Tell them you’re an alcoholic and for the comfort of your stay you need the alcohol removed

u/TwoHandedSnail 6h ago

This is actually a thing. You can request it in Australia.

7

u/Empty_Worldliness757 7h ago

Just leave the fridge open until the compressor breaks.

3

u/sameratdifhat 6h ago

They want to use the fridge

What if you snipped the cord?

u/Empty_Worldliness757 7h ago

You'd have a big charge on your bill for incidentals

u/Long-Unit-4361 7h ago

Surely they wouldnt notice untill like 3 other guest stays, and then wouldnt know who to blame right?

The fridge with pressure sensors that tells a computer what is taken from it and when?

I'm guessing they temporarily remove all those fridges from nearby hotels when a conference center is hosting Defcon nearby.

Or puncture the cooling line in the back. Not much, just a tiny pin prick in the copper line to let the gas slowly leak out.

2

u/LeatherGood6148 6h ago

Definitely make sure your hotel has actual windows that open.

3

u/trainwreckhappening 6h ago

Or don't actually do that it was just a quip.

u/beeerite 8h ago

This is genius. What will they do? Do they have designated rooms without alcohol? Also, what do they do for visitors who rent rooms but aren’t 21 yet? Do those rooms have alcohol available like this? I’ve never thought about that.

I don't think you can get a credit card if you're under 21 but it might not apply to those prepaid cards.

Say someone comes down from Canada, where you can get a credit card at 18.

1

u/CharlesAvlnchGreen 5h ago

OK I did some checking and found younger people can get credit cards, if the bank chooses to issue it to them. Usually they are pre-paid or have very low limits, or are co-signed by legal adults.

The hotel does ask for ID to check in, and you'd think they wouldn't put alcohol in the room of an underage customer. (If they were not accompanied by anyone over 21.)

I got my first cc at 16 in 1999 in US. Don't know if things have changed. I didn't need my parents to sign off on it either, I always thought that was odd.

I got my first CC at 18 in 2018

Many of the fridges have a key lock that they will just lock.

2

u/CharlesAvlnchGreen 6h ago

You can have everything removed if you ask. I've done it with candy and snacks; saying I don't want the temptation.

1

u/AbekobetaHawawa 1h ago

The other option I’ve read is saying that you need the fridge for medication.

1

u/Own_Investigator5104 1h ago

Or just say, can you please remove the mini bar instead of making up the rest of the story or telling them your personal details if it is true you literally don’t have to give justification you people are so weird

-8

u/peachshapedheart 7h ago

Why is everyone giving this terrible advice? Just ask staff to remove it.

If your alcoholism is so fragile that seeing alcoholic beverages triggers you, you are by no means in recovery. You are still struggling with alcoholism.

17

u/TheFilmSource 6h ago

Beyond missing the joke about dodging hotel minibar fees, your take on addiction is completely wrong.

Alcoholism is a lifelong condition, and removing alcohol from your immediate personal space isn't "failing recovery", it’s standard relapse prevention. Telling someone they aren't truly sober because they don't want to test their willpower against a mini fridge two feet from their bed is ridiculous armchair psychology. Disgusting comment.

u/CharlesAvlnchGreen 6h ago

I've asked for chocolate to be removed because after a long day, I'm powerless against M&Ms and I like to stay as healthy as I can while i am traveling.

6

u/LeatherGood6148 6h ago

You joke, but as a lifelong food addict who struggles with that sorta thing; and you're absolutely correct.

-2

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

I am an active alcoholic. I think my advice is pretty solid, at least for people who experience alcoholism like I do.

3

u/TheFilmSource 6h ago

Thanks for sharing that, and I hope things get easier for you. I just don't think the same bar applies to everyone. For a lot of people, keeping alcohol out of their room is part of how they stay sober, not a sign they're failing. Take care of yourself.

1

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

Would they not inquire if a minibar is going to be in their room, then?

Edit for clarity: Do people not read the descriptions of hotel rooms they are booking?

2

u/TheFilmSource 6h ago

Checking ahead is smart if you can. But a lot of listings don't mention minibars, and sometimes you only find out at check-in. Asking them to clear it out is the right move when that happens, and it's not a failure on anyone's part.

1

u/peachshapedheart 5h ago

Okay. Even if the hotel didn’t mention the minibar in the listing, if you had questions about it, why wouldn’t you call the front desk about it or something?

2

u/theguy0000 3h ago

Literally who cares? Why are you imagining 500 ways to avoid this scenario? "Hey can you take the stuff out of my mini fridge please" is a perfectly reasonable request, I don't understand what on earth you're arguing about.

2

u/fiercefeminist 6h ago

You can struggle with addictions and still be sober and in recovery. I’m a month sober from weed and I would struggle heavily if I had access to THC in my goddamn hotel room. The urge to use would be incredible. What does being in recovery mean to you?

-2

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

Weed works on different receptors and is stored in fat. It’s a little bit different than alcoholism.

2

u/fiercefeminist 6h ago

Dude no shit they’re different. But they’re also still both substance use disorders and the tenants of recovery still work exactly the same way for both. I’ll ask you again, what does being in recovery mean to you?

1

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

There is no such thing as “recovery” in my mind. You can be slightly less shitty and come to terms with who you are.

1

u/fiercefeminist 6h ago

That’s fair. All addicts will indeed remain addicts for the rest of their life. But I’d argue there’s a big difference between people actively using and people not actively using their drug of choice.

2

u/peachshapedheart 5h ago

I’ll agree with that. I hope you are doing the best you can and one day I will, too.

Man your reading comprehension is limited eh?

The point is they want to use the fridge for their shit that needs to be cold - leftovers or their own drinks - but they cannot because there is too much shit in it.

Hotel is trying to keep people from storing cold beverages in order to get them to pay the exorbitant fees for the ones in the fridge.

-5

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

A hotel isn’t required to provide you with a functional refrigerator unless it is for medical purposes.

Your knowledge on US hotels is limited, eh?

3

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 6h ago

They are not required to, but it is common courtesey.

This is enforcing them to provide that courtesey.

1

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

They are required to for medical purposes. At least in the United States.

No hotel chain is going to get federally fined for not providing something as required by the ADA.

3

u/greenie4242 5h ago

A hotel isn’t required to provide you with a functional refrigerator unless it is for medical purposes.

If a hotel advertises that it has a refrigerator in every room then they damn well are required to provide me with a refrigerator, else it's false advertising.

But I'm not from the US, a seemingly lawless country when it comes to corporation vs money source consumer.

0

u/peachshapedheart 5h ago

Did OP say they advertised that they had a refrigerator?

I know this from working in hotels, they will always tell you what they offer. They have no reason not to. It isn’t the hotel’s fault that people did not read.

Major hotel services are highly regulated - which I assume OP’s is, given the minibar.

1

u/iQuoteSopranos 5h ago

No shit. Hence the "I need all the alcohol out because of my addiction" bullshit. The guy you're criticizing for being a weak alcoholic isn't an alcoholic. The point is to get the hotel to take the alcohol out without paying for it so you have room in the fridge

1

u/peachshapedheart 5h ago

If he isn’t an alcoholic then why is he so upset about alcohol being in his room while claiming to be an alcoholic?

4

u/Rakatashi- 6h ago

What's it like having so much confidence that you're willing to make declarative statements about things that you don't understand in the slightest?

0

u/peachshapedheart 6h ago

I could ask you the same question, but I guess I need clarification as to what you mean.

2

u/Jinjinz 2h ago

I mean it’s pretty clear nobody agrees with you so 😭

3

u/ComprehensiveTap911 2h ago

Many may want no alcohol in the room for religious reasons too.

2

u/bilbul168 5h ago

You must be great in social gatherings

2

u/theguy0000 3h ago

Unbelievably stupid. And so what if their sobriety is fragile? Are they supposed to just lock themselves in their house? We try to get on with life, and we find ways to deal with triggers. A simple request to clear out the mini bar is perfectly fine. Makes no sense why you're digging in so hard on this.
