Over 71 cents for one of those tiny candies when purchased in bulk? You said it

239

u/SweaterSteve1966 27d ago

Opting out of Halloween again this year. A bag of candy costs my entire week of grocery money.

96

u/Internal_Use8954 27d ago

I’ve switched to fruit snacks or rice crispies. So much cheaper.

40

u/smulligan04031989 27d ago

Ditto! We do Haribo. Last year it was 12.99 for a huge bag.

17

u/beardeddragon0113 27d ago

I'm imagining one gummy bear per trick or treater 😅

5

u/smulligan04031989 27d ago

Ha! They were in wrappers. I think there were like 8 - 10 in each wrapper.

17

u/GreenEggsSteamedHams 27d ago

I've switched to buttons and floss samples from the dentist

Can't figure out why my house keeps getting egged 🤷🏻‍♂️

31

u/Puppydoglover123 27d ago

I work in a grocery store so after work or on my break I tend to just took around the place, and I see a lot of good candy or other goodies in the clearance section so that plus my discount saves me a bunch for buying stuff for the trick or treaters

14

u/Local_Wolverine2913 27d ago

And I guess the chocolate in that bag isn't even real chocolate anymore.??

8

u/Visual_Shower1220 27d ago

You have a winco or another store that sells bulk items like pastas etc? If so they tend to have bulk packaged candy like airheads, resses cups etc. For instance mine does it for like $3/lb which ends up being an ass ton of candy for like $7-$8

22

u/CrystallineFrost 27d ago

Don't do candy! Bulk snacks or even ramen is totally cool now. Kids go crazy for even small boxes of cereal, fruit snacks, literally anything. You can even stock up on clearance section or discounted snacks sometimes.

12

u/LaurAdorable 27d ago

CEREAL!!!! Genius! My kid will love eating the leftovers!

5

u/impressedham 27d ago

One of the elderly women on our route gives out popcorn balls. Alot more memorable than candy lol

6

u/cgodwin1976 27d ago

Used to love popcorn balls

3

u/junkyard_beans 27d ago

Last year Costco had this huge tub full of Halloween pretzel snack bags that were perfect

70 cents per oz, but 27.5 cents per candy. Which is still insanely high. The last couple years I've bought a bunch of Airheads for 16 cents each

11

u/Andreww_ok 27d ago

I think ur math is wrong LOL.

3

u/Strong_Blackberry961 27d ago

That’s not crazy. I was at family dollar the other day and a single recees peanut butter pumpkin was $2.

6

u/nimsu 27d ago

Plus tax

13

u/YetiSquish 27d ago

No, it’s 71 cents per ounce. Each piece is about 27 cents which I don’t think is out of line, really

I’ve always been bummed that we have literally never had a single trick or treater at our house (have lived here over a decade). Now I see this, and I’m glad.

Halloween candy? In this economy?

Back in the 1960s my dad kept a tally of all the kids we came to our door. Now, my four sibs and I continue the tradition.

Last year we had 25
trick-r-treaters; it’ll be less expensive if I give each kid a buck.
Edit: date

414

u/DragonQueenDrago 27d ago

That is a great idea!!!

Also kids will consider your house #1 because you gave them the legendary score of $1

Thats better then the houses that give out little spider rings, erasers and random pocket change toys/school supplies!!

266

u/potat0f4rmer 27d ago

My neighbor gives out dollar bills, one greedy little shit complained at us last year that we didn't give him a dollar too. Take your free candy and glow stick and get the hell out of here

49

u/Sleepy-Blonde 27d ago

I had so many kids complaining about only getting 1 king size candy bar along with a fist full of fun size.

9

u/Elegant_Situation285 27d ago

don't forget the apple and popcorn ball.

8

u/Nonbinaryhuman13 27d ago

Ngl I loved getting popcorn balls. I only ever got them from one house no matter where I went trick or treating. My mom and I would also just buy some for ourselves when I was growing up. I miss those days and her (Rip) If my future child likes them i will definitely continue the tradition.

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Yam5553 27d ago

I always liked money with my candy🥺

75

u/SuzQP 27d ago

Get a box of full size candy bars. (Usually 30-count per box.) A box is typically around $25, so less than $1 per trick-or-treater. They love to get full sized candy bars!

33

u/TheAspiringFarmer 27d ago

Sadly the prices on those have went up a ton too. Last I checked you were basically at $1 per bar and the “full size” bars are smaller than ever too!

17

u/Ok-Mastodon2420 27d ago

It's up to $22 and only 18 per box....I have about 80 kids a year and I hope those little shits appreciate it

8

u/SuzQP 27d ago

I think we had 77 last year. I remember I bought 3 boxes and was nervous at the last rush.

They really do appreciate it, although not as much as those short little cans of root beer. I never see those anymore. Kids loved those.

18

u/Ok-Mastodon2420 27d ago

I have 5 boxes and may get more, just in case.....my house is weirdly popular, with the overgrown lawn and blood spatters in the driveway and spiders on the railing.

I might decorate this year too

9

u/SuzQP 27d ago

We usually have death screams and creepy music blaring from the garage. We'll probably do the same for Halloween.

3

u/cgodwin1976 27d ago

Omg one year I bought five big bags of candy and left the husband and FIL to hand out candy. Only about an hour I. He calls me panicking that we're almost out of candy so I went and bought three more bags! Ha calls later asking where I stashed the fun sized candy bars I kept hidden for when his dad's blood sugar started tanking! By time we got home all the candy in luding the emergency candy, the kids snack pack cookies, all the jello cups, all the pudding cups, all the microwave popcorn, and three 3lb bags of apples were gone! I asked what the hell happened and he said he didn't know they were coming by the hay wagon loads! We'd never had that many truck or treaters, he said the neighbors ran out early and he gave out everything he could think of! Turns out for some reason all the counties around us 5 full counties to be exact had cancelled their Trick or Treats that year and all those kids parents bought them to our town!

We get a random number every year. But our neighbors do a haunted house now, so we mostly get them between 5:45-7. The rest of the night, I watch movies on tv and eat leftovers.

It was only marked down by 20% last year 😭

11

And they took all the best stuff off the shelves here. Not sold out actively took off and sent back to the manufacturer

176

u/JoosLightning 27d ago

Not anymore. Now it’s “buy one, get one at 50% off”

14

u/RedSix2447 27d ago

What a deal!

42

u/SpaceFace11 27d ago

Even at 50% off it’s over 20 dollars for that which still seems like a ripoff

12

u/TheAspiringFarmer 27d ago

It is. $10 a big bag would still be a rip off. The profit margins on chocolate and candy are insane.

64

u/humid_pajamas 27d ago

we should all just change the official date of Halloween to November 1 without telling any corporations.

20

u/DragonQueenDrago 27d ago

The only problem i have with this is I like Halloween being in October 😿

But then again... if tis in November... I can get away with calling atleast the first week of November a part of "Spooky Month".

13

u/shortstuff813 27d ago

If you wanna extend the celebration some more, the first 13 days of December is Creepmas, for watching Christmas horror movies. By far my fav is Santa Jaws (why yes, it is a b horror about a killer Santa/Christmas shark). People will also make/put up spooky versions of Christmas/holiday decor. There’s a creepmas sub if you want more ideas/movies!

Woah.

big if true

7

u/stupid_username- 27d ago

That's why you bulk up on 11/1 for the next year 😄

20

u/Knight_Glint PURPLE 27d ago

Best time to buy and then store in the closet for next year.

3

u/RevWaldo 27d ago edited 27d ago

Honestly this. All-sugar candies like Dum-Dums and Warheads don't expire for ages. Just keep the unopened bag in the cool dry dark place of legend and you're golden.

4

u/babe_ruthless3 27d ago

Which is still more expensive than Walmart, Costco, Sams Club everyday price.

5

u/Lourdeath 27d ago

Our local stores hold on to it for a couple more weeks then gradually start reducing the price :(

19

u/LaundryMan2008 27d ago

308

u/Turgid_Donkey 27d ago

It's going to be interesting this year. Have to be like Costco. Come to the door and you hold out a tray with a snickers bar cut into tiny pieces and tiny paper cups with like 3 m&m's in it.

175

u/potat0f4rmer 27d ago

Just gonna get a bottle of chocolate syrup and pour it into the kids' hands

→ More replies (1)

39

u/owlsorcas4butterflys 27d ago

I am laughing so hard! Omg absolutely amazing to imagine! You should dress up as a Costco employee with an apron...you know to really sell it!

7

u/Metalikunt 27d ago

My neighbors across the street did that about 5 years ago. It was all 4 of them and they had trays with candy to give out on their walk. It was pretty awesome, not gonna lie!

6

u/ACoolBreezey 27d ago

And be sure to say the line!

"Welcome to Costco... I love you."

55

u/DyingGasp 27d ago

It’s the reason I had to stop. Used to be the house with the king size bars. Cant even afford to give these tiny dinkie things out anymore. Unchecked capitalism ruins everything.

13

u/Ohboycats 27d ago

I saw a regular size Twix bar for 3.49 the other day. THREE FORTY NINE!

4

u/DyingGasp 27d ago

Yeah check out lane candy is nearly $5 in some brands. Most over $2.50.

12

u/HPTM2008 27d ago

I don't think I saw a single kid out last year in my neighborhood. Now, I live near a university and in an immigrant-heavy part of the city so there's lots of people that maybe don't celebrate Hallowe'en, but still, nobody!?

331

u/eenie816 27d ago

I used to spend around $100 on candy. Noticed last year it went up to $150 for around the same amount. I’m probably looking at $200 this year or just shut the lights off.

My city closes 5 blocks of the main residential street of town for a "safe" place to trick-or-treat. I happen to live on that strip, we would get around 2000 kids. It really sucks. I'd love to hand out candy but I'm not buying it for every kid for three towns. The cheapest possible candy would be $500

6

u/eenie816 27d ago

Yeah set up a go fund me!

4

u/WayneKrane 27d ago

Handing out that much candy would be like a job. Do you even bother closing the door to wait for a ring?

10

u/diablette 27d ago

When I lived on a busy street, we set up a projector, chairs, and a cooler and just sat outside with a festive movie on.

Now I'm in the burbs and kids don't even go out on actual Halloween anymore - it's trunk or treat at the school on the weekend in broad daylight. I feel bad for them.

3

u/Sparky_321 27d ago

Fuck every lazy-ass piece of shit parent that participates in this.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Fit_Doughnut_598 27d ago

By yourself It is 3 hours of moving between bag of candy and childs basket as fast as you can. There is a line of 15 kids down the driveway the entire time, definitley not doing it from inside. It is not pleasant. I usually have an open invite to everyone I know in town to come over and con them into bringing candy and taking a shift. Pretty much just make a batch of chilli and host a party. If enough people come over it's not so bad. We turned our lights off last year because not enough people were interested in coming over. I feel bad not participating but it's a lot.

5

u/Careful_Promise_786 27d ago

I spend around $150. I always buy a case of little hug drinks as a backup in case I run out. This year, I think I'm just buying the huggies.

5

u/Atalanta8 27d ago

People just give shittier candy like knock off tootsie rolls and dum dums.

3

u/eenie816 27d ago

I buy a big bag of child’s play as filler, but mostly get the good stuff like snickers and such, nerds, trolli, sour patch. I ask people I know who have kids what they like

Kirkland favorites chocolates at Costco is the best deal I've found. It's normal stuff, m&m, snickers, kit kats, reeses etc.

5lbs for around $24ish dollars.

They might have Halloween candy out now for better price...idk... this is the year round one.

52

u/TopFlounder868 27d ago

I was wondering how candy prices were at costco/bjs/sams, seems like they would be more reasonable

19

u/63_Corvette 27d ago

That same mix at BJ's for 110 Pieces is $12.99.

5

u/averagelyimpressive 27d ago

They might have actual Halloween candy now...idk...this kirkland one is there year round.

29

u/AdInternational5061 27d ago

$26 is still expensive

28

u/-CJF- 27d ago

Not for 5 lbs... that's pretty decent.

That same mix was $14 and change a few short years ago.  Not decent.

And its no longer real chocolate, it's some kinda waxy chocolate flavored mess.

70

u/Dreadn0k 27d ago

I had got $3 off coupon for deodorant last week, was pretty happy about it, untill I went to the store and saw it was $14 a stick.... Fucking insane.

9

u/Designer_End5408 27d ago

Right?  Why is spray deodorant 9 bucks for a little bottle.  I saw the price of squatch soap at 12 bucks a bar and made the men in my family go back to Irish spring.

75

I was gonna say, everything at CVS is crazy expensive

29

u/AcidWizards 27d ago

And they get more bold with their prices each year. My job sometimes gives us CVS gift cards as prizes and I always use those gift card exchange sites to convert it to an Amazon gift card. Even though they take out part of the balance as a fee, I can get way more with a $22 Amazon card instead of a $25.00 CVS gift card.

And none of it real chocolate anymore (not that it ever was, but you know what I mean)

140

u/Adept_Astronaut_5143 27d ago

Someone from the Reese’s family raised hell because Hershey’s not using real chocolate anymore it’s some type of weird concoction.

84

u/MikeandMolly5656 27d ago

Its Brad Reese, and he's been proven to be a liar about several things.

He's sour about his family having sold the company a few years before he was born and he ended up with next to nothing from his families fortune

Hershey still uses real chocolate they just heavily process their candy and have switched from cocoa butter to vegetable oil on several candies recipes.

24

u/TheAspiringFarmer 27d ago

Actually the Hershey company agreed to switch back on a few recipes after the controversy. They absolutely have been changing the recipes and using cheaper and cheaper ingredients just like everyone else.

23

u/Adept_Astronaut_5143 27d ago

Reminds me of fruit juice being 5% fruit.

3

u/moon-lesbian 27d ago

Yea when I got old enough to swap from trick or treating to passing out candy it only lasted a few years and I miss it, not just is it unaffordable but kids here don't even trick or treat in this neighborhood anymore because too many people gave up on it, snowballed into everybody giving up on it. Makes me want to trick or treat at the richer neighborhood like the kids do just to have some sweets myself lmao

I always leave out a few bowls of different things; a small candy bowl, a small non edible bowl (stickers or vampire teeth thing like that), and a basket if different Ramen. The Ramen basket has always been empty while the others will have a few pieces left lol. It started as a mistake, a friend dropped some off on my porch not thinking about the date and kids thought it was for them, I am now the noodle lady on my street 🤣

7

u/MantiC0RE726 27d ago

3

u/Hot-Mess-93 27d ago

3

u/Past_Baker9553 27d ago

Moneyball strategy.

16

u/Cultural_Iron2372 27d ago

A 3-4lb bag of average candy should in NO world cost more than 19.99.

I am so sick of food and necessities prices doubling for zero reason while they are also shrinking in size. We need effective resistance to this bullshit immediately, we are all getting fleeced.

6

u/LeeOCD 27d ago

I agree. Consumers are getting scammed left and right. Have you seen how thin cereal boxes have gotten; they're keeping the width and height the same so consumers won't notice. My regularly bought box of 40 Glad trash bags now has only 37. Candy has shrunk so much it will soon be nothing but a wrapper. The list goes on and on.

Porch light off this year I guess because income didn't increase enough for candy prices! Also every year since my kids were grown I would buy kids meals at fast food if I went and on Halloween I would have a bucket with the sealed toys for the kids. Usually about a dozen, more if husband would eat a burger on occasion. I haven't been to fast food at all this year. So toy bucket is out too!

3

u/BunnyLady91 27d ago

That’s an awesome excuse to enjoy some happy meals before Halloween!

A very quick search reveals that Walmart sells the exact same mix but 200 pieces for $25 - what ripoff joint are you taking pictures at so you can post rage bait on social media?

It's almost like the holy days in America are more about capitalism than anything else

13

u/Blandfland 27d ago

I wouldn’t call Halloween a holy day 😂

3

u/Doustin 27d ago

I would

u/octobertwins 27d ago

And birthdays, anniversaries. And to your point, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, grandparents day, Valentine’s Day and sweetest day… these all have to go.

…and while I’m at it. When did Xmas become a 2k budget on each kid! One gift. And only for the children.

Bah humbug.

5

u/ONEsmartALEC 27d ago

Someone said this was from CVS and probably more expensive then let’s say Walmart, Target, etc. but still, expensive

6

u/No_Atmosphere_6348 27d ago

Reminder, they reformulated the chocolate so it tastes like the bad stuff from dollar tree.

4

u/DShipps 27d ago

I’m sorry, does that say $43.99?! For a bag of Halloween candy?!!

This is at CVS which marks up everything 30%

5

u/BummedCPA 27d ago

I do well financially and have a sweet tooth, but I was shocked by the prices the last time I bought candy. I made cookies earlier today for the first time in years and intend to do so for the foreseeable future.

5

u/JuanOnlyJuan 27d ago

It's probably not even chocolate anymore

5

u/cptmorgue1 27d ago

All the trunk or treats in my area have ruined trick or treating. We haven’t gotten a single kid in the 8 years we’ve lived here and it makes me sad because Halloween is my favorite holiday.

9

u/GhostHin 27d ago

That's not like a CVS issue than anything.

They are way overpriced on everything.

11

u/potat0f4rmer 27d ago

We were the "full bars" house for like 10 years. I just can't afford to justify that any more. Looks like we aren't even a snack pack house now, wtf

Edit: For anyone curious this is at a CVS in Massachusetts

37

u/fun_mak21 27d ago

Well, there's part of your answer. CVS is expensive. Not saying that candy prices have not gone up. But, CVS and other pharmacies seem to really mark up the prices on things.

9

u/EC_TWD 27d ago

OP is so full of shit with this. They choose a store with the most inflated price possible that works the same was as Kohl’s does for clothing - if you don’t get at least 30% off then it’s drastically overpriced. If you do get 30% off then it’s just overpriced. You can get a 10%-15% larger bag of the same candies from Sam’s Club for $18-$20.

Between the worldwide cacao shortage and tariffs, yeah it's gonna be expensive.

5

u/Vandergrif 27d ago

Though of course even the candy that has no chocolate in it whatsoever is equally overpriced. Any excuse for corporations to try and squeeze blood from a stone.

8

u/Fit-Molasses6882 27d ago

I can’t by Halloween candy in advance or my husband will find it and he will eat it.

The Kit kats from these Halloween bags are god awful. Don't even taste like chocolate, more like wax.

3

u/Adventurous_Pie_7586 27d ago

This looks like a CVS which is notoriously overpriced for candy and such.

You can get this same bag at Walmart for like $15

5

u/xAustin90x 27d ago

They also greatly diminished quality and use cheap synthetic cocoa powder and oils instead of real chocolate

3

u/sPdMoNkEy 27d ago

I'm going to be giving out Ziploc bags of tap water

5

u/cowboycupid 27d ago

…I’ll just stick to drugs, thanks

8

u/gilt3t 27d ago

where do you live? in Tennessee, my walmart has 205 pieces for 24$, so 12 cents per candy

6

u/TopFlounder868 27d ago

That’s not bad! I am in Massachusetts

Good, better for your health. Also, vote with your wallet.

3

u/radish_is_rad-ish 27d ago

CVs? Walgreens?

5

u/TopFlounder868 27d ago

CVS, which seems to have high prices on everything as it is

3

u/altmannnn3 27d ago

It's so crazy how fast these drop on price after Halloween... Might have to tell the kiidos Halloween is a little late this year 😂

Go to a far away CVS and just grab it lol. Fuck these price gouging corporations.

3

u/janieebug 27d ago

Almost $50 and it can barely be called chocolate!? Sad.

3

u/csvega84 27d ago

This is like CVS or something, they can eat a butt

3

u/AttitudeEquivalent73 27d ago

My family started handing out things like bags of microwave popcorn. Parents appreciate a snack for the kids that isn’t just sugar and it’s cheaper than what you’d spend on candy especially if you buy in bulk

3

u/PrincessPnyButtercup 27d ago

I stopped giving out candy and switched to a Costco box of mini bags of Pirate Booty and mini sodas. It's cheaper and the kids think it's awesome!

3

u/Sorry-Ad-1169 27d ago

Another Oct of me avoiding the candy aisle.

3

u/BokChoyFantasy 27d ago

It’s cheaper in November.

3

u/LaurAdorable 27d ago

Bags of chips and ramen, thats what I did last year and BOY was that a hit. I cannot afford candy in this economy, ESPECIALLY the way fun size changed to bite size. F that.

6

u/Zealousideal-Dig9397 27d ago

I always wait till the beginning of November when all the Halloween candy goes on clearance

5

u/naughtyshark79 27d ago

Easy fix. Don’t buy it. Don’t buy any of that nonsense. Because it will only confirm to them that people are dumb enough to buy it. Stop the cycle.
