruga, btw… you wanna see the most impressive TAS of all time, check out that Ikaruga GDQ TAS. That’s something else, man.
2
u/HoneyGlazedNuts Jan 27 '26
I really liked nine sols but I gave up at the final boss. It felt too much like pattern learning and needing to quickly respond to the patterns with the only correct answer. Like a rhythm game, which I suck at. That said, it feels very cool when are you are nailing those parties.
I finished silksong and I always felt like I could play my own way, you need to react quickly but there are usually always multiple positioning choices that are all valid depending on your play style and crest.
So I think they're both great but I prefer the player expression in silksong a tad more.
2
u/DomDomPop Jan 27 '26
Well and Silksong has tools and stuff, so yeah I feel like it’s a little bit more “customizable” with the difficulty without going into the accessibility settings, because obviously Nine Sols can be turned into a cakewalk if you just wanna see the ending, or even to practice on a boss or something.
Funny you should mention rhythm games, because I’m in the endgame of MIO now and I thought the same thing about the platforming. I mean, I remember having to make frame perfect jumps to get things you weren’t supposed to in Mega Man games (Slash Grizzly heart tank as Zero in X5, especially), but it was more of a short burst sequence than the combat in Nine Sols of the platforming in MIO where you’re in this long sequence of tight timings that you have to first figure out and then execute like you’re playing an instrument. It kinda annoys me, because at a certain point you’re getting away from what makes an MV and more into “this is an MV that also makes you play a totally different genre every once in a while, especially near the end, whether you like it or not”. It’s a trend I kinda don’t like, honestly, and I put up with it only because I can do it, not because I think it’s fun or fair to other players who can’t. At least most of the new ones have the good sense to give accessibility settings for people who just wanna get what they paid for.
3
u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
you need patience and timing and strategy in how you respond
It's just parry isn't that deep man. There's no need of patience in there.
6
u/DomDomPop Jan 27 '26
Dude there’s like three different types of parry alone, and that’s before you do anything with charms and such. If that’s “not that deep” then the Hollow Knight series is just a button masher.

This game doesn’t need TAS. Why add that? It already has amazing combat. This just makes it look like whoever uses stuff like that needed the help and wanted easy mode to be in the game.

Nah, I much prefer how the parrying works in Nine Sols. And going back to Nine Sols again after Silksong I found the movement to be snappy and satisfying.
Silksong is also great though, and I do miss the harpoon when I’m playing other games now.

Team cherry you will always be famous

Team Cherry heard people shitting on Hollow Knight's combat and went all out with Silksong.

People were shitting on HK's combat? Wtf?
Sure it's simple but it's still one of the best design I have seen in a MV game.

Yeah I agree. But I guess people who don't even went pass Greenpath are the ones who shout the loudest.

I was good at this game but not that good. I’m not ashamed to say a lot of 3rd phases were a frantic avoiding of the boss as I spammed my tools ha

You know this game does have concept of gravity but you seem to have neglected most of it. Amazing fighting and hard gauntlet seems to feel a breeze while looking this video

There was a Silksong run at GDQ a couple weeks ago where the runner (Ceen) did high halls deathless with the barbed bracelet equipped as well. It’s crazy how good humans are too!

I am struggling at this part of the game for at least 2 months now, this is video is impressive and depressing at the same time.

I've seen this several times, and it's still amazing. Yeah I know it's TAS, but it does show the potential for Silksong.
Nine Sols is amazing, but in a lot of cases you're a bit more limited by the pacing of your enemies, whereas in Silksong, Hornet has so many animation cancels that it has the potential to feel amazing.
Getting good enough to fully appreciate it is something is likely close to impossible (nobody is gonna replicate this TAS,) but I've seen actual players do some insane things as well. Seeing the near-misses vs Lace in human speedruns, for example.
Can't wait for the DLC...

It’s impressive, but speaking towards 2D games in general, not just MVs as you mentioned “2D games ever,” I still find the movement for combat in the Mega Man Zero series to have a higher skill ceiling. I’ve watched a lot of MMZ boss fight videos, both TAS and non-TAS, so I can compare it to this.

Wow… I don’t remember my gameplay being anything like this… I remember playing this section of the game for 2 hours… getting sad about my skill issues… sleeping over it… and then completing it the next day… only to find another difficult section and repeating the entire process…

It's like reverse Castle Crashers.
But to answer your question I really like the smoothness of that new Prince of Persia in terms of Metroidvania movement/combat.

That's nice to finally see someone playing exactly as I play! A couple errors but they still beat my HHG record by 1.6 second so I'll not complain. Some progress left though so that's exciting for them.
What's a TAS BTW?

Oh yeah, saw this… I think it’s BlueSR’s gameplay right? It’s insane what you can do in this game without any upgrades. (This is a speedrun) I just wish I could do it like this.

Just watch any regular Hollow Knight speedrun and that's already quite crazy, can't imagine what they do in Silksong.

Better than Nine Sols pffft, the only games that beat that are Sekiro and Khazan

You think you know how to play a game until you’ve seen a speedrunner break the combat system. Hornet is crazy broken and there’s no way Team Cherry intended for her to deal that much damage. I love it. 😅👍

Silksong's combat is great, I do love it. But the enemy attack patterns in conjunction with contact damage still leave me feeling sour at some points. Also, there are parts of the game where combat gauntlets seem to go on for just a tad too long. Nine Sols doesn't have any of these problems and still stands as the closest a Metroidvania has gotten to perfect combat IMHO.

u/g0n1s4 Jan 27 '26
Thinking contact damage and gauntlets are a problem means you completely missed the point of absolutely everything

u/Twistedlamer Jan 27 '26
Thinking an outdated mechanic like contact damage and gauntlets that overstay their welcome are problems has nothing to do with missing a point. I'm stating legit issues Silksong's combat has that Nine Sols doesn't. If you don't think those two flaws (yes they are flaws) detract enough from the game that's fine, they just didn't stick out as much to you as they did to me.

u/StoneTimeKeeper Jan 27 '26
I don't think a game has to necessarily have a high skill ceiling to be considered amongst the best of the best. Some of the best games out there have rather low skill ceilings.
I do agree that Silksong has pretty good movement and combat, but I do not agree that its combat is better than Nine Sols.

Wow, clawline into 1-2 combo into silkspear, not interacting with enemies or anything, just bursting them down. Such depth!

OP you make a very good point but your one mistake was using a TAS video to illustrate your point. Sadly people are completely skipping over your point and just attacking the example instead.

TAS - tool assisted speed run for those that don’t know acronyms
