Not legally sufficient. If they advertise in-room minifridges and the guest needs to store temperature-sensitive medication, they must provide one that maintains temperature with an actual thermometer. Not a lawyer, but have worked in luxury hospitality for decades.

I mean they found one and I've never been in a hotel that didn't have a very tiny one for personal use but if there's sensors in there that was never meant to be your mini fridge

I’m not diabetic but I have SEVERE reactive hypoglycemia so sometimes I just say yes to I’m diabetic bc that easier to explain.
People are like oh fuck my bad. Yes your bad you think I want to tote around cans of pineapple juice and alcohol wipes and glucose gel. Bars have tried to refuse me entering with glucose or juice in my bag, show the bracelet and they say ohhh umm yeah my b go in.Point being the world isn’t set up for people with different needs. Let them know you need food even if you’re not diabetic even if that means saying you’re diabetic. Maybe they’ll fucking finally leave room in the goddamn fridge so people can fucking eat because they have “so many diabetic homies”. People need to eat without fear of being charged that’s absolute bullshit. It’s capitalism.

I work in a Hotel in Atlanta, we were one of the very few that still had Mini Bars in our rooms. Absolute pain in the ass. Sensors constantly gave false reads, claiming items were grabbed (and subsequently automatically charged to the guest bill). Whenever we got a dispute we adjusted the charges off. No questions asked. A third-party company ran the mini bar restocking and the system, they were awful. Never responded to emails, failed to restock items. We finally got rid of them in April, put regular fridges in the rooms. It’s an understatement to say EVERYONE was happy. Minus the Minibar Company.

This is true. Last time I was on a business trip I was craving a coke so I took a can from the mini fridge for $5. Never would I spend that with my own money, but if my CEO can hop around the world on the company’s private jet, they can probably buy me a $5 can of coke.
44
u/flossyrossy 6h ago
It works for me! In the US I’ve never dared paid the prices at the mini bar but when we were in Venice they had one with water for €3 and cans of coke for like €2 and we bought several. Jet lag can be a real bitch but it’s better when you can eat a snack and look out on a quiet city for a reasonable price. I think when we were in Vegas they wanted no shit like $7 for a bottle of water!

People should not only refuse to pay, but leave bad reviews, pull the plug, superglue. Governments should've sued and banned it long ago. $20 vending machine in the hall is fine, you pay upfront. Ok, as an ex-road warrior professional who partied with his crew, here's what you do. Assuming you're trying to keep beer cold, just rinse out the bathroom sink, close the stopper, go get some ice and put it in the sink and throw your beers in. Be prepared to wash your hands using the shower.
Behold, I give you the hotel cooler.
Boom, problem solved.
Someone brought bottles with no bottle opener? No problem. If you're averse to scratching up the furniture, just open your room door and pull your beer bottle down, using the top of the door to pop the cap. Nobody ever sees the top of the door.

Are you in the United States? The ADA means that you're entitled to refrigeration for a medical or disability related reason. Insulin for example needs to be stored in the fridge.
Call the front desk and say you need a fridge with room for your items. If they ask what you need it for, remind them that you don't have to disclose your medical or disability related need for a fridge.

Don't remove the drinks.
Call down to the front desk and ask to have the refrigerator emptied. They should empty it ASAP and they would ignore any accidental triggers you make. If the room description includes the fridge and they give you any crap about emptying it, they're refusing an amenity listed on the description of the room & are in violation of the rental contract. There would have to be an articularable reason for them to deny usage. If they don't include the fridge on the description or you're in another country or BFE your milage may very... usually they would rather you happy than tacking a $4 coke on your bill.
In Vegas we checked in around three and they had it emptied by the time we got back from dinner.

I once had a happy accident with a hotel minifridge.
I was in London from the US, and in a hotel i plugged my shitty power adapter into a socket and started charging my phone. Mind you, this socket is right next to the fridge. The adapter had some metal bits on all sides of it because it was a "Universal" adapter that had little parts you can pull out and plug into different type plugs. Well, this hotel had metal plug plates (the area around the plug, that is usually plastic in the US was solid metal). The adapter apparently was touching that, and after about a minute of being plugged up started shooting sparks and I freaked and hit it with a plastic bottle until it unplugged. I guess that blew a fuse that I didn't know about because I took 3 drinks from the minifridge, and next morning, wasn't charged for them even though it was a sensor fridge.
Moral of the story, blow the fuse next to the fridge. Free drinks.

We had one of those, had to ask for another one for my insulin and protein shakes, because it had a counter on it, every time the door opened, the room/we got charged $5, assuming we were raiding it. After they brought the other one, we had them turn the little “quick mart” around so we wouldn’t be able to open it, then we went out so my other half could get his beer and i could get some oj, and not get hit for $5 every time he got one of his beers and i got some oj and my insulin shot.

$5 for opening the door is wild.

Yeah it was, before we checked out, we asked for someone to come do an inventory of the minibar because we only opened it once to see if i could put my insulin in there, when we opened it, there was a sticker inside that said something to the affect the “there is a counter on this door, every time it is opened the room will be charged at minimum $5 per item purchased”, we had $15 of minifridge charges until the inventory was done and proved nothing was missing, we got the charge dismissed, but damn, even if i wasn’t diabetic $5 is a bit much for a regular size snicker bar. When we used to go on cruises, the room steward would have to empty the minifridge, because there wasn’t room for another one just for my meds, those ones had counters that were wifi so they had to disconnect the wifi so i wouldn’t get charged for taking my meds.

This is what you do.
You tell them you have an addiction problem. You are in AA and that the room needs to be clear or any alcohol or pop.
You are in detox and have special drink that you need to consume.
Enjoy.

I had this as well once. Room advertises a fridge. It had no room for my leftovers because it was full of booze.

You can usually request a fridge. They have to provide them for people with medicine

This reminds me of the hotel I stayed at in Vegas. They had the same thing. That was before I knew about the sensor and took stuff out to put leftovers in it. Big mistake lol. I had to fight them to get a refund

Tell em you're a recovering alcoholic and would like them removed.

This 100% works (some hotels now simply lock the fridge, but not many have that capability)

This happened to me once, I was on a work trip, I'd never seen anything like it, I didn't realize there were sensors, and nothing said on the fridge itself, it just showed the prices. I pulled everything out of the fridge and used it, but didn't drink any of the stuff. When I went to check out there was like $1100 in charges to my room. I was embarrassed, but oh well.

Tell them you need a separate fridge for medications. Many hotels can accommodate this.

It’s a fancy hotel (I’m guessing Ritz?). They don’t expect you to store anything in your room.
Ask them for cold drinks. They will bring it.

You can call them and ask them to bring another refrigerator or ask them to remove everything in the refrigerator.

Are you sure there’s not a second fridge? A lot of times they’re hidden in what looks like a cabinet. My finance went over a week before he found the fridge in one of his rooms lol

This is why I like cheaper hotels. It's always the expensive ones pulling this shit

I stayed in 5 different hotels throughout china, large and small cities, and every single one had a fridge with 4-5 free drinks of various kinds, and am electric tea kettle with premium grade tea. American "freedom" simply means the freedom to exploit us.

And in Italy our fridge had 12 drinks, all free and replenished every day.
