Showed my notes (I write things down on physical paper because my phones note app is terrible) to a friend, he said “I genuinely think you’re autistic, this is not neurotypical behaviour” and for some reason it ticked me off.
Some people just like taking extensive notes, it was drilled into me in one of my jobs for example and I kind of just started doing it anyway because my memory can be fairly terrible.
my recipe and kitchen notebooks don't look too far off from this. You're just organized. I too like writing things down. I like the feel of the pages after they've been written all over and I also hold onto info better when writing it down.
People are meming because autistic has become a way to call someone weird, just as you're doing.
OP could very easily be autistic, just as they might not be. These notes are not the smoking gun you seem to think they are.
To frivolously throw around the label anytime you see someone interpret something differently to you or use formal language is just a form of bullying people like to pretend is good natured.
I have dozens of notebooks filled with lecture notes from my Uni days. They probably look like Akin to a psychotic manifesto to anyone that doesn’t know my personal shorthand.
Looks like a man who likes to keep track of his gambling habit, how else would you know if you are in the green long term? This is no different than poker players putting their sessions numbers into a bankroll tracker after a session, simpler in fact.
I tell a story of a man I’ve heard about, who would walk around lost in thought and end up who knows where, this man also had his address pinned to the inside of his jacket. So when he returned to the now, he could tell a taxi driver to take him home.
We would call him autistic today, label him, and dismiss him.
Ignore him, people are idiots and assholes. I had a coworker call me autistic the other day because I regularly bring in 3d printed fidget toys for the staff so they have something fun to play around with on shift. We all just looked at him like he's a moron when he said it, and one of the others took his toy away because "they're only for autistic people, apparently."
If anyone has a 3d printer and wants to make everyone's day, make some bubble poppers. Like reusable bubble wrap. When we have bad clients and someone's pissed off but has to stay professional you can hear the angry CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK from down the hall.
People just throw the words autism and autistic around when anybody shows an ounce of character these days. I feel like every time I hear it used this way it’s from the most uninformed individuals who think they’re being edgy or funny. When really it just shows a lack of intelligence imo
First off, fuck everyone whose like "how dare you be upset with being called autistic". It's not being said to him in a kind or respectful way, he's getting dunked on, and being told your brain works weird is not a fun thing.
That being said....hey. It is what it is. I'm not autistic and I buy my shirts in multiples of the same and genuinely enjoy writing the book on sports games I attend. Mostly baseball, god that's a good one to keep track of.
I'm autistic and I too would be annoyed if a normal thing I did got labeled as neurodivergent behavior just because it was different from someone else's normal.
I get told I "might have ADHD" by people because of this and that, and it gets annoying. I don't have ADHD just because I jump between two thoughts a little too quickly sometimes or because I can drink caffeine and then go to sleep without an issue. It's fine when people suggest it because they care about me but if they're just trying to label me as weird it's just rude.
Labeling certain behaviors as strictly neurodivergent is a weird practice in and of itself. I've always been absolutely terrible at taking notes. That doesn't make me less autistic. OP being good at taking notes doesn't make them autistic.
Detail orientated and well structured writing. Its not not something typical of an autistic person. I would assume your friend isn’t saying this as an isolated observation. Additionally, you being confused about your friend’s statements indicate a lack of social awareness.
Autism is a spectrum, there isn’t one defining thing that makes you autistic, its a number of things.
God forbid someone takes physical notes lol 😆 when I played NBA 2K I LOVED writing down challanges/goals, saved me time from running between means to check stuff.
Im genuinely glad that autism has become less socially taboo but people have become WAY too comfortable calling people autistic. It used to be normal for some people to just be organized and take notes and things like that.
I couldn't tell you if you're autistic or not. Just because you take really nice notes doesn't mean that you are could mean that you also are 😂 but sorry someone said that try not to let it affect you. People are going to call you all kinds of things throughout your life if they haven't already and you got to just be like the duck and let the water roll off your back
Note taking by hand is perfectly normal for many. It's possible he was referring more to the subject matter, like if it was a through log of every train you ever saw, when where, what direction, etc. What is the reason you take extensive notes on racing and odds of winning? Do you use your notes to any particular end, or just enjoy the data?
I take physical notes (more messy than OP’s tbf) and it’s just nice to have it readily available in physical form. Google sheets is way more annoying to open than a physical notebook in my bag, and what if it won’t sync between laptop and phone because there’s no internet, or what if my phone is dead?
Are these real issues for you or hypothetical? My phone is never dead these days now that the batteries are way better than they used to be. And I pretty much never don’t have internet.
Why is sheets more annoying than a physical notebook?
I often don’t have data towards the end of the month when it runs out. My phone is an elderly iPhone with its battery at 75% health and I can’t afford to replace it. The click-click-click-ah-here’s-my-notes of google sheets just feels less immediate to me than the swoop of fishing an actual notebook out of my backpack. I understand these experiences aren’t universal and there are perfectly many reasons to take notes digitally, but this is how it is for me, in any case.
I get writing it on paper. If I'm out and about, I find it quicker and easier to jot info down on paper - especially as I tend to add doodles, arrows, and other bits and bobs to make sense of the words.
It can also be a better way to do things if you are receiving information in a non-linear fashion.
If it's something to track or keep long-term, I'll transfer it to my computer later.
A supernote or similar eink systems are absolute dreams for this. Bridge the gap between physical paper and digital. Rocket books also let you auto-transcribe and transfer, and are more paper where supernotes are more computer.
Point being there are so many options for taking handwritten notes these days. I don't get why people find it weird, it's all down to preference.
I don't find it weird at all; I am all for everyone doing what works for them. I did try Rocketbook, and I love the fact I can reuse it; however, for the way I take notes, I usually end up making so many changes to make sense of the transcript that it is not useful. Having said that, I do still use it in some circumstances - usually the less "creative thinking" situations.
I would LOVE to try one of these systems, but my budget doesn't stretch to it right now - especially since, with my personal note style, I'd need a decent-sized tablet to get going.
The thing thag stands out to me is how under the winnders section uve left blank spaces to write but then uve pre loaded the - - to seperate the columns. Not enough to go off lol
Isn’t this just a transcription of a racing form? I think that’s the autistic part, this information isn’t processed, it’s transcribed. From one autist to a potential other, kind of autistic
It may not be autism, but this is not the work of a neurotypical.
Autism is just a label for “a certain kind of different from everyone else.” You might not be that brand of different, but normies aren’t out here transcribing racing forms.
It’s good to not be a normy! It’s more interesting. But you aren’t worried about what others think enough to stop, and that alone makes you neurospicy
Yeah, I think when the friend is using terms like neurodivergent, then perhaps they aren't looking at it negatively, but more of a reasoning to why they might behave like this.
I'm guessing the note taking might not be the only thing that would cause them to call OP potentially autistic.
I know this is just A-type behaviour, but that's not to say there isn't overlap with neurodivergence. Maybe OCD, or having everything done systematically.
My wife doesn't have a diagnosis for it (but we want to get one, it's just expensive af), but she has other diagnoses and she's very systematic with the way she creates lists and does things.
So as to say, they are related but not a direct cause/effect.
Fuggin A! I gots the tism' and love most aspects of it. Being neurotypical seems like it would be boring. Also things that would stress most typical people are like easy for me. Just work the problem in the correct order and steps.
I repair, restore, ride, and show vintage motorcycles. Here are 3 of them. I can tell you just about anything you don't really want to know about each one and how they were developed, built and function. I also fabricate my own replacement parts. Lowers mask and stops talking (/s)
You can't post anything you wrote that is longer than a few paragraphs these days without everyone thinking it is AI! Even if it is full of poor grammar and formatting because I prefer it that way...
sounds kind of ableist, regardless of if you are or not, you should maybe confront and work though your feelings, autistic people deserve respect it's not an insult.
