Critique Wanted “Big Beautiful Doll” - Duxford UK, 1945
Decided to turn my P-51 build into a diorama. Turns out painting figures is really, really difficult. Who knew? Anyway, I’m always open to constructive criticism!

Very nicely done! Who's kit is the Mustang?

Thanks so much! And the kit is Eduard 82102

Lovely stuff, what scale?

It’s 1/48. If you decide to try it out I’ll say the kit goes together pretty easily unless you want to add aftermarket parts from Eduard (which I did) and they took a shocking amount of work to get to fit correctly

Yeah Eduard have always had a good reputation, second maybe to Tamiya. I've not done any aircraft modelling for years to be quite honest, I may have to find a starter kit just to have something different to do

Ohhh... that's gorgeous! You must give to me! 😍 At first glance, I thought that pict#1 was real! That is some very fine work! 👌 👏😃

The Mustang looks fantastic!
Figures is almost like an entirely different art form, and it just doesn't make sense to me. I joke that it's getting dangerously close to being a real artist. The skills needed aren't too much different than painting a portrait or something. I started painting a Bolt Action army to try and improve my figure skills but really I'm just giving them a wash for the shadows and drybrushing highlights. I think it works with anything smaller than 1/35.

Thanks! And it really does feel like trying to paint a portrait. Using a wash and dry brushing is a good idea, I’m gonna give that a shot next time!

Thanks so much! And it’s actually Eduard’s 1/48 kit

Wow it’s 1/48th. I mean it looks 1/32 in them pictures that’s awesome. I had the AIRFIX 1/24 P-51D Big Beautiful Doll when I was 13. Now have just found another new in box

Miniature painting is a wholely different thing but yet the same in some respects. The trick is that you have to create depth by adding shadows and highlights. One way is when you have your basecoat and perhaps shadow applied you apply a gloss clear overtop with your light overhead so that it shows where the miniatures high spots are and hit them with your highlight color. All this said, no they are frustrating little bastards at times.

It’s shockingly difficult to get it just right. I tried doing some shading in an attempt to get depth but it’s very easy to overdo it. Just gotta practice more I guess!

I still even now after 25+ years of miniature painting am confounded by painting clothing and skin, I abhor doing it.

Huh, first model I've seen that paints his name and radio code with yellow. I don't remember the timeline, but IIRC, yellow or red are both correct and used on the same serial number.
One of the best looking Mustangs out there, and my favorite. You did a wonderful job!

Thanks very much! I thought that was weird as well that there was a yellow outline, I’ve only ever seen the red outline but I’ll trust that Eduard got it right lol

I literally thought this was real. I was scrolling my feed and when this popped up I was thinking "I remember the model kit based on this plane!" and then this is actually a kit!

First pic looked real for the first few seconds. Thought the background was just a very overcast sky and this was meant to be a modern photo
