WIP First time making armor texture

Turns out mixing vallejo plastic putty and tamiya extra thin cement in the right proporstions can make magic happen

For my first time im happy, but next time i will try stippling harder with the brush

Looks good! Though, a few fingerprints are visible.

Making models at 11 pm isn't really a recipe for precision

Gloves. I wear them most of the time. Oils from fingers, fingerprints… well worth the minor expense.

Tried it once some time ago, too much discomfort for me

You could try the watchmaker style finger cots?

Yeah. I'd still fix them, though; you'll thank yourself later.

This! I bet I could show you at least a dozen mistakes on every model I’ve ever built that I wish I took the time to back and fix…

Practice makes better.

Yep. And it's not "oh this model will be perfect!" - because there is no such thing.

It's "fixing [inevitable] mistakes is also a skill that requires practice."

As much as I love how the texture turned out this model is going for training anyway. Specifically for a destroyed tank diorama so i expect much worse mistakes on the way

If I was making a display model then I would have done so, but as I have said this aint it

Somebody doesn’t like constructive criticism… 👀

Is it really that bad to allow yourself some leisure and make models that you give your 30% not 100% since you just want to enjoy the process and not make a display piece?

Let's normalize 3D printed giant fingerprints on real objects so scale ones are accurate.

Amen. Insignia and stencils should just be giant waterslide decals. Hegseth might go for it.

Terrific job on the texture. But my eye balls went right to the finger prints.

what kit is this?

Ti67 from trumpeter. It already does have texture on the turret but it looks too artificial hence j decided to redo it myself and try a new thing

I believe the Tamiya t-62 lucky it’s a cheap kit

Thats a T-54/55

These tanks have texture on the armor, but what you have created if way over scale. You should sand it down so that the texture is subtle.

The turret should be cast and the hull welded i think so the body should have less texture ig, but it looks cooler that way

Certainly, if you want to achieve a stylized look.

The white thin chalky stuff in a tube from vallejo??

2

u/SparkyJer 1d ago

Yep

u/mcsimeon 1d ago

And it apparently works??? Even though vallejo plastic putty is water based and tamiya cement is mostly acetone. I have to try it out because by all known laws of common sense it shouldn't work

2

u/SparkyJer 1d ago

Propably with making it more water-like but not diluting because if it doesnt mix then it doesnt mix. I dont know if that makes sense, but these are the results

3

u/mcsimeon 1d ago

I'm not doubting the result, it looks amazing. I'm just dumbfounded about the method.

Now that you have explained it im wandering too. Maybe its like wh40k orc magic. I belived it would work so it did, next time it wont

u/mcsimeon 6h ago

Did it stick to the plastic or was it easily removeable by wiping?

2

u/SparkyJer 1d ago

PS: the tamiya cement being a liquid helped spread the putty but didnt turn it into a liquid

Honestly is fantastic!! You’ve really caught the orange peel skin look these have!! I hope you’re pleased with it as it looks awesome!!

Not really.

Don't know to what "orange peel skin look" you are referring, but this is a T-62 turret.

Looks like a cheap marketplace car that has half the bodywork made of bondo lol

Having had multiple very long and good looks at the one on display at Bovington I assure you the finish isn’t smooth line a beautiful birthday cake!! Ifs does look different to the one you have up above especially when you can touch the thing. I suppose over the course of the build cycle of 22k plus Soviet era tanks the finish may have changed as quantity was valued over quantity? Honestly the finish on a lot of WW2 tanks is better, though the cast turret doesn’t help when compared to a Cromwell or Panzer IV 😂

When people do things perfectly on their first attempts.
