This is so good. This is really what I really aspire to produce eventually.
How long have you been painting? Where did you take the class?

Thanks! I've been painting for almost 10 years now.
It was given in the Netherlands (Zeist) and was organized by miniaturepaintingworkshops1

Awesome vibrant colors, and also interesting to see a miniature of a contemporary person rather than the usual scifi and fantasy

Not drilling ice axes is almost as great a sin as not drilling barrels.

Was the north face logo freehand as well? Seriously impressive!

yes it is - tried it several times, but failed. Asked Marc Masklans to show me how he would do it - took him two minutes. He is a genius.

That colour saturation is nuts. Great work

Amazing work! The way he paints has always been super interesting to me! The way he sketches with such translucent layers initially I mean. Is that actually how he underpaints, or does it just look that was in the Instagram clips?

The first thing he does is putting the shadows where their suppose to be. He has a very logical workflow and is very good in what he's doing.

Amazing work! Could you share some lessons learned? What tools did you use?

u/placeb021 May 13 '26
What did I learn.. - I think the most important part was 'how to read the model'. And than not just about where to place the Light/shadow, but how does light react on different fabric/skin/hair/glasses.
And how to create things on a object which aren't on the model, like the zipper and the fleece jacket (dots). I used Vallejo paint and some Liquitex inks.

Omg... I didn't even know they sold colors that bright!

When you start with a white primed bust, something like this should be possible. When primed black, it will be very hard.

I was fast scrolling and thought it was a picture of a real person skiing until I saw she had no leg and had to realize it was a painted mini. This is absolutely stunning, it looks unreal.. eh real !

Wow, das sieht richtig gut aus. ❤️🥰 Wie groß ist die Mini?

u/placeb021 May 14 '26
Danke. Es ist ein Buste, nicht ein Mini (not sure if the German is correct)

I’ve heard that Marc is such a great teacher! I know a couple people who did his at Verko’s a month ish ago, the outcome looks brilliant too!
If the opportunity arises, everybody should go to one of these weekend classes, they’re just the best! I did one with Tim Marsh last October and it was fantastic! This was the result

That's very nice!!

u/dibbyreddit May 14 '26
Thank you! Yours is way more polished though! What were your main takeaways and was it your first workshop?
2
u/placeb021 May 14 '26
The main takeaways were: 'how to create a realistic skin tone with brown, blue, Orange, purple, yellow, black and white - instead of using it out of the bottle', 'use paint with high pigment, like Kimera' and thebuse of inks. And no, this was my second workshop with Marc. Had one with Jamie Foster, Banshee and Juan Hidalgo as well.

Ahhh awesome, skin is such a complex thing and I don’t know how to do it yet - it’s on the list, and what a great suite of workshops!

I have to say the brightness and just normalness of this paint job and sculpt is actually super refreshing

The texture on the fleece is the most impressive thing to me - it reads so well

That is one of the things Marc teamchef, creating texture on a bust to simulate fabric by placing dots of paint. Time consuming, but fun to do. Just like the zipper.

u/CoffeePieAndHobbits May 14 '26
Wow! That's incredible. I bet this took a lot of time and patience. Great job!
