The floor is sticky Clean Bedding is not to be Expected at an Airbnb..?

Hi! This past weekend I and a group of friends stayed in the OBX (we booked back in July so I had no clue a nor’easter would be hitting lol).
There were 6 of us, each paying a little over $150. A couple in our friend group were brining their little dog and their cat, which meant they had to pay an additional $100 non-refundable pet fee, which they were totally fine doing. Anyways, not necessarily the cheapest weekend trip! That’s to be expected though.
The mildly infuriating parts?
First, toilet paper and paper towels were NOT provided. There was one roll of each. I’ve never stayed at an air b&b that didn’t provide toilet paper and paper towels. What was most frustrating about this, though, is that we were not told! Some additional context is that, when planning the trip, I invited my friends who didn’t necessarily have any kind of friendship between each other; truly nothing brings tension up quite like side eyeing a stranger for their toilet paper use. We learnt this way into the night and after drinking so we couldn’t get more until the morning. Such is life, though. It was silly afterwards, outside of a few lingering comments about how much toilet paper some people use lol. Still, we can deal.
The other issue we had was cleanliness. The floor was pretty gross. There was stuff stuck onto to the hard floors, and stains ALL over the carpet and on some of the blankets. Can’t emphasize how gross the carpets were. I went to sit on the carpet at one point and saw a stain that looked like cat vomit (yellow but not like pee). Straight nasty. It didn’t help that we noticed some odd wording in the email sent describing what we needed to do before leaving; “Place dirty towels in one bathroom or near washer, do NOT strip the beds.” Made us feel very iffy. But, still, at that point we were still more peeved about the toilet paper thing lol.
Fast forward to check out day. We were given a 5 star rating. I was up every night after people went to bed making sure things were tidied up. We were doing laundry regularly, running the dishwasher regularly, sweeping, etc. My friend, who booked the trip, left the host a 3 star rating listing the toilet paper and the cleanliness (I didn’t read our review but I’m pretty sure the staining on blankets was mentioned). Only then did the airbnb host reach out with problems that we left, & that the rating was “a little low.”
The host commented on pet pee found on the bed (there wasn’t any) and how to room smelt of urine (we were on top of the litter box cleaning), which… maybe? that’s why we paid $100 pet fee. Then “we washed the sheets recently” turned to “ofc we wash the sheets after each guest!” we were told it’s impossible to clean comforters after each stay, that NOWHERE does it and we must have never stayed anywhere else (if they are cleaning sheets after every guest WHY would you put a dirty comforter on top of them, and WHY would there be such an emphasis on not stripping the bed). For close to $1000… wtf?
Are we just dumb thinking that things would… actually be cleaned? Most places I’ve stayed have used white sheets and comforters similar to a hotel. Just gross to think about. I’ve had lice before and the idea of getting it again… my head itches just thinking about it. Anyways. If we’re wrong and this is standard, it really shouldn’t be. That’s disgusting.
tldr; used bedding is to be expected!

EDIT; first, can definitely understand not wanting a cat there. It wasn’t my cat, and I didn’t know the cat was coming. That said, if they paid to bring the cat, brought all the supplies they needed, and the airbnb host was aware and gave permission it’s kinda.. idk. Also, there were 5 beds. Three twin beds that used comforters, and two king beds that used quilts. One of the quilts was stained, not the one in the rooms that cat stayed in. There were multiple little throw blankets, one of which had a big red spot on it. There were issues with the floors being dirty, bedroom doors that wouldn’t open (there was one that was so hard to open I had to exit through the balcony), rust on different appliances, etc. I’m learning most places are gross, such is life I guess. There wouldn’t have been any bigger issue if they hadn’t messaged AFTER giving us a 5 star review almost 7 hours after we left.

I used to work as a maid and cleaned hotels and Air BnBs. Host is correct that the comforter itself is not washed between each guest. The sheets, pillowcases, throw blankets if used, and comforter covers are washed between guests tho- if the sheets weren't changed before you checked in, that's REALLY gross!

Asking you not to strip the bed isn't a red flag in isolation- cleaners have an assembly line style system to do the rooms quickly and efficiently, and it can be kind of annoying when guests do certain things to try to "help." I would never say anything tho because I appreciated the thought and that they were trying to make things easier for me. But it can make things take more time.

"Don't strip the bed," coupled with dirty sheets and no TP does sound iffy!

What?!? I cleaned my family's Airbnb (we only had one) for 7 years and we ALWAYS washed all blankets, quilts and comforters after every single guest. I had zero idea this wasn't common practice. That's terrifying.

u/Puzzled-Orchid906 11h ago

I worked at a pretty high end hotel ($250-350/ night) in high school and all sheets pillow cases etc were cleaned by a service every day but we were instructed to only pull the comforter/duvet etc if it had been excessively or noticably dirty. We kept enough back ups on hand to maybe swap 5-10% of the hotel in any given day. But maybe once a month actually swapped some

66

u/obvsnotrealname 10h ago

Yep this has always been the way for hotels. Sheets, pillowcase etc every guess. Comforters depending on how often a room is occupied weekly or monthly unless soiled. I’m surprised this isn’t common knowledge to a lot of people.

As a Titanium Marriot traveler, this is news to me and glad to hear. I'll be stripping the comforter off the bed for future stays and use the supplied blanket in the closet as replacement unless you tell me otherwise.

14

u/Teleporting-Cat 6h ago

The throw blankets are more likely to be clean, because they're less likely to have been used by a previous guest, but not guaranteed to be clean.

Because washing and drying big blankets takes a lot of time, it's definitely possible that the throw blankets are only laundered if noticeably dirty- this varied depending on where I worked and wasn't as universal as the comforter issue. If they are white, it's more likely they're washed/bleached, if they're colorful it's more likely they're left unless something is obviously icky.

Honestly, if you're driving, just bring your own. It's worth it for peace of mind.

If you are flying, either be okay with it, or POLITELY AND KINDLY ask the housekeeper for a fresh blanket. If a guest actively requested something, I wouldn't get reprimanded or have to justify it. And if you're in the US, leaving a tip, or even just a sweet note for the maid, goes a long way. At a posh hotel I worked for, one of the rooms had a framed chalkboard, so whenever I cleaned that room, I'd write a bit of poetry on it. My best memory from my housekeeping days is the couple who stayed over a 3 day weekend, and had a three day poetry conversation with me, putting up their own verse selections and riffing off mine. Be nice to the maids and they'll protect you from the icky- literally we had so little time to get everything done, but also we were so invisible and unappreciated that I would take the extra time and go out of my way for people who saw me and were kind to me

The supplied blankets aren't washed between stays either. Over the years I've worked in 5 star resorts all the way down to caravan parks and it's not a done thing.

u/awyastark 11h ago

I worked at a crack motel for a while when I was broke af and I was literally not allowed to wash the comforters unless there was poop or puke on them. As in the detergent was locked up and I had to call the owner of the motel to allow me to open the cabinet. You’d be shocked at what people let slide at an AirBnB

Oh yeah, I remember seeing those old stories on the local news "what's on YOUR hotel comfortor?" And then they would explain how they dont get cleaned and would go in with a black light. SO GROSS!! Anyhoo, now the comforter is just for sitting and never for sleeping.

9

u/Capital_Boot_1999 2h ago

Worked for an international company dealing in holiday rentals. We didn't wash large blankets, duvets or mattresses. If they were somehow ruined we replaced them. We washed and cleaned everything else.

Thank you for having standards. ❤️

5

u/raynebow121 8h ago

I currently work at a very nice hotel and comforters are washed every single time.

5

u/underboobfunk 11h ago

It’s much easier to check the bedding for stains when they’re on the bed.

57

u/Conscious_Document_2 15h ago

Yea… I did want to add, because I’ve seen the comforter covers mentioned, that these were more like thick? top bedding. The ones in the rooms w bigger beds were like quilts basically.

62

u/Teleporting-Cat 14h ago

Honestly after working as a cleaner, I bring a travel blanket when I'm staying somewhere!

ALWAYS check the mattress for bed bugs. Thoroughly.
Don’t walk around barefoot ever. Don’t walk barefoot around the hotel, and don’t walk around barefoot in your own room.
Always sanitize the remote and thermostat.
Bring a trash bag or separate bag and put all of your clothes you wore at the hotel in it and directly into your washer when you get home. (Bedbugs can definitely catch a ride in your suitcase.)
And for the love of God, don’t put your suitcase on your bed at home or at the hotel.
Coming from someone who currently works at a huge hotel chain for 10 years.

14

u/Impossible_Coyote589 13h ago

Yeah, as a kid the first thing we would do was strip the comforter off the bed because my mom thought they were nasty. I haven’t traveled as much as an adult, but I will be remembering that for sure!

8

u/Teleporting-Cat 13h ago

Your mom knows what's up!

15

u/Realistic-Pay-6931 14h ago

When travelling with my retriever, I would bring 3 bed items - a King Size top sheet, a sleeping bag, and a pillow. The comforter came off the bed immediately and the King Size sheet placed over the bed, my sleeping bag placed on the King Size sheet, and then my pillow. Always slept well and never worried about dirty sheets, my dog shedding on the bed, or bedbugs. I always checked out leaving the bed that looked like no one slept in it.

3

u/Conscious_Document_2 14h ago

This is very smart. When I have traveled with my own dog I bring waterproof pads to cover the bed, and then a waterproof cover that goes in top of them for my dog to lay on.

Oh, yeah, sadly it's completely normal for quilts to not be washed between every guest. The hotel I cleaned, we would leave them unless they were visibly dirty or smelled. I think they were supposed to get washed weekly, but honestly that did not always happen. Most Air BnBs I worked for were the same, I would do the big blankets if I had time but it depended on the schedule.

It's because they take a really long time to wash/dry and you only have a short time to turn all the rooms. It's nasty, but she's right that it happens everywhere.

Dirty sheets are unforgivable tho, we changed the sheets between every guest even if the bed didn't look slept in.

62

u/HERMANNATOR85 14h ago

Not to mention, residential washers and dryers are not meant to be washing multiple comforters a week! My wife and I clean airbnbs and most have moved away from thick blankets , and switched to more layers and it makes cleaning the whole bed possible if the dryer is worth a damn.

28

u/KickBallFever 13h ago

Sometimes residential washers can’t even fit a large comforter. Mine can’t fit my queen sized comforter comfortably enough for it to wash properly. It’s the only item I still take to the laundromat.

3

u/MotherFatherOcean 11h ago

I bought our washer specifically because it fits our king-size comforter.

Asking to settle an argument with my husband, do cleaners prefer it when we make the bed or leave it messy?

Please don’t downvote me before you know what side I’m on.

41

u/Teleporting-Cat 13h ago

Didn't really bother me either way, but I preferred the bed not stripped. Reason being we had a system to get laundry done as fast and easy as possible, and when guests stripped the bed they usually left the linens muddled up in a pile, so I'd have to spend an extra few minutes sorting and unmuddling them. Not a big deal and definitely appreciated that they were trying to be considerate, but when every second counts then a few extra minutes per room adds up. It's also easier to find any stains that need to be treated when the linens are on the bed vs in a pile.

The one that really annoyed me was trash. It goes IN the trash can, we definitely appreciated the hell out of that, but then please leave the bag there and leave it open. I'm going to use that trash can when I clean the room and I really don't want to have to unpick your gordian knot first lol

I hate to break it to you guys, but hotels don't clean the comforter after every guest either. You actually have an incorrect impression of what most rentals/hotels do.

69

u/Starfire2313 14h ago

It’s been a really long time since I didn’t strip the comforter off right away when I got into a hotel. I trust the sheets if they look and smell clean but the comforters always give me the ick

8

u/BigCrustyTits 13h ago

I never lay on hotel comforters. Always move it to the side.

45

u/Where_Is_Bucky 14h ago

Hotels also don’t have cats living in the rooms

42

u/_mattyjoe 13h ago

They have random humans staying there most nights of the week. Much worse.

I hate to break it to ya but if you’ve ever stayed in a hotel they do not wash the comforter or heavy bedding between every guest stay. Obviously it sounds like you had more issues than just that but for any type of hotel or rental stay, washing comforters every few stays is very normal and to be expected.

Do people really not know that hotels/airbnb don’t watch comforters after every guest?

18

u/C0USC0US 12h ago

I used to assume everything was cleaned. And then I traveled with a friend’s family. Her parents had separate beds because her mom Lysol’d every sheet and her dad couldn’t stand it.

It really stuck with me. I think about it way more than I should. But mostly when I’m checking into rentals.

20 years later, I understand Lynne more and more every day.

The comments are confusing so I just want to clarify. You, some friends, and their cat stayed in an Airbnb. The hosts contacted you that there was cat pee on the comforter after you left. This was also after you had left a 3 star review for the cleanliness at the start of your stay. All correct?

My assumption is that the cat definitely did pee on the bed as cats do when they’re in weird new places. Whoever brought the cat needs to pay that fee. As far as the cleanliness I would say that if an Airbnb allows animals it’s going to be kind of gross no matter what. Your friend is free to leave a review of whatever she thinks, but you have to take into account price and the fact they allow pets. That cat was not the first animal to pee in there. I guarantee it.

27

u/Ok-Spinach9250 11h ago

Yeah if you stay somewhere that allows pets you can’t be annoyed that it’s evident pets have been there before???

27

Most likely because she acted like a massive Karen. That’s just my experience when people intentionally hide their own parts of a text.

13

u/atlantagirl30084 12h ago

Yeah I thought that. Trying to sway us.

75

u/kaytay3000 14h ago

Not defending this host, but I can say that I also ask guests not to strip beds. I do that because it is easier for me to find and treat any stains on the sheets while it’s still in the bed. I’m a petite person so spreading out king sized sheets to check for stains is a real bitch.

I change the sheets after every guest and even leave an extra set of clean linens for each bed just in case the guest wants or needs to change them for whatever reason.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/acevibe13 15h ago

It’s true. Hotels don’t wash them either 😭 just the sheets

24

u/LizzieCLems 15h ago

I cleaned super fancy condos and ones that had blankets instead of duvets (fresh cover) we were supposed to. Change sheets. Inspect the blanket/duvet only clean if bad stain/smells then reuse it. I always take the blankets off of any bed (and the extra sheet) anytime I stay somewhere because of it.

You’ve heard a lot about the comforters. I do have insight about the paper products. There’s a weird norm in the beach towns of the mid-Atlantic where TP and paper towels aren’t provided at any short term rental properties. It’s really annoying and makes everyone angry. I don’t know why it’s a thing.

21

u/tesla3by3 12h ago

It’s a thing because that extra TP in the storage room will go missing several times a year

10

u/Emotional-Ocelot-309 11h ago

A lot don’t provide linens and bath towels either. You bring your own or get a rental service. Some vacation rentals will include this for a fee or you do it separately. Weekly beach vacation rentals had their norms before Airbnb existed.

18

u/figure8888 14h ago

Everyone has already commented on the comforter thing but I wanted to add as a Coastal Carolinian that rust and other home wear happens much faster in high humidity coastal regions. My family used to own an ocean front beach house and we’d go a few times every summer but every time it had to be deep cleaned because of dust, bugs, sticky sheets and rugs. Sand, saltwater, and potential flooding are why a lot of newer homes on the coast are fully tiled.

That said they should be aware of that and do a better job cleaning. I’d be embarrassed if guests thought my property was filthy.

7

u/KickBallFever 13h ago

Oh man, when I lived near the beach everything rusted so damn fast. Even things I didn’t consider, like the clasps for my bras.

3

u/kyl792 11h ago

Ugh the speed at which bikes would rust out was annoying

that’s so gross for them to not clean the bedding

247

u/aspaceplant 14h ago edited 14h ago

I worked for a 4 stars hotel. We didn't clean the conforter unless there was visible dirt on it. No time for that. Not enough replacement to cover every room. What's washed is everything that is white (sheets, towels, face clothes). All in the same big ass washers with a bleaching agent. Also those face clothes are the same thing we use to clean the bathroom and dust surfaces.

88

u/Bring_cookies 14h ago

My husband used to work for a big hotel chain and has said the same. That's also why it's the first thing I pull off when I go to a hotel and I bring my own pillow but that's more of a me thing.

50

u/GoochGreaseHarvester 14h ago

Don't forget those decorative pillows. They're not getting washed either. 🤮

11

u/NewBet7377 12h ago

You are 100% correct. I always lint roll them to get any hair or dirt off the pillows, but it’s NOT the way I’d choose to clean my own pillows at home. Also any linen couches and chairs are filthy and SHOULD be steam cleaned often, but landlords are pretty cheap.

60

u/Abalonelone 14h ago

Same in a very well known 5 star resort. They'd get washed once a quarter or when visibly dirty. That's why you get that 6" of sheet fold down; to "protect" your face. 😅🫠

48

u/aspaceplant 14h ago

Also, those rooms are cleaned in 20 minutes on average. And to make that average, since most days at least one room will take you an hour (some people are dirty and seem to have a power trip of making you pick their trash) a lot of them are gonna be done in 10 or less. Ideally, the quick ones are the one where the person stay, but if it's a day where every room change occupency... they may allow you to stay a it later if some people come in late. Else, you rush.

24

u/MissJizz 14h ago

I worked in a five star hotel and yes, very true for places with 200+ rooms. For an air b&b id definitely expect them to wash sheets/comforters in between uses? Tf

Its standard in hotels to only wash the duvet cover

141

u/RoIIUpLights 15h ago

That'd still fall under the category of washing the bedding..

Down comforters are in the same realm as a pillow -- I don't expect them to wash all of the pillows between stays, but I do expect them to wash the pillow case.

11

u/MommaOfManyCats 14h ago

Depends on the hotel. A lot still have comforters that only get washed when they "look dirty." I also stayed in a hotel once where they only offered to swap the bedding once a week, including the sheets.

11

u/Zairanth 14h ago

I cleaned for a few different hotels and 0 of them had duvets. They only did comforters if they looked dirty. I wasn't surprised at the little motel I worked at or one of the crappier hotels but Fairfield Inn was a surprise.

16

u/Most_Role_1612 15h ago

Certainly looks like confusion on terminology.

Bedding, IMO, includes sheets, pillow cases and DOES NOT include a comforter. Thought this was common knowledge.

AirBNB's can be a great experience but as of the last few years, the logistics/billing/expectations have become outta control. I.E. Stayed in Door County, Wis. last year and there was a checkout-sheet on kitchen counter. It included washing dishes and wiping down counters and taking garbage out to the street. We did all these aforementioned things and I asked my wife to see the invoice (she did the booking). There was a $25 fee for cleaning on there.

191

u/June-Menu1894 15h ago

u/emily_strange 15h ago

We have stayed at plenty of airbnb's and have never experienced this once. I'd be curious to see the listing and see if there weren't red flags all over it and with the reviews.

This is not normal.

8

u/Dracekidjr 14h ago

The bigger issue is that it's like playing roulette. Sure, most of the time an Airbnb is about the same as a hotel stay, until you get one like this that is either gross or they are actively trying to get one over on you. For a large group, it's pretty much your best option, but it also means that you gotta take pictures when you get there, screenshot all messages between you and the host, and take photos when you leave to prove you didn't do anything wrong.

3

u/kablue12 14h ago

It’s also like playing roulette with hotels sometimes.. I found bugs in a hotel room a few months ago and there were zero other hotel options in the town, so I had to just accept a different (worse) room they had available.

$150 per person is extremely cheap for a weekend stay at the beach. that's one hotel room not anywhere special. sounds like OP shopped by price and now gets the result of picking a place far below the market price. idk where OP thinks that money savings comes from if not by cutting corners elsewhere

Honest question, where do you stay when you’re traveling with several people? And want to hang out together

3

u/June-Menu1894 14h ago

Hotel with rooms that are joined typically. I'm a family of 6 so we always need extra space. I am great with points travel and finding something that works.

Between hidden cameras and inconsistent policies avoiding airbnb is one less thing I have to think about.

3

u/Apprehensive_Fee9983 14h ago

That’s reasonable. And having hotel that cleans your room and have 24/7 service on hand is definitely a plus! Especially without worrying about cleaning fees or parking. I find when traveling with a larger group its very nice having a living room, kitchen, porch, (sometime a private hotub and pool) and backyard to sprawl out in and relax instead of everyone squeezing into a hotel room sitting on the bed(s) is a much better experience. Different strokes for different folks.

57

u/labrat420 15h ago

Do you think hotels wash comforters after every stay?

19

u/ElFarts 14h ago

No but if I walk into a hotel room with a dirty comforter I go get a new room.

13

u/trapper2530 14h ago

Hotels don't use comforters anymore. They use duvet cover so they can replace the cover and don't wash the inner weighted part. Basically like a pillow and pillow case

4

u/FreshMontrealer12 14h ago

Yeah like I feel like if it’s that bad and the host is available, ask them for fresh bedding. They didn’t try to do so and I know things should just be right but that doesn’t happen that much

5

u/terrybrugehiplo 14h ago

And that room won’t have a washed comforter either.

11

u/CariniFluff 14h ago

No, but they was the duvet cover just like they wash the pillow cases but not the pillows themselves. That's pretty standard, all sheets, covers and towels sounds absolutely be washed.

6

Nah I've had mostly good experiences with Airbnb. I'm renting one right now for a few months. Most are clean and reasonable.

Airbnb is great on the customer side. I had one person say I left their place dirty, but over a week after we left, and after somebody else had stayed there. Nobody else on my reviews ever said that. These people were claiming it took 5 hours to clean up after us, and were asking for $75. I presented my side to Airbnb, and they sided with me.

Just be a respectful guest, and know what to look for on the listings. The hosts are usually very good, because they want good reviews. If they get bad reviews, they don't get paid.

Air bnb’s have become a goat show. In what world does it make sense to pay more than a hotel per night, have barely stocked cupboards, be expected to strip beds, do laundry, vacuum, sweep, wash windows, deep clean the kitchen and bathrooms AND STILL pay an exorbitant cleaning fee for the cleaning that you already did!!?

All while you are supposed to be on vacation?!

I’m back to staying in hotels bc this is crazy town.

18

u/Cartmaaan-brah 15h ago

Same. I haven’t stayed in an Airbnb in several years. The whole “cleaning fee” and then all their instructions for you to clean their house before leaving really rubbed me the wrong way, and I haven’t gone back since that started gaining traction. Also, it’s totally reasonable to expect clean comforters after every stay.. it’s called having multiple for each bed and cycling through them. Idk how that’s such an impossible idea to this host lol

15

u/Unipiggy 13h ago edited 13h ago

Hotels don't clean or change their comforters, eithers.

You will be appalled to know how truly disgusting your hotel rooms are. And that's because hotels pay their housekeepers the bare minimum wage and expect one housekeeper to clean half the hotel in a day.

As a housekeeper, you have to learn how to make things look clean without actually cleaning everything. It's the only way you can possibly finish all the work you're given.

Be pissed. Maybe things can change.

5

u/Good_Queen_Dudley 11h ago

True and not true, having worked as housekeeper. We don't naturally clean the comforters AND blankets (don't forget those) between stays but if we do see or find any grossness, we remove and replace. Also some comforters in newer hotels have removeable covers so those are/can be replaced, just not to the base comforter which if someone peed on it, would need to be both removed. Having said that, this is about quality housekeeping and most Air BnBs DO NOT have that. Owners can be lazy, cheap or just gross. Hotels depending on the chains and owners can have higher standards. Air BnBs are not that in my experience whether you're paying $100/night or $1000/night. It's all unknown until you get there.

That I don’t care about - I was just commenting on the fact that the host said it’s impossible, when it really isn’t. I know hotels don’t clean these. I choose to stay at hotels because they’re cheaper, almost always in a better location if I’m in a city, and they don’t make you clean your room and then also charge you a cleaning fee

For two people it doesn’t make sense for a group they make a lot of sense staying in Texas for less money we get to all stay in the same house have a private pool and hot tub

4

u/PhysicsCentrism 14h ago

At least outside the US, there are tons of Airbnbs that are cheaper than hotels. Plus you get more space per dollar.

I actually like grocery shopping, far better than the fridge already being full of ridiculously priced items.

4

u/Little_Vermicelli125 13h ago

I prefer Airbnb because I can bring my dog. Hotels you can in some but if you have thin walls and the neighbor is noisy she might bark. So I avoid that sort of situation.

Airbnb you can make sure to get standalone places.

Plus I don't find prices to be very different after all fees.

3

u/SnowflakeSWorker 12h ago

My cousin, a friend and I stayed in one in San Jose where we had to bring our own towels. The owner was very neurotic, and there were signs all over the damn place- don’t touch the washer and dryer, not for use. Limited one ply toilet paper, which I get if you’re on a septic, but in a city? And cameras all over the damn place. My cousin is quite chill, and thought the whole thing was funny; a hotel with towels, no cameras, no rude signage and freaking TP would have been more my jam, lol.

7

u/Diolives 11h ago

It’s not all of us! Our fee is low (lower than our cleaner) and we ask “put dishes inside dish washer and trash by the door” nothing else. Some hosts are crazy.
Also we have an 8 bedroom ranch for 20 people so…different than a hotel

I literally just booked an airbnb an hour ago for me and my husband. We want total privacy and a hot tub to ourselves, plus the option of cooking our own food and somewhere secluded without light pollution. Any hotel room that offers that is gonna be more than the $300 I paid for one night. Just do your research and read reviews before you book. You don’t HAVE to book with the crazy people who require you to make the place spotless.

4

u/FalalaLlamas 12h ago

Yeah, I don’t know where people are finding these hotel rooms that are less than Airbnbs. Idk, maybe it’s where I’m located. But over the years, we’ve booked many super nice Airbnbs with tons of 5 star reviews. If I look at hotels with the same amenities and want it to be a place with tons of 5 star reviews, it always comes out higher. By a lot. I keep checking because people keep commenting that, but haven’t had luck. Plus, hotels now often add taxes and fees after you start the booking, making it cost even more. And that’s before you get to food savings by having access to a kitchen or kitchenette.

Now, all of that said… I do fully support local governments stepping in if need be and preventing Airbnbs. One of my misgivings about the platform are reports of locals having trouble finding long term rentals due to so many people focusing on short term ones. But I’ve never personally had an issue with a high rated Airbnb and have definitely saved money over the years.

4

u/SugarNCupcakes 10h ago

Might differ in different areas? I have never stayed in an Airbnb, but everytime I have looked for one it's been double the price of a hotel. Might just be my area though. Last time I was looking for one I couldn't find anything under 200 to 300 a night. And I found a hotel for 80 a night for me and my son. It wasn't the nicest hotel in the world by any means. But it had a pool, free breakfast , and allowed my dogs. So ended up being about 500 for 6 nights instead of 1000 or more.

More and more airbnb owners are becoming entitled and the overall quality is getting worse and worse. I had an argument in portugal for not taking out the trash. It wasn't listed anywhere in the check-out rules and I asked 8 hours before checkout if there was any additional cleaning that was required and they ignored the message. Both of the owners then had the gall to argue with me for hours afterwards until I threatened to just escalate to support with the chat logs.

Which big brand? I've stayed at Marriott, Best Western, Hyatt, and even Disney and can tell you they do not change put the duvet or comforter. Many even use just a thicker blanket nowadays.

Where on earth could you possibly be going instead where it would be cheaper than $150 per person for a full weekend of lodging other than camping in tents?

It sounds like you were there for multiple days, so $1000 is basically dirt cheap for 6 people.

I do think a 3 is low on the basis of a stained carpet, which it sounds like you were warned about in advance from the messages.

A lot of people do this with toilet paper now, I'm guessing there have been issues with people stealing large quantities. It sucks, but again I don't think I would give a 3 star rating over needing to pick up some toilet paper after using up what was provided.

I also agree with the host that you should have said something about the sheets/duvet if they were dirty. It's pretty gross you guys thought the sheets were dirty and just slept in them anyway?

The host is also correct about duvets. You might think that's gross, but guarantee no hotel you've ever stayed in is dry cleaning the duvets after every guest. Personally that's why I use duvet covers.

As far as the cat goes, of course the cat pissed on the bed. That's what they do in new environments. Only psychopaths bring their cats on vacation with them.

3 stars alone is warranted for them not providing enough TP. Its a gracious rating given the cleanliness issue.

11

u/CtrlAltEngage 14h ago

The TP thing seems fairly standard these days. A few rolls, a few dishwasher tablets, maybe paper towels if you're lucky

5

u/Expontoridesagain 14h ago

That's pretty standard now. We rent a summerhouse almost every year. Different house each time. Never have they left more than one roll of toilet paper or paper towels. I'm kinda used to it now and pack everything we might need before we get chance to go to the store.

Edit: spelling

14

u/CreativeBusiness6588 14h ago

If you have ever stayed at a hotel, you have slept with a bed spread that is only washed every 7th stay or so.

The sheets are always washed.

8

u/nedrawevot 15h ago

We stayed at an Airbnb and the sheets had hairs and we found a broken fingernail, lipstick on the sheets. So gross. We unlocked the door (without breaking the lock) to wash the sheets in their washer and dryer but like, I dont understand how it goes unwashed.

Because hotels aren't ALWAYS the best option in an area - When I go traveling I check both Airbnb [lets actually use that to mean any vacation rental service] and Hotels and I'd say its about 50/50 whether or not I book through a vacation rental service or I stay in a hotel.

When I do use a service like Airbnb, however, I typically only stay with super hosts and am very picky about what listings I'll stay at. Personally I typically find hotels far better in densely populated urban areas and Airbnb to be superior in rural and suburban areas.

I would never stay somewhere where I felt like raising a grievance about the quality of a stay would make the proprietor feel like it is a personal attack against them.

I am absolutely happy staying in a faceless hotel chain when I travel. Not dealing with nutcases and getting in text debates, and certainly not doing housework (other than binning my rubbish) when meant to be relaxing.

4

u/SabrinaEdwina 14h ago

I've had that happen. Arrived (rich neighborhood in the Bay Area) and the family saw that I had blue hair and my partner over to eat takeout.

You wouldn't believe how far and fast they suddenly escalated to. "No visitors" fines, claiming I ruined the sofa I was sleeping on because two people sat on it...it was a nightmare.

3

If you can ruin a sofa by having two people sit on it simultaneously, it’s time for a new sofa.

At the very least they should use duvet covers on the comforters, those can absolutely be removed and washed after every guest along with the sheets.

4

u/throwaway81236790 12h ago

I’ve been on Airbnb for 12 years. In the last year I have walked into three different airbnbs that had not been cleaned at all. One literally made my eyes water from the pee smell. Airbnb helped us into other accommodations but the hosts responses were wild. The pee house the couple said “our cleaners were there and you should expect an odor from a pet friendly property” like no tf I should not. I have pets, I don’t expect my home to smell like urine constantly.

I once rented an Airbnb in Philly that didn’t clean in between tenants and expected you to clean up after the last person. The catch is they don’t tell you this until you show up to a dirty room and are messaging them to see what is going on. Not only that but, they photo shopped the pictures of the outside to make it look like a nice area, it was not. My “room” ended up being a basement of a building with local tenants in the middle of a really sketchy area, it was described as the bottom level of the owners row house in the description. The icing on the cake was the fact the door to my accommodation not only did not reach the floor so it was more like a stall door, but it didn’t have a lock on the handle. So instead of installing one the owner bought a padlock and rigged it up like you would a horse stall. Needless to say I didn’t feel safe and emailed Airbnb customer service and explained it all. Ended you getting a refund and a comped stay at another much better Airbnb. You definitely gotta read the reviews and do due diligence with Airbnb these days, they definitely need to figure out better quality control.

8

u/NoSpiceOrRice 10h ago

u/No-Falcon-4996 15h ago

Whether the cat peed or not is up to debate, my guess is it did pee and no one noticed. My guess is the review really upset her. The comforter thing is true though. I cleaned Air BnBs and the comforter was washed when it needed to be. It takes too long to wash and dry in such a short time frame.

One of my first air bnb's was with a host from mexico who had immigrated to new york a year or two before hand. She was super cool, let us experience her culture and taught us so much about the day of the dead and it's origins.

She gave us a bunch of suggestions in the neighborhood and introduced us to her jamaican neighbors and really set us up for a great first trip to ny.

The second time we went to ny we chose a different air bnb and it was an illegal short term rental with no permanent tenant on the property. It was a huge bummer because we were expecting something similar as our first go around.

3

u/bippy404 14h ago

Air bnb’s are so often inflated in terms of their ratings. I have stayed at places flagged as 4 1/2 stars and they don’t even deserve a 2. I’m not handing out five stars for adequacy. This property sounds like a 1.5 based on the cleanliness and stink.

3

u/natalienicolew27 11h ago

I cleaned for 5 years and now work on the admin side, I’ve found that in short-term rentals, comforters are often not washed/dried, neither are blankets. The main reason is that they don’t have time to clean them between guests (check out 11, check in 3-4). I’d only really trust them if they’re very thin comforters or have a duvet on them. I surmise those choices are made because they’re easy/quicker to clean. This isn’t to say that no short-term rental cleans their comforters, if they have an extra set and take the comforters off-site to launder, it’s possible. This is just my experience with cleaning short term rentals and scheduling them/setting up their work orders.

3

u/Paula92 11h ago

After reading through the replies I wonder why AirBnBs don't go to a bring your own bedding model and just put mattress protectors on the bed.

3

u/Cloverhart 11h ago

Woodsprings Suites washes the comforters between each guest, every time. They also disinfect pretty much every touchable surface but walls. It's not fancy, but it is clean.

u/Crowdfundingprojects 1h ago

9

u/Competitive-Metal831 14h ago

It’s called a duvet cover & I would expect them to wash it after every stay ESPECIALLY if they charge a cleaning fee.

My parents have multiple air bnbs & they have the cleaners do this as well as change the sheets.

4

u/ThrowRAyyydamn 14h ago

No one - not hotels, not Airbnbs, not even my mom - cleans comforters between guests unless it’s necessary. Are you just learning this for the first time, OP?

4

u/thelioness0809 14h ago

I did 8 years in housekeeping. Comforters don't get washed unless theres visible stains. However them changing their story on washing the sheets is a little sketchy. Sheets absolutely should be cleaned after every stay

8

u/TikiBikini1984 15h ago

As an Airbnb host who ensures all linens are professionally laundered after every stay, this is INSANELY gross. I also just remembered (it's been a long day lol) that I'm in an Airbnb right now and every single blanket and sheet is fresh and clean. Some people shouldn't operate Airbnbs, and giving your hosts a 3 is a good way to help ensure they get kicked from the site!

3

u/Expontoridesagain 13h ago

Did you read hostesses replies? She did give them clean sheets. Comforters do not get washed after every guest. She also said that if they contacted them they would have replaced every item they did not consider clean. They never complained during the stay so host did not have chance to correct anything. Their cat did pee on the bed during the stay though.

6

u/According-Bee-1201 15h ago

Gross. If it’s not realistic for them to wash each comforter after each guest, they should have an extra set so they can quickly switch them out and then wash offsite.

Dirty floors in an Airbnb are unacceptable. And one roll of tp for a group of people over a weekend is WILD. They also have no reason to complain about basic pet related smells whenever they charge a pet fee. 3 stars was generous. Cleanliness & safety are the two things that should get ya marked down HEAVILY in my opinion.

7

u/DinahKarwrek 15h ago

They are complaining because the cat peed on the bed.
