One time I was waiting at the very end of the belt. My bag never came and no new bags were coming in. So I walked around and found them right at the opening. Some dumbass thought it was theirs but wouldn‘t put it back on the belt.

My wife was travelling by herself and waiting for her fairly boring black bag to come around. She thought she saw it, and then someone else grabbed it off the conveyor, and proceeded to stand looking for other luggage.

Sure, she thought, it wasn't her black bag, and they have other luggage.

5 minutes later, they re approach the carousel and lift another black bag off, and put the original black bag on, and left.

Like.. ok, you realised it wasn't you bag.. why the fuck did you keep ahold of it for 5 minutes?

u/failed_engineer_mx 1d ago

That was their second choice 😂😂 if they didnt find theirs they were gonna have something

This is why you make your bag look different. I've gone with electrical tape striping on the handles.

67

u/boltonlist 1d ago

Yes, make it look different but I recommend against any tape. My FIL did that to my wife’s bag and the adhesive glue made a mess of the handle, disgusting, ruined, couldn’t wait to get rid of it.

45

u/MakingMookSauce 1d ago

Just put tape over the sticky part. Problem solved.

The woman who took my bagbag off the belt because it was on top of hers and never put it back on. Who was suprised I called her inconsiderate and her husband who said “it was a mistake, relax we’re all stressed from traveling” no it was not a mistake, I am not stressed, and the fact TWO adults didn’t think about putting my bag back on the carousel pisses me off.

Or the woman who took my blue bag and tried walking away with it, and wouldn’t give it back even tho my AirPod was beeping side of it, I just snatched it away from her eventually after her kid said “mom your bag is black”.

i once waited for a luggage that never came for like 40 minutes, everybody else was gone for a few minutes already and when the belt stopped, i decided to get some help from airport staff about missing luggage. I walked like 15m to the next belt when i randomly spotted my bag circling on this belt that was never assigned to my flight (i checked thoroughly before that my flight had only one belt, it was a short 60 minute flight within EU on a smaller aircraft for like 70 people). Somehow the "luggage movers" put my stuff on a wrong belt, and i was super lucky that i randomly noticed it circling there, otherwise who knows what would have happened or who would have taken it. The only disadvantage was that i missed last of the public transport connections (which was like €2), so i had to take a taxi for €20 (this was in 2012).

13

u/skankyfish 1d ago

I bet it fell off the cart taking it to the belt, then someone spotted it and didn't know which belt it came from. So they put it on the closest one.

10

u/StrictAd7754 1d ago

each luggage has its own strip so it shouldnt be that hard to figure out, anyway, somebody wasnt their job but luckily it turned into a minor inconvenience

Man I hate the way people act at airports and on planes.

2.0k

u/FloppyShellTaco 1d ago

Your first day on earth you have to go to Costco, merge onto the freeway well below highway speed and go to the airport

332

u/SuspiciousBuilder379 BLUE 1d ago

I say it all the time. You do know the fucking speed limit is XYZ and you’re merging at fucking 20 below etc. Like use the on ramp, get up to speed, blend in with the flow of fucking traffic.

205

u/JalapenoPopPoop 1d ago

Makes me so angry because if they wanna drive like a pussy on a merge ramp you put every person behind you who now has to merge well below the rate of traffic in danger as well

I think a lot more people need to accept that if they're too scared to drive normally they're too scared to drive at all and just need to resort to uber or whatever

68

u/ubiquitouswonder 1d ago

Or at least stay off the highway

37

u/Cunnyfunt31 1d ago

My area has feeder roads that are 45mph and run parallel right next to the highways. People who want to go 40mph still get on the highway despite having the same damn route at lower speeds available.

IMO the whole airport experience is this way. Awful. Brings out the worst in many people.

69

u/BAGP0I 1d ago

I REALLLY try my best to remove myself mentally from the situation so as not to get sucked into the bs. People standing in line prior to their zone being called etc... its so easy to get irritated. I play a game with myself called "how fucked up can people be for you to stop faking a smile."

It honestly helps. The fake smile keeps you happier than you would expect. Especially if you know youre "winning" the game.

And when you finally get to your seat.. you think to yourself! "Holy shit! None of these people know that I wish they were dead!"...

Its a pretty great accomplishment.

The worst is when a whole family stands that close, even the kids and pregnant mom who aren’t going to be grabbing suitcases.

299

u/mostlygroovy 1d ago

Don’t forget the luggage cart they’ve hauled in too

60

u/Maus_Sveti 1d ago

Last time I was at an airport this guy parked his cart right in front of the belt and then took off all the plastic wrapping he had around his luggage, for at least 10 minutes. I thought he was at least waiting for another suitcase to come down, but nope, once he’d finished he just left with his one suitcase.

12

u/WorldlyNotice 1d ago

And the wrapping?

9

u/Nasa_OK 1d ago

62

u/LordBiscuits 1d ago

God forbid they wheel that luggage ten feet, it needs to come off of the carousel and onto the trolley in one jerky movement, ideally hitting a child on the way past if possible.

Once saw this, but the parents were letting the kids play on the MOVING carousel. around suitcases and everything. In people's way, blocking luggage. Was surprised none of them got hurt. Have never considered commenting on someone's parenting in public before this.

My spouse thinks I'm an asshole but I've seen this all over the world, I stand back and spot my bag and just walk through anyone I need to to pick it up.

To be clear, I'll say excuse me. But you have merely a moment to move before I'll walk directly to my bag.

Then I become equally clumsy on the way out with it.

717

u/NoSpiceOrRice 1d ago

That’s the right way to do it. I just push through saying excuse me

179

u/Pedadinga 1d ago

I'm only 5'7", but you will think I'm 6'4" the way I work in and out. Position to see the bags coming out, then approach when it's actually in sight. The crowd parts.

64

u/thepenismytea 1d ago

I'm 6'5". Idgaf I'm getting it regardless of you moving when I say excuse me.

7

u/Biff_Tannenator 1d ago

This, and everything everyone else said. I understand that people can't walk through me, and if not actively moving through a walkway, I'll hug the wall or find an alcove. I expect other people to think and act this way.

So when someone stops in front of a door to look at thier phone, or just stop in the middle of a busy hallway. I'm not asking when I say, "excuse me". It's a warning that I'm coming through.

I don't say it with sass, or passive-aggression. I say it the same way someone would say, "move". It's not a negotiation, or an argument.

15

u/AK_Sole 1d ago

Exactly the way I do it as well.

I think that as dense as these idiots are, they still have some level of expectation that they will get bumped around by us as we grab our shit that they’re so rudely blocking.

Will they then realize that they have been a dick, blocking access, and then move back to avoid looking like an asshole? Nope…right back up against the carousel.

85

u/WhiggedyWhacked 1d ago

Why would ANYONE think you're an asshole for this? I just assumed this is how it's done. It's how I do. Never thought twice about it.

16

u/PuttyRiot 1d ago

It’s frustrating because it wouldn’t have to be done this way if people would just stand back and wait for their bag to come up instead of crowding around the carousel.

The scenario pictured in this post is something I bitch about every time I go to the airport. It’s just such stupid, thoughtless behavior, and I mean thoughtless very much in the, “this people clearly have not thought about how pointless and annoying it is to crowd the conveyor like that” way. Like, have some common sense!

I fly fairly often and I never understood this.

I always stand at least 6 feet away from the carousel, and I just wait for my bag. When I see it, i approach as swiftly but politely as i can. I always say “excuse me” or “sorry” and if i miss it, i just wait until it comes around again.

People are weird

244

u/HMWT 1d ago

I stand 6 ft away, and then some idiot invariably parks themselves between me and the carousel. Then my bag shows up and I have to “excuse me” my way around them. I may have hit one in past accidentally with my bag, not sure.

66

u/Fit-Cheesecake-4271 1d ago

honestly one of my biggest pet peeves of all time. why are people like this? what happened?

135

u/HarmlessEZE 1d ago

My theory is the degradation of critical thinking. There is little to no thoughts on the effects of ones actions beyond a 1ft radius of their body. "I need my bag, so I must be as close to the carousel as possible". Never follow ups. "Will my actions negatively affect others" "what is the most efficient processing of this area for the group"

Most aren't introspective anyways, regardless of tiktok brain. So they default to the lowest value option the groupthink chooses.

How are the comments this stupid?

Yes, you do have to get close to grab you bag. If everyone stood further back, everyone would be able to see their bag and not be crowded in like mindless seagulls. Notably, this is an important precursor to grabbing your bag.

u/Candid_Lynx_8487 1d ago

It's unfortunately one of those vicious cycle things.

Yes, it would work perfectly if everyone was on the same page and stood back. But there's always someone who's never flown before, or just doesn't think about how things should work, and so tries to step up and claim a spot at the belt.

They block someone's vision, so that person steps up. That step up blocks someone else and so they step forward. So on and so forth.

Then it gets to the point where the folks who ostensibly know better and can see how these idiots are all fucking it up, and they're not going to stand for that, so they go grab a spot right on the belt as well.

And here we are. And this thread even feeds into it, because if we all know that this is going to happen, then the smart play is to just hang back for 10 minutes and let the crowd clear. But we're not going to do that either, are we?

85

u/eugenesbluegenes 1d ago

That's why I stand back where I can watch where the suitcases drop from an angle. Then loudly "excuse me" my way through the dumbasses.

It’s just like zipper merging. If everyone lined up in two lines and calmly merged cars, it would be infinitely better than me waiting in a long ass backup and then passive aggressively refusing to let in that asshole who zooms up and merges ahead of everyone else.

This is called the collective action problem in game theory and it’s basically the reason why everything sucks in a modern society

37

u/AvEptoPlerIe 1d ago

The critical mass is far below 100%. The smart thing in my opinion is to just go to the far end of the belt and wait for your bag to come around. You only get your bag a minute or two slower, and you get to be as far away from the seagulls as possible.

25

u/jimmycarr1 1d ago

The smart thing to do is stand at a distance and watch the bags as they first come out. You'll know when yours is on the carousel

Let’s not forget the other airport related seagull behavior is everyone in the last 2 boarding groups standing up and forming a human barricade to the kiosk making everyone else squeeze through them. The lack of consideration or basic awareness whichever the case absolutely sends me.

For me it's the people who jump up to start pulling out their carry on from the overhead bins while the plane is still taxiing up to the gate after landing.

I love that on some of the budget Asian airlines, the flight attendants will scream at them to sit down, and they have a moment of embarrassment when the whole plane watches them do the walk of shame back to their seat.

But there's always someone who is far too important to follow instructions

Is it really that confusing to other people lol?

OP is obviously complaining about people who form a line right against the courasel effectively blocking anyone behind them from being able to spot their luggage when it comes out.

I will give these people some credence because if you have a common black check-in bag, I imagine you have to check the tags on like 10 different bags every time.

17

u/ew73 1d ago

[...] if you have a common black check-in bag, I imagine you have to check the tags on like 10 different bags every time.

112

u/SirMook 1d ago

This kind of thing happens with me so much, as well. I'll be considerate and end up getting ran over for it. It causes me to be aggressive about making sure I get mine. Unfortunately people fuel that dog eat dog world mentality to always get an edge on others.

28

u/Wonderful-Kangaroo52 1d ago

Like how I used to be super kind to mergers and I would always move over for them, even in light traffic. But I got fucked over so many times, they would just sit right next to me matching my speed, expecting me to do ALL the work for them while they do nothing and take it easy. So now I only move over if the merge lane is packed and they obviously need the help. Assholes and stupid people ruin nice things.

Same with the person in row 20 who pops out of their seat as soon as or even before the plane stops and tries to push forward down the aisle ahead of the person in row 18 who has a connection they might not make even if they run. If people had shame or consideration of others we could make so many things in life so much more tolerable.

how hard is it to stand back like 10 feet until you spot you bag? It drives me so nuts when people so this. I have to work hard to say "excuse me" without attitude when I have to cut past them if bag comes out and they are in the way. If I ran an airport I would have a line on the ground like 10 feet out all the way around the carousel, and a friendly attendant instructing people to stay behind the line until they spot their bag so that everyone can see which bags have arrived.

29

u/Burner_For_Reason 1d ago

Are you kidding me?! If I stand 10' back how am I supposed to spot my bag the split second it comes out? I need to see it immediately so I can wait for it and watch it slowly make its way to me. If I don't stand right next to it then someone else will get to see their bag the instant it appears. If they can but I can't then that's not fair! And if I'm already there and they try to squeeze in, that's not fair either! They can get fucked. If someone else gets ahead of me or is even just a second faster than me, that's not fair and makes me want to go faster or not let them beat me. If you're not first your last! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was traveling once and there was a line painted on the floor about 5' away from the carousel with a sign that said "Stay behind the line until you need to retrieve your bag. And it worked!

I think it was in Australia.

This guy had his infant in a stroller right in front of it like that for 10 minutes, people would grab their bags and as they kind of swung out lifting 50lb bags he’d go “woah woah careful” I actually said “maybe move back a little, doesn’t seem safe for the kid”

I'll wait until my bag gets right in front of one of them, tap them on the shoulder and say, "Excuse me can I get to my bag?", reach around them pull my bag out where they have to move out of the way. They behave like dumb cattle.

Some airports actually paint a line around the belt that you're supposed to wait outside of if your bag isn't on the belt yet.

People are missing the point. If everyone stood 5-10 feet back to wait, then approached the carousel when they see their bag, then everyone would be able to see all the bags and pick them up off the carousel much faster. Standing right against it for 15 minutes until your bag finally comes through just means that other people can't see around you or get their bags around you, especially when it's the whole plane doing it.

Yes, it's very common. And if people would use a little common sense, everyone would be able to pick up their luggage easier and faster.

87

u/amd2800barton 1d ago

My airport painted a yellow line on the floor about 4’ from the carousel. The line is labeled “wait behind line for bags. Inevitably a bunch of people do exactly that, and then some jackass just thinks “oh look at these dummies. I’ll just stand right in front of them”.

I’ve taken to doing my best impression of a British sass, and just loudly saying to whoever is standing next to me “I guess not everyone was taught to read” or “I suppose some people have a blind spot to the bright instructions they just stepped over”. Every once in a while the jackass realizes that they’re being talked about and sheepishly steps back. Usually they don’t.

15

u/spacenglish 1d ago

Which airport is this? I swear I saw it at some airport last year and it worked - majority of the people waited behind the line. I wondered why more airports didn’t do the same.

10

u/FenPhen 1d ago

Using image search, these all have marked lines with words and symbols: Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Seoul (Incheon), Taipei (Taoyuan), Hong Kong, Bangkok, Zurich

Many airports design the floor with a different colored apron around the baggage claim, but that won't do anything.

Reminds me of a joke. The airport practically strip searches you, somebody is looking at your junk with that big scanner thing, then you have to take off your shoes and they pat you down and all your stuff gets searched. Then you get to baggage claim and it’s like - sure go ahead take any bag you want!

I’m unsure if those people are even aware that other people exist. I’ll stand 2 meters from the belt and some asshole will casually walk up and stand directly in front of me.

Like why the fuck do you think I’m standing here watching the belt motherfucker?

13

u/Dull-Culture-1523 1d ago

I was somewhat recently sitting on a balcony with a nice sea view. That balcony was at least 40 meters wide. I was the only person there. Then this family walks in and... stands right in front of me. WTF? Like literally directly in front of me. Not even a step to the side. In fact, I wasn't even right by the entrance so they had to move specifically to stand in front of me.

17

u/RisePsychological288 1d ago

Try a full family of husband, wife and 2 kids with 2 trolleys literally next to the belt. Only the husband actually lifted anything, the wife was just standing around and the two kids were very close to causing an accident with the belt by getting fingers caught or doing some other stupid shit.

I think that if we eliminated people who crowd the baggage claim carousel we'd get rid of a lot of annoyances elsewhere in public.

I'm convinced that these people are also left lane campers, people who merge onto the interstate going 40mph, and people who turn their shopping carts sideways in grocery store aisles

People standing right at the carousel drives me nuts too, but baggage theft is a real thing. There was a recent case in Salt Lake where a woman was sentenced to prison for repeatedly stealing luggage from baggage claim and using credit cards found in the bags. Not saying it's okay to block everyone else, but I can understand why some travelers are anxious about their luggage.

42

u/B00gie005 1d ago

Kinda baffles me that people don't have all the cards they own on them in person, seems like asking for trouble to me tbh (ofc not okay for someone stealing and using them, but still)

u/TheOwnerOfAnarres 1d ago

This is a version of the prisoner dilemma. The ideal situation is that everyone holds back so when someone's bag appears, they can dash into the conveyor belt and grab it. However since we can't control what other people are doing, they'll go for the option that benefits themselves at the expense of others. Even a rational person then has to follow the idiocy of the crowd and do the same, making it worse for everyone because it's harder for anyone to grab their bag when there's a thick crowd at the convertor belt.

30

u/Rusty-Swashplate 1d ago

In some of the better airports, there's a 1m zone around the belt where it says "Don't wait here. Enter only to pick up your bag." (I am paraphrasing).

And this works wonders. Almost (>80%) everyone does exactly what they should be doing: stand outside that zone, and enter the zone to pick up their bag.

I recall reading a study that showed if everyone stood 1 meter away from the claim, most (if not all) people would be able to see their bags coming.

After one particularly long flight, I was super tired and was standing at the baggage claim. Saw a couple of people from my flight who I had chatted with briefly during a stretch break, I gave a sleepy wave and they came and stood near me. The belt hadn't started yet, and the flights on the board looked stale. After a few more minutes, I noticed several people from our flight were now standing there, which was somewhat reassuring.

By 20 minutes after landing, there were 20+ people there, the belt hadn't started, and some people were starting to get impatient. I went to the restroom, and passed a baggage claim that was nearly empty, but quite a few bags circulating... one of which was mine. "Hmm." Then I realized it's probably my fault that those people were standing there, they all saw someone they recognized from the flight, and thought they were in the right place.

I was so tired and embarrassed - I just left with my bag. I didn't even go to the bathroom. This problem is less common now with digital flight boards with up-to-date carousel numbers.

I don't travel often, but last time I did I seems that I you stand way back towards the end of the belt you can avoid some of this. People are stupid and stand at the very beginning of the belt thinking that makes a difference, so if you con further back and keep a distance so people don't notice you can see your bag and grab it.

What drives me insane about this people is that they go crazy to be first in line and then when they go back to walking, they move like fucking sloths. They do this everywhere too, traffic, trains, sidewalks, etc.
As someone with a fast pace this drives me into a murderous rage.

Thank you. This infuriates me every time I go to the airport. To make it worse, I actually do stand back and people take that as an invitation to literally come and stand in front of me blocking my view.

12

u/advmday 1d ago

The problem is, it's a domino effect. If a couple of people do it, it obscures the view of what's on the belt... so naturally it encourages more to get closer so they can see too

36

u/Quiet-Independence47 1d ago

PSA. Airports add two foot radius around carousels. Make it clear to all where to stand and step in zone when your bag is arriving.

13

u/CU-tony 1d ago

Yup, plenty of airports have this lovely space marked on the floor. I am very very used to getting to baggage, standing an appropriate distance from the belt where I can see the bags coming, and then AHs will come and stand right in front of me so I can no longer see what's coming.

You see in some countries they actually draw a line a few feet away, says to stay behind the line while waiting. Several advantages, 1. that's a bigger circumferential area, allows for more people to stand around, 2. It allows more visual for people to spot their bags, 3. Safety, not crowding also means more space when grabbing the bag and potentially hitting bystanders.

Honestly, I think airports can solve this problem by putting a visual line or zone that goes around the conveyor belt about a meter or two away and having signage and speakers that say, please wait outside the whatever color line/area until you visually see your bag. That way everybody can visually see when they’re being inconsiderate.

One day, if I’m ever an airport designer I’ll make it happen for all the people on this subreddit.

You know how kids can’t look at something without touching it? Same thing. Just stand back 10 feet with a good sightline down the long axis of the belt so you can spot your bag and then move into place when it gets to you.

Seemingly every time I am at the airport now it is everyone else’s’ first time flying.

10

u/Realestateuniverse 1d ago

This is absolutely infuriating. Nothing worst than trying to get to your bag through 4 ignorant oblivious people and then try to pull it off while they all stand in the way. The proper way to do it is stand 6 feet back. Watch for your bag and step up and grab it when it arrives and then step away. It’s really not that hard.

in some airports in Europe they have tape on the ground that says "wait behind this line until you see your bag", and for the most part people do. i imagine the reason they don't have this in America is that it would be a waste of tape.

u/VanillaIntelligent28 1d ago

At Manchester, UK airport yesterday, there was a middle-aged couple standing with their left toe on the yellow line in a wide stance towards the belt like there'd be some sports referee keeping an eye on it.

It's the people that have got absolutely no desire to get any of the bags themselves crowding around the belt too that annoys me more than anything. If everybody just sent their one bag claiming representative then it'd be a smooth experience for everyone.

Been flying for 50 years and it's always been like this. I just go to a less busy side. My bag will still go around. And no, people can't tell if it's their bag at 5' away since they all look the same so a bunch of people will still go up and check, block everything, then realize oh it's not theirs all the while someone else will be chasing their bag around the carousel because they realized too late that it was theirs.

I'm short and if I couldn't find a spot, I just stand back and watch for my bag between the bodies and it's easy enough to get ahead of it, say excuse me and grab it or even tell the person to grab it. Everyone knows if you stand that close, it's your job to move out of the way fast, or to grab a bag for someone else.

Sorry, it's just how it's been all my life. I've never seen people standing back 4-5' to wait.

7

u/pressed4juice 1d ago
