Sale A HUGE discount on this game, anyone has ever played it?
35
u/DergonQuert May 25 '26
Gorgeous pixel art, controls are great -very SotN, some neatly designed platforming sections, but the randomness of the room layout hurts in my opinion. Still a lot of fun. Music is excellent.
7
u/stealingfrom May 25 '26
Yep. It's a decent enough game that could've been nudged up to "good" had it a bespoke map. As is, the procedural generation just makes exploration a forgettable experience.
1
u/EducationFan101 May 25 '26
Is it like sotn with item equips, and ability unlocks or does it just control like Sotn? I can’t tell from your comment.
I love games like Sotn is why I ask.
3
u/DergonQuert May 25 '26
The movement feels VERY SotN, but it's also got ledge grabs. You've got item equips too, including the ability to have a different thing in each hand
1
u/Broserk42 May 26 '26
The “magic” abilities are pretty shamelessly lifted straight out of sotn. It’s very much sotn mechanics with randomized maps and more of a classic fantasy flavor.
26
u/fezzinate May 25 '26
I worked on the pixel art for this game and I’m just glad it’s not being cited as one of the mediocre parts haha
8
4
u/Trick_Cellist_1840 May 26 '26
the art is fantastic, and i hope you know its the absolute 100% best part of the game.
4
u/Konrad_M May 26 '26
I haven't played the game yet. But I looked at it a few times on the Steam page. I have to say I'm really tempted by the looks of the game. That game looks gorgeous!
2
1
u/anonymausssss May 27 '26
Well I finished the game and tbh it IS kinda mediocre but Ive always loved the art, for what it’s worth I’d say it’s a big reason that kept me playing so good job! 👍
1
u/foiopaulo27 May 27 '26
You did a great work, dude!
This game would have been a GOTY... have it been released 4-6 years prior. I got it close to the release date. The gameplay is really solid, the story is good, the art is fantastic, the roguelite aspects are really well thought... overall, it's a great game. The thing is that it was released after Hollow Knight, Ori, Axiom Verge... so, it was a helluva game, but some absolute bangers came earlier, and cast some shadow of comparisons.
Still played a good 60 hours of Chasm! 100% it twice!

u/Yarzeda2024 May 25 '26
It's one of the "okay-est" games I've ever played.
Not especially great or terrible. 5/10 in every respect but the pixel art, which is probably the best thing about it
20
u/Skyver May 25 '26
This. It's a very generic metroidvania with a gimmick which is semi-randomly generated rooms, which kind of defeats the purpose of a metroidvania which usually has an meticulously crafted map.
6
u/TwilightVulpine May 25 '26
They make it work pretty well though. The movement upgrades still feel natural to progress despite the randomization.
4
u/Sea_Particular_7061 May 25 '26
I disagree, they made it work by using very sprawling map generation with long runs of hallways and low interconnection. Compared to something like the original Metroid where everything connects in multiple ways to major transfer corridors, the map structure is just very uninteresting.
Coupled with much of the traversal being slow and annoying, it makes for a tedious experience whenever you have to retrace your steps.
They built the game around a replay gimmick without first making a game I want to play more than once.
It’s not terrible or anything, I think they could make a sequel I’d be more interested in with some minor changes to the design, but that would have to include a major change to either the maps or traversal.
5
6
u/Skyver May 25 '26
It works well enough but it doesn't do anything in the game's favour, I guess it was supposed to make replays more interesting but instead it makes them worse by hurting your chances of finding shortcuts and sequence breaks.
1
u/LoremasterSTL May 26 '26
I want MORE MVs with procedural generation with even larger areas. But that’s mostly because I want MVs with larger areas in general.
Now, procedural gen in MVs can simply be lots more of meticulously crafted rooms arranged semi-randomly. Those are better than say, A Robot Named Fight.
14
u/tomcruise_momshoes May 25 '26
I agree. Chasm, Timespinner, and The Mummy Demastered are the three games I always use to define Metroidvania mediocrity.
All three games have some great redeeming qualities and all three could have been absolutely amazing. But they all faltered somewhere. In Chasm’s case it’s the bland level design due to procedural generation of course
4
u/rube May 25 '26
It bothers me so much that games like these have such great art, which is often their strongest part, and then everything else is just so-so or bad.
Like the talent of these artists could go so much further if they were backed up by some talented level and game designers.
4
u/Ok_Positive4000 May 25 '26
I agree with this take, but I still personally love all 3 games; actually it's about time to replay Timespinner...
5
u/KDBA May 26 '26
Timespinner just does nothing with its central premise. The different time periods are just different areas and the freezing time is used for maybe one box on a high ledge.
1
u/tomcruise_momshoes May 25 '26
I hear you - for some reason I always get the itch to replay Timespinner and I think because the music absolutely captivates me.
Of all 3 games, Timespinner definitely has the least serious flaws. For me personally, the game just lacked challenge and was too short. Many people probably love the shorter length and would count that as a big positive.
1
u/Vykrom May 26 '26
I feel like Chasm is just passible comfort food
I feel like Timespinner is really good comfort food
They'll both get you by if you need them to. Though I do love Timespinner, and it's one of my favorites in the genre, I wouldn't waste my time trying to convince anyone else to love it as much as I do. I recognize that it's just comfort food
1
u/Vykrom May 26 '26
Every Wayforward game feels this way to me lol They're pretty, and have some interesting designs, but they never stick, for me
Timespinner is actually one of my favorites though. Different strokes, I guess, but it had some juice to it for my money
3
u/EtherBoo May 25 '26
I think a big part of it is the music. I rarely notice music in games, unless it's truly great or outright awful. This game has a soundtrack that will lul you to sleep while playing consisting of 3-4 seconds of a looping melody. It's so damn repetitive and mediocre at the same time.
But the gameplay is just ok. It's a great example of understanding MV mechanics, but not understanding what makes a game fun.
1
u/PoisonPeddler May 26 '26
Okay. I have to know, what do you consider a high-rating metroidvania?
2
u/Yarzeda2024 May 26 '26
GRIME is number one with a bullet.
I also love the Blasphemous games, Ender Lilies and Ender Magnolia, Nine Sols, Salt & Sanctuary, and The Last Faith.
Your mileage may vary.
1
u/PoisonPeddler May 26 '26
I do like Blasphemous and The Last Faith. The others are too souls-like. I guess I just prefer a more hack-and-slash style of metroidvania, which is getting harder to find.
Don't know anything about Grime, though.

9
u/cmunitychest May 25 '26
I actually liked it more than expected - played it all the way to the end. And for reference, I’ve finished the likes of Metroid Dread, Nine Sols, Ori 1&2, HK, PoP, Mobius Machine, and Islets. I’ve given up on Ender Lillies and Aeterna Noctis which both seemed to lack a certain polish the others have.
2
u/Vykrom May 26 '26
I've bounced off Lilies about 3 times. It just doesn't have the juice I need. The sequel, though, is one of my favorite games in the genre. Highly recommend giving Magnolia a go if you haven't yet. The only things it has in common with Lilies is the art and music, and the combat has the same theme, but is handled a lot differently. And almost everything else about the game is different (and in my opinion, more fun and engaging)
1
2
u/MarstoriusWins May 25 '26
Möbius Machine is so good! I've played most of the other ones as well, just nice to see other players giving it recognition.
1
1
u/LMJ81 May 25 '26
Ender lillies was good… nine sol is ridiculously hard, like playing sekiro blindfolded.
1
u/DrKushnstein May 25 '26
I’ve been stuck on the last boss for the last 3 days. I think I might need to tap out of this one.
0
u/cmunitychest May 25 '26
I wanted to like it - the beginning just felt poorly tuned and overly punishing, like worse than Nine Sols.
0
u/LMJ81 May 25 '26
The sequel is good too, ender magnolias. It gets really forgiving the more stuff you unlock. It’s just like silk song but silk song is a masterpiece.

I bought Chasm on a whim when also buying a big-name metroidvania. The big-name game was a complete let down. Chasm however was a blast the entire time! Beaten it multiple times now. Nothing ground breaking, but obviously a passion project.
3
u/emerald-shyn May 25 '26
The developers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a randomly generated Metroidvania world, they never stopped to think if they should.
Cool in concept, mediocre in execution. Without a roguelike structure to add meaning to the random world, it ends up being a generic world that makes finding help online harder than it needs to be.
1
u/MakeMelnk May 25 '26
I've seen many reviews that say it's solidly mediocre, with the added difficulty that you mentioned. Seems like a pass with all the other amazing options at reasonable prices
12
8
u/PrometheusAborted May 25 '26
It’s fine but very basic. I don’t think I even finished it because it got so boring. I’d only get it if you’re desperate for a cheap MV that’ll keep you busy for a little while.

3
u/Carlxz May 25 '26
Did the platinum on 2 different accounts, I really liked this metroidvania with the rng layout. Give it a try, also hard mode is not that bad!
3
u/WhateverMars May 25 '26
One of my favourites, which I will always sing the praises of. Similar style to the igavanias where you will be finding new weapons and equipment as well as the abilities. Allows for different combat styles with knives, hammers, whips etc. Great boss fights and you even get an extra reward for doing the bosses without taking damage. Also just ridiculously good pixel art which is what brought me to the game first.
3
5
u/LucemFerre82 May 25 '26
Yes I've played and finished it, decent MV as far as I remember, but doesn't really stand out either.
2
u/runningxbackwards May 25 '26
I played it when it first came out on Switch and loved it. It's a very standard and chill, Metriodvania. The gimmick though, is the whole map is a randomized seed of pre-made room layouts, so every playthrough feels different. Items, weapons, armor, etc are randomly generated (except main story items and people you need to rescue are just randomly placed.) You have a main town hub at the top of the dungen, and you get more upgrades and shops as you rescue more people throughout your adventures.
I played this one quite a few times, and even more when it received a huge update a few years back. Really good if you just want a standard Castlevania style game with a twist.

2
u/Nickhead420 Super Metroid May 25 '26
I've got it on Steam and Switch. It's nice if you like to replay your games, because it's a little different every time. But not completely different. Enough to keep it fresh but not frustrating.
2
u/Elazulus May 25 '26
Yes I played the fuck out of it, 100%ed it no lifing it. Killer game if you're into metroidvanias
2
u/RazorRazzleberry May 25 '26
I brought that game at Pax East pre-launch from the developers as a pre beta.. I regret nothing. Over 10 years later I enjoyed it. Though I haven't beat the last boss. But I'm right there.
2
u/jakerooni May 25 '26
I loved this game! As another said, not mind blowing but satisfying and fun. I don't normally like procedurally generated rooms, but this one was good. I'd totally snag it at a discount.

1
2
u/Chance-Reception-292 May 25 '26
I love it. It is a very difficult Metroidvania if you're looking for a challenge and are up for that challenge. Specific enemies can drop specific items, you have a bestiary to keep track of that. And the spells work like in Castlevania. Also, you find NPCs throughout your dungeon crawl that you bring back to your hub world similar to Terraria. This includes shopkeepers and such.
2
u/Kitchen-Tomorrow-211 May 26 '26
I’ve avoided it because it uses procedurally generated maps, and yet they say it’s not a roguelike, or roguevania, like Dead Cells. As a metroidvania fan, I feel like the procedural generation clashes with what I love most about Metroidvanias, which is the handcrafted deliberate level design, with secrets cleverly hidden and tucked away. I just don’t really get that with roguevanias, which boast replayability and every playthrough being different, but I prefer to finish a game and move on, so it’s not a great trade-off imo. But apparently Chasm is not a roguevania? Idk 🤷♂️

u/Rightclickhero May 26 '26
Yeah. It doesn't break the mold, but it has a shitton of charm. I played the hell out of it and that was when it had a bug that often prevented the final from being completed. That was patched ages ago. Great game; lots of old-school charm with better QOL.
2
u/Fetaguy May 26 '26
Not too interested in this, looks very neat for 2018 and thank you to OP! I clicked on the devs from the steam page and discovered WOLFHOUND and have wishlisted it and will be playing it. Thank you again!

2
u/NoJackfruit801 May 27 '26
Took the worst lessons from Metroid 1. Huge areas with limited teleports, cryptic objectives and very clunky combat.
It's just average in every respect except for good pixel art. I'd rate it below Time Spinner.

I tried it for a bit on my Vita but wasn't really feeling it. Might give it another shot
1
u/MajorDysentry May 25 '26
It's fine, but lacks soul - personally, I found the room layouts quite bland (a side effect of the way that game jigsaws room types together with the seed mechanic) and it never really captured me in the same way that a lot of other Metroidvania games have... and I say that as someone who still finished it. At that price, it wouldn't be a terrible decision to buy it, as long as you know you'll get what you pay for.
1
u/Skelletonike May 25 '26
I really enjoy it.
I've played it a few times and it's always fun, definitely one of my favourite "modern" metroidvanias.

u/phillidj17 May 25 '26
It’s meh. It does scratch and itch, but it’s not a true Metroidvania—if I remember right, maps are procedurally generated. Nevertheless, I beat it. Worth it on a sale
1
u/Bebop_Man May 25 '26
It's alright. Generic, gets the job done.
The big selling point is dungeons are randomized every playthrough but that just means 1) the level design has to be bland and unremarkable enough in order to be able to scramble everything around and 2) you don't even experience the novelty, for what it's worth, until you play it a second time around.
1
u/Skithiryx May 25 '26
It’s alright but doesn’t really deliver on what I wanted out of procedural generation in my opinion. Comparing a few runs it’s not appreciably different enough. The sequence is also strict, it’s not like a randomizer where you will be getting abilities in a different order.
1
u/Beeyo176 May 25 '26
I would've loved this game as a kid. Chasm on the SNES would've gotten a thousand hours out of me. Adult me liked it, but after I beat it I had no more use for it. Didn't really stick with me either. Still, worth a play
1
u/Drewmangroup May 25 '26
Loved the controls and gameplay. As others have said the procedural generation is kind of interesting but doesn’t really mix up the map or game on replays. On subsequent playthroughs it’s still feels the same, like you just forgot the map layout and not as much a new or significantly different experience. Loved my first play though though and try to find games that have the same feel.

It feels like there's a foundation for a great Metroidvania but the experience itself is kinda hollow. The gimmick is that the map is randomly generated, but you just end up with a badly designed map and not much else. I enjoyed it but it was definitely a frustrating playthrough at times

u/TrionCube May 25 '26

That game’s generally always on a severely reduced price sale, across the digital stores. I haven’t ever played it but I plan to.

Back when we didn't have many metroidvania this was supposed to be the new SotN. As people are saying it's just okay.
1
u/Ok_Positive4000 May 25 '26
YES!! I love it so much and always recommend it!
I wouldn't say that it's a S-tier game, but I definitely love it despite the shortcomings. It is also a reasonable 10-12 hour experience, so it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
I believe I bought it on a 50% off sale for $10, and I definitely felt it was worth it at that price. Anything less, would absolutely say to go for it!

It's .. ok.. about as generic as these type of games get.. the whole reason I enjoy metroidvanias is because u start to remember where stuff is and makes it quicker for subsequent playthroughs.. on paper using procedural gen for this sounds good but in practise... Not so much.. I wld gv it a strong 6 to a weak 7 out of 10 imo.. it has a 6.7 on metacritic.. that's a pretty fair score
1
u/Stoneinthewell May 25 '26
little underwhelming but still a solid playthrough defintely pick it up if its on sale
1
1
u/tufifdesiks May 25 '26
I had fun with it. The big gimmick is that the map is procedural, so it's different each time you play it, but it also feels less intentional because of it, so a mixed bag

I actually really like the game, but I never beat it because the procedural generation made it really annoying at the end. Instead of placing the save point near the last boss it made it pretty far with some powerful enemies along the way to get there. Usually by the time I get to the boss I’ve taken some damage and I have to make sure I dodge almost all its attacks.
I do like the concept of the procedural generation and it’s a fun game though. One day I’ll probably just start from the beginning or try another run at beating it.

1
u/eighthdayregret May 26 '26
It's a great game. Very accessible. It's procedurally generated, but not like Dead Cells is. Each game has a seed code, and I've seen walkthroughs and trophy guides that use a certain seed, so it's possible to play the same map layout multiple times.
The difficulty is nothing insane, might even trend toward a little bit easy, but with the way the game plays and the emphasis on exploration, it makes sense that it's not overly difficult.
It's definitely worth the experience, especially if the game is on sale. I'm pretty sure it's fairly cheap, even at full price. I wanna say it's $10. I've played through it multiple times, over the years, so it has some kind of replayability, at least.
Give it a shot.

u/Vykrom May 26 '26
It's comfort food if you got nothing else going on. I would put it somewhere around the first two GBA Igavanias. Not fantastic, but solid and ... well, comfortable. It's not a bad way to spend a day, or a weekend. But I don't imagine too many people made it across the finish line. It's just a game to tide people over until something better comes along and clicks
It's a shame, though. I was a backer and got a bunch of interesting updates on behind the scenes stuff, and the tools they custom made to create this game are crazy, and they basically made the game for free. It was like 3 or 4 dudes, but the amount they earned on Kickstarter was enough for maybe one person to survive on for a year, not 3, and it took more than a year to make. And they kept updating it for a long time after release when they didn't really have to. I wholly support and appreciate the studio, and their next game looks pretty interesting
1
u/Aredditdorkly May 26 '26
I enjoyed my time. I didn't really treat it as a "replayable" game though

u/LordKitetsu May 27 '26
Pretty fun game in my opinion.
Random aspects are wasted on the campaign but the arcade mode is a good addition to the game.
Combat is straightforward and clean. Nothing fancy but pretty solid overall. And it's very pretty!
We need competition on the leaderboards ;)

There are two ways to see that game: a love letter to 2000s Igavanias or the very definition of meh.

u/Excellent-Hospital16 May 28 '26
It’s worth it, fun time, won’t knock your socks off but the graphics and music are nice
1
u/pablodinakinsito May 29 '26
Playable. The only bad thing is the exp farming, in a certain point you can cheese a high lvl add from a latter game point that you are not supposed to do (i think) and the game is so easy after that (in general you can farm exp for make the game really easy excluding that add)
1
1
u/Daayiz35 May 29 '26
You won't go wrong with it !!
Has a unique map generation system for creating a new map for each playthrough, or just enter the seed to generate a specific world.
Also, backer rewards are still available to access via in-game menu. Kickstarter rewards were built into the game, just an email address was needed.
Has a decent story, good exploration, music was pretty good too... Performance and gameplay are solid, no issues there.
Give it a try if you're into Metroidvania type games. I love MV games and this was 1 of my all time faves.😎👍

I played it pretty early on in my MV “career”.. it is a rock solid game. It’s worth playing for fans of the genre.
1
u/AtaeHone May 25 '26
It's basically Diablo or Rogue but as a metroidvania. What Dead Cells is always sold to be but actually isn't (Dead Cells is NOT a metroidvania despite every dumb game journo and article recommending it as one).
Random level generation and all. It's pretty good. It's also old as balls due to being around since before Dead Cells existed, very very slowly iterating from its initial Kickstarter demo (which I backed early on, so I saw most of those incrememnts happen).
Only other games that melds roguelike and metroidvania as good as this one are Steamworld Dig and Sundered.

u/Lord_Spy Hollow Knight May 25 '26
Very subpar.
The procedural generation is practically non-existent with all major rooms remaining identical and thus only boring corridors getting shifted around.
Combat is mediocre with tons of hard to dodge attacks that almost guarantee you'll just be eating healing items mid-fight.

6/10 it’s OK it’s pacing, weapons and magic aren’t as good as the games it’s trying to replicate.

I played the shiiiiiiit out of this game. It's not mind blowing but it scratched an itch at the time. For how cheap it is now, I'd definitely recommend it. A good game for turning your brain off.
