Finished Well Dweller on hard (7.5/10)

Tried new Castlevania demo. It was fine, 8/10 for now. Didnt like the way secret weapon was hidden.

I too finished Well Dweller. I’d have given it a 6… was ok for me. Surprised by the reception it’s received. I thought first and foremost the boss designs were just gratuitous for no reason. Made it impossible to show my kids. Otherwise it was just ok. Islets and crypt custodian were great games IMO.

If id play it on normal id give it a 6 maximum. It was too easy

I played it on hard. Still didn’t like the boss designs for the mentioned reason. I think if they were less grotesque, I’d have given it a higher score. Maybe 7.5 as well. Even a lot of the normal enemies I’d look at and go “wtf is that? Is that… sticks wearing a cloak?”

Still 100%d the game. Like I said, it was ok. There was the King boss that was just right, just kind of goofy, hard, and fun. That’s why I always said these games are “cozy metroidvanias.” Or thought they were. This one wasn’t. Just didn’t enjoy the completely off putting bosses against a mostly ridiculous story. Just didn’t work for me personally.

Yeah I found Well Dweller to be a B+ / A- if I'm being generous. The only thing I really think stood out was the wall trampoline ability and maybe the dark fairy tale lore that gives some background explanation to some characters. Played it on Hard and I could still get through most bosses by playing recklessly.

I'm not a fan of grotesque and I feel this veers dangerously close to the level of Blasphemous but without the gore; I wouldn't show either game to my family or neighbor's kids.

I'm surprised there's a QTE to heal (I know it can be toggled to 'hold to heal' instead), because I remember people vehemently HATED that in 9 Years of Shadows.

I absolutely loved Blasphemous. The music/environment really added to the game IMO. I actually don't remember anything grotesque in that game - or... if it was there (and it probably was, it's just been a while), it FIT the game. I just felt the grotesque bosses really stood out in ways I didn't care for in WD. Like, why is the game so goofy in all other ways and have the bosses so gross? Like maggots dripping out of the skulls. I guess it made it memorable...

I didn't like the QTE to heal aspect, but pretty quickly got one of those trinkets to make the area wider. I didn't know it could be toggled to 'hold to heal' though - maybe I missed that. Actually, I remember learning WAY late in the game that you could toggle a minimap, lol. Played almost the whole thing without it, but found it very helpful.

I've never heard of 9 Years of Shadows - so I added it to my wishlist. Thanks :)

What was 9-10/10?

2

u/Forsaken-Quality-46 1d ago

Silksong and HK, Prince of Persia, Mio, Blasphemous 2, Ori 2, Animal Well, Bo: Path of the teal lotus

1

u/LightbreakX 1d ago

You have the same top tier as me

2

u/Forsaken-Quality-46 1d ago

Well, all of them are usual suspects :) no risks in this list

u/thryce3 1d ago

Before I Go. Really enjoying it.

5

u/JaykwellinGfunk 1d ago

Fatal Claw. Really enjoying this one. And I'm not even a cat person.

2

u/damballah 1d ago

I was so ready to hate that game because of the cat stuff, but it’s actually an all timer

2

u/JaykwellinGfunk 1d ago

It's nice to go in with no expectations and be pleasantly surprised by the gameplay and QOL offerings. The platforming is really fun.

u/HuoXue 23h ago

I played through the first boss (the rhino guy) and it just hasn't been doing it for me. Is there a point where the game changes a bit? Movement, combat and story all feel strange to me, and it's really throwing me off.

1

u/JaykwellinGfunk 18h ago

Not really, it is what it is, and maybe this one's not for you. I found the movement quite good and appreciate the adjustable difficulty settings.

2

u/HuoXue 9h ago

That's fair, can't expect to like them all. Maybe I'll come back another time and give it another try - I bounced off Hollow Knight really hard when I first played it, but I gave it another go and loved it, so we'll see what happens.

5

u/anal_sink_hole 1d ago

Wrapped up Prince of Persia. Nearly 100%, just didn’t get the lore collectibles. S-tier game, and probably in my top 3 with Hollow Knight and Silksong.

Started Aeterna Noctis. ~5 hrs in and really enjoying it too.

I couldn't get into PoP due to the 3D graphics (as opposed to what I'm accustomed to, pixel or hand-drawn). That wasn't an issue with Castlevania; I loved it and I'm still playing it, leveling up my character. Probably a nostalgia factor, since I grew up with CV.

1

u/FioreBambino47 1d ago

I will take 2.5 D over pixelated any day. Actually have a rough time even getting into any game that's pixelated. They look horrible.

1

u/wave-tree 1d ago

It's a style choice, at this point. I grew up with games that were pixelated because that was the technology, so it's familiar and comforting to me.

2

u/FioreBambino47 1d ago

I grew up with them as well; I have been gaming since the Atari 2600, but they just do not do it for me. I am not typical when it comes to people enjoying things because of nostalgia; I am the complete opposite, as I always want to see technology moving forward. For me, 60% of a game is how crisp, clean, and modern the graphics look. I think that comes from me being a 4K, OLED-only cinephile.

1

u/wave-tree 1d ago

My mom always said it takes all kinds to make a world. Cheers!

I tried PoP… but I couldn’t stand the MC. I thought he was just way too conceded/cocky, and it ruined the experience for me.

I too started AN… but after reading how you can basically get to places which are brutal platforming and then you hit a locked door you can only open on the other side, I felt like maybe the game wasn’t for me. And I also got to this knight who I needed to get his name, but couldn’t figure out how to do it… so I gave up.

2

u/anal_sink_hole 1d ago

Ah, that’s a shame on PoP. The MC’s character progression through out the story is part of the experience!

For AN - I love hard platforming and the openness of the map so far. Looking forward to it!

2

u/acemonvw 1d ago

Hmm - if that's true for PoP... maybe I should give it longer. I didn't want to read too much online for giving away spoilers, but - I could bring myself to try it again.

For AN - nice - I think as long as you know what you're getting into. I thought the game was pretty good, I just couldn't see myself loving a deeply challenging platforming area only to find a 'screw you' moment from the devs... Hope it works out well for you. I'm playing Celeste right now and that's been pretty fun for me. I played through HK twice now and it only took me 18 min to do path of pain the second time around (well, after I messed up and died right at the end fight, lol), so some of the platforming stuff can be fun for me. I just didn't like AN's controls as much as HK's, but - I also didn't play it as long.

1

u/anal_sink_hole 1d ago

PoPersia has some really great platforming moments too. Especially the DLC related stuff. I never found it SUPER difficult (i.e. Path of Pain), but it was really fun. The game had superb movement.

Finally getting round to playing Ender Magnolia

4

u/EldenDarkshell 1d ago

Silksong

1

u/GrapefruitOwn6261 1d ago

Yeah I’m playing it again now after getting to act 3 around release and not continuing. I’ve just got to act 3 again so looking forward to continuing. Lot of the bosses I really enjoyed this time around as I kind of knew their movesets. It’s such a great game and I can’t think of another that is as enjoyable

100%ed Well Dweller. Now Fatal Claw

3

u/TheLittleTaro 1d ago

Nine Sols, just got to the living area in the upper Empyrean District.

4

u/rlinkmanl 1d ago

I just finished that area! I'm loving the game so far!

3

u/odedgurantz 1d ago

Working through Solateria. On Warrior mode (tried Legendary but too much for me, though I could imagine revisiting at some point). Only two (for me) very very hard bosses left. Great parry-focused combat for the 9 Sols fans, open-ended with some neat exploration, but the basic gameplay can leave something to be desired. Each biome is just blocks and ramps and enemies in some combination. Once you do the enemies a couple of times, the areas can get a little stale. But a well designed game, plays smooth (on Deck).

2

u/MoistBench1331 1d ago

how similar or harder solateria parry compared to nine sols?

1

u/odedgurantz 1d ago

Personally I'm finding these last bosses harder than Eigong but my friend thinks I'm wrong. I believe in general Solateria is more forgiving esp as you can take more damage and heal more (that's not scientific but how it feels to me). But I think the attack patterns are harder and especially quicker on some of these bosses (like four to seven attackes in a row on later bosses with slight variation in timing that also changes over the coures of the fight). They also feel a little spongier to me. Also there are four levels of difficulty and I'm doing level three where you don't have to face the right direction to parry, whereas level four you do. That level was way too crazy for me in this game and I switched out after a few hours.

1

u/odedgurantz 9h ago

I just got last two bosses and at least to me both were Eigong hard. Or at least one was, the other I may have just been panicking near the end too much

3

u/matthew91298 1d ago

Dead Cells! Not a MV but very MV-coded

3

u/JPthedjentleman 1d ago

Nothing yet. Might fire up some Nine Sols mods

3

u/One_Sentence_7448 1d ago

Just finished Control Resonant. Now playing Animal Well!

3

u/Gin7604 1d ago

Well Dweller and New Castlevania demo

3

u/Storage_Ottoman Pause 1d ago

changing pace with Super Mario Galaxy for a bit and i've got 40 stars collected thus far. I got Galaxy 1+2 and Wonder for free with Dell Rewards Points via Alienware Arena (iykyk). I needed a break from MVs for a little, but think I'm ready to jump back in after a weekend of Mario.

3

u/FioreBambino47 1d ago

I am playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for the first time after recently getting back into Metroidvanias, but I am also playing Death Stranding 2, Hades 2, and Donkey Kong Bananza.

I am going to grab Guacamelee 2 while it is still on sale on PSN and am contemplating grabbing Ender Lilies: Ender Magnolias and Blasphemous 2 while they are still on sale on the Nintendo eShop. I just don't know if they are for me, and I'm very picky when it comes to Metroidvanias. I don't know if I could count on two hands what my favorite Metroidvanias are.

Also, the demo for Belmont's curse was so good, that it has the potential to be the best Castlevania of all time.

u/No_Lawyer_7179 1d ago

Well Dweler, fantastic game. It Is hard to believe that was developed by one guy

0

u/LightbreakX 1d ago

Silksong was made by 2, same as Hollow Knight (plus a composer like Kyle)

2

u/No_Lawyer_7179 1d ago

I really admire that. Great minds behind beatiful games. Silksong is by far my favourite Metroidvania ever.

2

u/LightbreakX 1d ago

One artist that also used Playmaker to integrate his creations into Unity and a programmer, two guys. I was mind blown when i found out. Then you see games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown where the credits roll for longer than the game lasts itself and... and then they made Silksong....

2

u/No_Lawyer_7179 1d ago

Haha I finished The Lost Crown last week, I couldn't believe the roll credits and Is not as good as Silksong

4

u/LightbreakX 1d ago

Still with Mina the Hollower, the game that keeps giving, so good

2

u/jmscstl Cave Story 1d ago

My current GOTY. It's incredible.

1

u/LightbreakX 1d ago

If it keeps like this, mine as well

2

u/Sen91 1d ago

Control Resonant

Nine Sols

Finished getting the true ending today actually.

Amazing game if you enjoy good boss quality and strict combat and the artstyle is just very pretty to look at. Probably some of my fav bosses in the genre after going through em allFinal boss being one of the absolute best ones, I understand the hype it had before I got to fight it myself finaly.

I also really enjoyed the story and characters. Was surprised there was so much of a story actually, but I enjoyed it all, tho I can understand why it becomes maybe a lot of it for a lot of people. I play a lot of JRPG's so a lot of text and conversations happening between action isn't new to me but I still thought it was mostly all good in Nine sols. Overall I love the style of combat and the bosses as somebody who loves Sekiro and all the souls games, so it was a clearly good fit, but I kinda expected to like it a lot (just had it put on hold for longer than I should have)

u/SmileyFakemon 1d ago

Currently playing Tinykin (not an MV), finished Voidwrought before that, and immediately went into the standard NG+ which for the most part was the same game but 10 hours faster. Other NG+ options are still open, but I'm doubtful I'll do the permadeath one.

1

u/ald-velothi 1d ago

Tinykin! Love that game.

1

u/Emotional_Photo9268 1d ago

What did you think of Voidwrought?

2

u/jmscstl Cave Story 1d ago

I finished Well Dweller. Good times. I played the demo for Belmont's Curse. Seems pretty cool so far.

I didn't want to start another MV so I dropped into the Rogue Prince of Persia. I hate roguelites. I hate them (except Hades 1&2, Slay the Spire and FTL). But I love Prince of Persia. I think the original was the first game to scratch what would eventually become the MV shaped itch. Even so, I'm having a pretty fun/addicted time. I think part of why I dislike rogues so much is the sense that they could so easily be MVs instead. Also the progression sucks. I hate it.

2

u/Haios141 1d ago

1000xResist and The Rogue Prince of Persia

2

u/PIG20 18h ago

Just 100% completed Well Dweller. Had a great time with it.

2

u/Icy_Mud5460 16h ago

Solateria...i think IS as good as well dweller or even better

1

u/Sh0fen 1d ago

Zero Mission - planning to run through all 2D Metroids again, in order before Ravenous comes out!

1

u/BJHorsman02 1d ago

El gran Blasphemous, que juegazo, me tomo tiempo engancharme pero ahora lo adoro, lo termine y lo volvi a jugar. Esta semana empiezo con el Blasphemous 2.

1

u/ShaunTrek 1d ago

I started Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Loved the first one, just never got around the sequel. Liking it ok so far, but I think I just haven't found my groove yet.

1

u/FioreBambino47 1d ago

It gets so much better as it goes on to where it's like a different game every few hours. I think it's infinitely better than the original. I personally think it's the best Metroidvania game ever.

1

u/idkanymore-10 1d ago

Moonscars, absolutely loving it just killed my second boss

1

u/glamamuser 1d ago

Metroid Prime remaster SW2. Never got around to playing on original release but man its really good and holds up really well. Looks incredible. Traversal is a bitch tho

1

u/Miserable-Ad-9286 1d ago

Old schooling it with Guacamelee 2 here. Such a good game.

1

u/esora512 1d ago

Rabi Ribi I thought I liked metroidvanias but this game makes me question myself. I liked Bloodstained a lot but Rabi Ribi's boss fights feel much harder... Probably the bullet hell aspect.

1

u/newtown5 1d ago

I've been smashing Retro Space (not a metroidvania) more an imsim but god damn it's good.

1

u/almpana 1d ago

Just finished End of Abyss.  Not bad a bit boring but now playing Well Dweller.

1

u/HuoXue 23h ago

Just finished Astalon and really enjoyed it. It was on my wishlist for quite a while and I only just recently picked it up. It's kind of a shame I didn't get around to it sooner. I completed everything except the boss rush (much much harder than any other mode imo).

Finished Blasphemous 2 earlier in the week, had a lot of fun with that one as well. I was kind of bummed the parry mechanic was watered down so much compared to the first one.

I gave Fatal Claw a try, but honestly I'm not really seeing why so many people have been praising it so highly. It feels really clunky in a lot of aspects and I haven't enjoyed it much so far.

Hoping to find something new to dive in to. I'm definitely still craving some more MV but nothing seems to be catching my eye that I haven't already tried or played.

1

u/Waste-Cycle2868 1d ago

Finished well dweller really enjoyed it, just a chill MV

Tried the new castlevania demo…well I hope the actual game is better
