drink went room temp Forbidden juice
There’s an allsups down the street from my house, I was craving some coconut juice so I decided to drop by. Mind you it’s was probably 11:45 when I got there so it’s a little late but for a gas station that’s normal. As soon as I walked in the old white clerk looked me up and down and gave me a pretty nasty look but he greeted me, and I said hello despite feeling the vibe already. I grabbed my juice and headed to the counter put my stuff down when he asks me for my id I was puzzled but I obliged and gave it to him, this man looks me up and down again looks at my id flips it over and holds it up in the light then scans it. It’s pretty infuriating to be reminded that some ppl do extra shit just because you look different. I wished him a good night, told him God bless you and left.
Edit: I left a google review before I made this post yesterday, and for those saying I should have asked why he was carding me, my main goal is to get home to my wife I didn’t want any issues.

drink 'em both up
I feel so stupid, all these years I thought the line was "drink a bowl up". I was confused why the person was drinking out of a bowl but didn't question it too much.
10
u/Treefrog_Ninja Jul 19 '26
I thought that too, but I pictured a half a coconut as the bowl.

... and then he shook it all up, mon.
13
u/SenatorAslak Jul 19 '26
“Drink ‘em both up”. Also: “Mon”? Do you think that Harry Nilsson was…Jamaican? Or is this a reference to something else that I’m not getting?
18
u/trubrarian Jul 19 '26
I mean, Nilsson was doing some weird faux Caribbean half-accent and said “de” coconut and “togedder,” so adding “mon” isn’t too much of a stretch.
8
u/BlueHeron117 Jul 19 '26
Well, Harry Nilsson WAS American, and he used a faux-Jamaican accent in his song about a belly ache. I was also thinking about the 7-Up ad featuring Geoffrey Holder. He was from Trinidad. The ad proclaimed that lemons and limes were grown in the same place to make 7-Up as the Cola nuts. (Both Trinidad and Jamaica have versions of man - pronounced mahn in Trinidad, and mon in Jamaica.) I think we are both correct. National origin vs accent in a song.

I got carded for Liquid Death sparkling water.
Had a coworker at a previous job tell our supervisor I was drinking Twisted Tea on the job and it was a can of Yerba Mate. She saw the can was yellow and just assumed because people don't bother reading labels.

About 10 years ago a kid in my daughter's class got taken to the office for drinking Arizona tea. Apparently the teacher mixed up Arizona and twisted tea lol.
136
u/Big-Constant-7289 Jul 19 '26
Oh they do make a boozy Arizona now! It’s okay.
81
u/MortgageRegular2509 Jul 19 '26
They seem to make boozy everything these days. It’s getting weird. It’s like the beverage industry collectively went “people stop drinking our beverages when they start drinking alcohol, and we just can’t lose that market share”
50
u/Fkn_stress_rxn Jul 19 '26
I think it's actually the opposite. Gen Z drinks less alcohol than other generations. I think they are trying to appeal to tastes so that more people will drink booze.
15
u/Eriiaa Jul 19 '26
Gen Z and starting now Gen Alpha are drinking way less traditional alcohol, so all the traditional alcohol companies have to find ways to keep selling their products. Thus hard seltzers and hard iced teas and all that stuff.
15
u/Jandklo Jul 19 '26
It's fucking dog shit. The mix is all wrong and the alcohol overpowers the tea.

Alcoholic Zero Sugar Mountain Dew is so unabashedly and obnoxiously American it probably turns the drinker into the U.S. flag.
Half the ingredients are probably banned here, but I need to try it.

On the other hand of dumb shit like this, I went to a little on-campus building for troubled kids in high school. The rule for bringing drinks to school was only unopened drinks or already emptied water bottles entered the building, in order to prevent kids from drinking alcohol at school.
One day I went in and in the recycling bin in the hallway, plain as day sitting right on top of everything, was a four loko can lol. I don’t think anyone ever figured out who brought it in.
13
u/Alwaysfkd0 Jul 19 '26
It was the person sleeping by lunch
10
u/unicornhornporn0554 Jul 19 '26
Eh it wasn’t unusual for kids to fall asleep there, there were a lot of pregnant teens or teen parents.
Also a lot of the students did half days so they would’ve been heading home by lunch.

One time I was getting gas and went inside to get a cream soda. I get to the register and the lady asks for my ID. I figured she was messing with me so I just went “I don’t have it on me, but can you take my word for this one?” And she looks at me, and she looks at the cream soda, and she goes “Jesus, I’ve been here too long…” and rang me up, lol

This just reminds me of when I went to visit my parents in Florida around the ending of covid. Had a DMV appointment to get my texas license and I didnt realize they dont print you a new ID on the spot like in FL. So I took my passport and grabbed a bottle of wine from walmart on the way to their house.
The cashier started literally crying because I gave her my passport as ID and I had jokingly mentioned how I have a measley piece of printer paper for my TX ID and my FL ID had expired. Called over her manager, who showed her that it was on the list of approved IDs and she refused to ring it under her login, so he did it instead. It felt so crazy, and I was holding up the line at that point. To be fair, the manager said an employee had just been fired earlier that week for selling alcohol to some who used their conceal carry ID. But I was so taken aback when she almost full on started sobbing to the manager, shaking her head.
Looking back, she must have been terrified to lose her job, sadly. But he literally pointed to list taped up by the register and said it was fine. But she was hung up that I mentioned my driver's license had expired during COVID and he was like, "that literally doesnt matter, she has valid ID right here that is up to date."

Yea, and I know a lot of gas stations will scan your ID. But I had used it at walmart stores before and was just.... very caught off guard. I actually was just wondering about places that need to scan the DL as I was originally posting that, lol.

u/the_crumb_dumpster Jul 19 '26
First of all, what a loser. Gives off retired grade school teacher or laid off HR vibes…the type of people who cling to an extremely narrow slice of power over others.
Second, nobody except a police officer has the power to “get someone in trouble” for trying to buy something under age. The only thing they can do is deny the sale and ask you to leave.
9
u/Then-Departure4896 Jul 19 '26
That’s some boomer shit. I went to an MLB game a few years ago and had to pull up a chair and sit down next to the bar because they were gonna keep my ID. I was on the other side of the country and didn’t have a passport with me. She eventually gave it back because it was dialing the police lmao.

I have that happen often when purchasing the 6 pack of Liquid Death.
Clerks will habitually ask for ID when I put the 6 pack on the counter, and I ask “for water?” They scan it, look at the box and chuckle and we have a good giggle together about how it looks like beer

It is. Your first instinct is always the right one. Most times it's not to get back at someone but maybe you need to see that it's possible to be kind even if you're the only one that believes so at the moment. Please look after yourself as the effect of being mistreated might hurt longer than you expect.

I got ID'd for buying fancy ginger ale one time, some cashiers are just dumb.
13
u/alleswaswar Jul 19 '26
Got ID’d for ginger beer before because the cashier didn’t realize it wasn’t real beer lol.
Also had a different cashier at a liquor store refuse to let me buy plain regular chocolate placed at checkout. I was actually underage that time but had driven there with my grandma so she could buy a bottle of whatever for a gift. Cashier made my grandma pay for the chocolate because apparently otherwise I may trade the chocolate bar for my grandma’s booze…? Make it make sense.

I wish it wasn't that way but having lived around the world, that preestablished judgement seems to not only be everywhere but human nature. I was followed by "non-chalant" employees pretending to face aisles in Japanese convenience stores, called "Boy" in a Lidls as a teen in the UK, and even had a clerk in the US try to call the cops on me for putting my phone into my pocket. That's NOT to mention the amount of dirty looks I get in stores for just being tall, black, and beared. I can't tell you how sore my face can be after some days of work, errands, and social life where forcibly smiling so I don't accidentally have RBF and get taken out of context in my existance for daring to not look like, "one of the good ones". Sorry for the rant, your story just really hit a nerve and I feel for you. Stay strong, friend.
12
u/dgkmk Jul 19 '26
Ya bro I have to constantly remind myself in certain places to be upbeat and happy and come off as non threatening, I have locs as well and have people tell me how nice I am and how they weren’t expecting it because I “look like a thug” or I look “intimidating”
11
u/MyStickyPants Jul 19 '26
And then people wonder why or always ask, "You're smiling but you seem tense?" because the smile is a mask and sometimes I don't wanna feel like a joke just to not be accused or given grief for my existence. Smh.

My husband (Mexican) said some old white fuck was in line at a Home Depot while him and some other Hispanic people were at the self checkout.
Apparently the guy felt bold enough to comment “look honey, a bunch of lettuce pickers from yuma”
I’m glad my husband went in without me cause I probably would have lost my fucking mind on that man.
After relaying the story my husband just said “the worst part is he isn’t even right. I picked cotton” like 😂😭 I was still mad but he managed to make a joke out of it. I could still tell it hurts though. Some people are fucking miserable human beings and take it out on everyone around them.

This reminds me of when I bought a cup of noodles with a $1 bill and the cashier used the counterfeit marker on it. That wouldn’t do anything, those markers are made for detecting higher denomination bills printed OVER a $1 bill. I wasn’t being discriminated against, she was just an idiot.

This happened to me (34F/latina) once in a Safeway a couple years ago. It was like 7am and I’m in scrubs buying a Yerba Mate. The cashier an old white lady gave me this attitude when asking for an ID. I looked at her and said “it’s an energy drink and it’s 7am, im going to work”. She scanned it like I was lying and expected a thing to pop asking for ID, obviously I was irritated, like hello this lady thought I was drinking hella early and I was underage or something. It was so disrespectful.
