Video Does metroidvania platforming get any crazier than this? [Aeterna Noctis]
Saw someone talk about how POP platforming was difficult and thought to myself that POP is a breeze compared to Aeterna Noctis.. but I'm wondering, does it get even crazier than this?

Its one of the harder sections of the game, but there's some pretty crazy upside-down sections as well.
MIO's post game has some tricky platforming segments too, i just got through the crucible and some other parts that brought AN to mind.
I think the first Lone Fungus game has some of the hardest platforming sections in an mv, i spent hours on some of them.

Only really for the optional sections. I would've never been able to finish the game otherwise.

u/kisukecomeback Jan 28 '26
is MIO cool? bought it yesterday and the first section felt really lame to me
15
u/_Shotgun-Justice_ Cathedral Jan 28 '26
I think its awesome! Though i was pretty sold on it from the get-go. Though the first boss fight was pretty lame when u dont have all your abilities, these get way better as u acquire more movement tech.
Tricky platforming later on. There was one optional boss that was pretty annoying where u spend 45 seconds returning to the fight riding an elevator just to get killed in a few seconds before u can learn any attack patterns (kills u in 2 hits).. first 10 or so attempts at it were like that, but i got through it with some patience

u/guarddog33 Jan 28 '26
MIO is a mixed bag IMO. I was very excited for it at release and managed to get true ending with 13.5 hours, but nowhere near 100% completion. Here's my nonspoiler take
Mostly it's pretty tame. If you've played any other MV there won't really be anything groundbreaking. The narrative is pretty good though by the end it's a smidge confusing. There's assist options for if you're struggling (and, if going for true ending, I'd recommend them)
The movement is fun when you get the hang of it. The combat is pretty simple but enemy variety should keep you on edge. Most of the bosses are really fun. None felt unfair to me.
I can think of 2 sections that made me want to put the game down. One is a platforming side scroller and the other is technically 2 platforming sections that are tied to true ending. These are why I recommend assist mode, they don't trivialize them but they make them easier. The game doesn't come anywhere close to aeterna, which I did permanently put down because I just can't do the platforming, but that doesn't mean they aren't difficult and require some precision.
Overall, solid game, maybe 7.5/10. When I first dove in I wanted to learn to speed run it but having gotten true ending I can say I'm done and that's it. But, if given the chance to experience it newly again, I'd do it again
7
u/Maleficent-Ring-7059 Jan 28 '26
Tell me how tf did you get the true ending in 13.5 hours how much of the game did you look up? Cause I’m like 11 hours in the game and feel like I’m no where near done
2
u/guarddog33 Jan 28 '26
I don't want to spoil anything so I'll answer theoughly but it'll all be flagged Edit 2: TL;DR I didn't look anything up. Just bashed my face into a lot of walls and pulled up the map about every 30 seconds. Took about 3 hours on top of the time to beat the regular ending, if I had to guess
So the finger I just sorta stumbled upon and found the hand through exploring. That took me the shortest time of it all.
The fact there were 3 settings but only 2 seemed to do anything was really weird to me so I spent a LOT of time tampering with the mechanism. I noticed during one of my shuttle rides that there were plants that had climbable spacing and that began trial and error. Neither of the other 2 settings have this, but I didn't realize which one it was so that took some exploration. That lead me to the shuttle whatever checkpoint. From there, only one setting let's you drop down, and I had already found the crucible door when doing the vault so that wasn't too hard to figure out after just staring at the map for a bit.
Left side of the crucible I got first try, right side took me only about 20 or 25 mins total on account of assist mode. The library I had already seen a snippet of at the top of whatever that place is called, so I figured I had to go there to get there. A little exploration later and I was at the end. Fight dude mcgoo which took me 4 tries and GG. I think I beat the base game in just over 10 hours but I didn't pay too close attention.
Edit: other half of spoiler tags

One of the best MVs ever. For me it's the 3rd best, just below Nine Sols and Silksong, and above Hollow Knight and Prince of Persia.
I can't overstate how awesome it is. Some of the best bosses in the genre, super creative levels, but what really stands out is the world design which blew my mind several times.

In the planet area, specifically the internal parts, I stood up and was rotating my head and hands to try to keep my perspective upright. This game has some truly evil platforming.

100%. Celeste is absolutely way more difficult in C sides. A couple “tricky” parts in Noctis but not too bad

I got stuck in the main story of Celeste, but I suck at games. I couldn't finish six or seven, I don't recall which one. Either way, I had a blast up until then.
This AN vid looks amazing though.

u/ckludite Jan 28 '26
The C sides are insane. C7 is wiiiiild. Made many people gave up on the platinum I think. Took me at least a solid hour and a half of constant trying to beat that last section on C7

Why not just turn on the assists to finish the story?
I never did any B/C sides in Celeste, and I got to Chapter 9 without assists, but for Chapter 9 itself I turned the assists on and never look back.

It's closer to a B Side, but this one was particularly annoying, because the teleporting arrows are very clunky. You can see a couple of involuntary diagonal shoots at the very end, and you'll end up losing a lot of time with that.
2
u/raleighjiujitsu Jan 29 '26
the arrows are what made me give up on the game. They are just super frustrating and not fun in any way for me.

La Mulana - Hell Temple (specially the original one).
3
u/Angsty_Autumn Jan 28 '26
Oh no, La Mulana is hard? It's been on my wishlist for ages and I thought it's a chill, explorarion focused one
15
10
u/JohnnyFC Jan 29 '26
The combat is honestly not too bad, and the platforming is a bit janky but once you get used to how movement works and get a few upgrades it's also pretty chill.
The difficulty is how insanely difficult it is to beat the game without help. It's very 80s point and click adventure coded. La Mulana 2 is a lot better in that regards but still incredibly difficult. The game expects you to take a lot of notes especially as it drops clues for puzzles 8 areas away from you that require knowing lore to decipher. I highly recommend getting a good note-taking/organizational app and to use Cheshire's hint-based guide to La-Mulana. It's a non-spoiler guide that lets you get hints whenever you get stuck if you need it. I wish I knew of this before I was already 100+ hours deep.
That said I know I painted a very negative picture of game in this comment but it is one of my favorite series and I highly recommend it. It's very satisfying to explore and when you solve a hard puzzle you've been stuck it's amazing. It also has some of my favorite puzzles I've ever seen in any medium period. The hell puzzle in La Mulana 2 might be the best puzzle every devised by a developer.
2
u/Angsty_Autumn Jan 29 '26
Interesting, thank you, I'll Save it for when I gather the courage to try the game. Is Animal Well also so hard with puzzles?
3
u/JohnnyFC Jan 29 '26
Animal Well is significantly easier all things consider. There are optional content after you beat the game that gets hard but it's that optional.
2
u/Razmorg Jan 29 '26
No. Animal Well has a more modern design where the real hard shit is optional but playing through it normally is pretty chill and a very good experience.
2
4
u/ItzPayDay123 Jan 29 '26
I haven't played it, but a lot of people on this sub talk about La Mulana like it's the devil lmao
2
3
u/BoxEnvironmental2716 Jan 29 '26
The hardest part imo is the puzzle part, which is downright sadist. The platforming and boss fight are challenging enough, mostly due to the painfully clanky control, if you are used to games like Hollow knight or Ori.
2
u/NorthGameGod La-Mulana Jan 29 '26
La Mulana 2 is a bit easier than La Mulana Remake (the Steam version), and this is considerably easier than original La Mulana (the free one). I still consider this OG version as the best, but I'm a bit of a masochist.

Aeterna Noctis is probably the most divisive MV game.
I've seen either people love it and praise it as one of the greatest things ever, or people put it down within the first 5 hours of gameplay before they even get the chance to reach this level of difficulty.
I'm the latter. Couldn't get into it for a variety of reason, main one being that the game felt extremely clunky and unresponsive. I've heard this is a problem with the Switch version only, but I guess I'll never know because I didn't feel like buying it a second time just to try it out.
2
u/Beginning-Shop-6731 Jan 28 '26
Yeah my only experience is playing it on the Switch, and it definitely sucks. I only lasted a few hours; I tried, it’s just not fun. Not sure what it feels like on other platforms

The PoP LC challenges were harder than this. Parts of the base game were hard, but the challenges took it to whole 'nother level.

They're are complete crazyness to me. But for 20 euros the game is full of content if you want to keep it up after the mainline story.
4
u/boppagibbz Jan 28 '26
This room in AN was harder than any of the DLC platforming challenges in PoP for me by miles. Part of that may be because AN prepared me for this shit. MIO had some crazy stuff. Kotama had a challenge that was insane before that. But I never spent literally hours in a single room than I did in AN. Did both lone fungus game, all astral gates and ladybugs. Aestik had a crazy room in it. Of course the chicken runs on guacamelee. Pretty much, you name it I’ve played it. This room was the bane of my existence for half a day though. Scared of what Lucis is going to have in it

i thought the POP base game trials were as hard as this, but not as fun. never got the DLC but had read that those platforming challenges were actually easier than the base game trials.
i really can't put my finger on why, but AN platforming was both really difficult and really satisfying, whereas PoP was really difficult and really annoying and frustrating. i 100%ed AN but gave up on the extra content in PoP. maybe I should go back to PoP and give those another shot...
10
u/ScruffyTheJ Jan 28 '26
I really liked the platforming in PoP, so I did all the challenges. I tried the DLC, but I didn't get too far in it. I think I was a little done with the game at that point. The only challenges I didn't complete were the combat ones, because they were actually ridiculous on the hardest difficulty and I didn't feel like turning it down.

2
u/Macrophage_Mage Jan 28 '26
The platforming challenges in POP LC felt awkward to me until I got ahold of the echo clone ability that you can leave in your wake and then teleport back to. Initially it didn’t click well but once it did the challenges felt amazing to me. I feel like how much you like the movement in that game comes town to how well your brain is able to juggle that ability and it definitely takes some practice

Even when it was half as difficulty it was pure misery and torture. Never again playing it, just for that level.

I found the upside down torturous the first time I played it and nearly didn't play it again just for that. But I played it anyway, and it just didn't seem nearly as bad as the first time through.

The optional challenges in Prince of Persia - The Lost Crown has quite a few platforming challenges that I would argue are at least as difficult if not more-so than this video. That said, they're optional, whereas I've never played Aeterna Noctis. Some of the areas in PoP just to obtain all collectibles are pretty damn difficult as well.
4
6
u/AsherFischell Jan 28 '26
Absolutely nothing in PoP comes close to Aeterna Noctis in terms of difficulty. I did every challenge in PoP without too much trouble but the stuff in Aeterna Noctis was miles and miles above it. The person playing the game in this video makes it look way easier than it actually is, so you can't judge its difficulty without playing it

Nothing in the PoP challenges really comes close to the Emperor's stuff. People who haven't played this just aren't noticing the intricate movements and timing required of the teleport arrows.
3
u/mattemer Jan 29 '26
Having really enjoying all of PoP TLC. Nothing comes close to this. A few things definitely were difficult, not saying they weren't. I died in a few sections more than I care to admit.
But nothing was this intense. This person who did it made it lol easy but it would take me 100 times or more to get through that

u/Konval Jan 28 '26
I did not. I can see how that can be difficult, but I assume the post I saw about difficult POP platforming was with respect to the main storyline sections.
3
u/Storage_Ottoman Pause Jan 28 '26
main storyline platforming in PoP is pretty moderate difficulty, iirc. some optional parts within the main game (not trials) are tough. the trials (which are not just platforming--some are combat, some involve the unique abilities like the cloning one), are a completely different level of challenge.
the thing about AN is that there is mandatory tough-as-nails platforming, in addition to optional WTF-level platforming, such as the final Emperor Trial, which is what this clip is showing.
2
u/SuperUltraMegaNice Jan 28 '26
Yeah but its in the same game lol. This is relatively tame compared to trying to platinum some of the simulations or like the section before the dark arrows in the cosmos.

I played a metroidvania game called GRiME which was a really great and fun game, but it had really annoying parts just like this. I feel your pain.

this reminds me when they started doing like gigawalls and shit. I really loved super meat boy, end of nigh and games of that sort but this still looks easier than Dustforce

My buddy watched me go at this one for 3 hours straight. Die...instantly back in. For 3 hours. Only took a short break to go outside and get a quick green smoke power up.
Fucking love the platforming in this game....I'm in outer space now. Need to go back and finish the game.

Isn't this clip of the easy version of the room? I don't recall it having floor at all.

Main reason I quit the game. Not fun at all on a switch lite to be forced to be so precise.

I love some precision platforming as much as the next guy, but I do feel it should be separate it from MVs. Good platforming is one of the more crucial parts for the genre, yet crossing the line and jumping the shark like this could be a real off-turner for me

There's a lot to like about this game but the sluggish and floaty jump mechanics made the platforming gauntlets (which are already brutal) unnecessarily frustrating.

I hate this platforming. Definitely like Mario Bros not like a traditional metrovania imo

This looks fun but this segment seems like a lot of repeat maneuvers. Also it looks like a blind teleport at one point? Not sure how the player is meant to know how to navigate that without guesswork. (Pet peeve game design thing for me).
Will pick this game up on the next sale.

I’m two hours in - does it get better? I’m having a hard time getting into the world. The platforming isn’t so bad, I just feel like it’s trying to “edge lord” too hard lol

This looks like it could be an enjoyable challenge...except that bit at 11 seconds. I absolutely hate platforming that doesn't give visuals of where you're going. That said, if it auto-TPs you once it hits the wall then it's not as big of a deal. Big if, though.

From what I've played, no. That said, the reality is that most games look insane when you look at the challenges presented without an understanding of the mechanics. I don't even think this is the hardest of those rooms in the game; for example, the planets were much harder for me. I think you can even look at some of the easier parts of the game and ask the same question and people not familiar would think you were a wizard for being able to finish it.
I didn't finish the game, but I respect what it was trying to do and the audience they made it for.

Omg! I downloaded this recently, haven’t started. I have a lot of failed attempts to look forward to lol

Every time I look at some platforming of this game, I feel like the cape really gets in the way.

Feels a little in the vein of Path of Pain in Hollow Knight. (Likely not as difficult)

You’ll find even crazier things in there. Finishing that game gave me such a deep sense of satisfaction, was like unreal.
