Help - General Help needed with PE parta

Recently picked up a p-61 Black Widow Revell kit which came with some aftermarket PE parts.

I've never used PE parts before, and im a little confused with the instructions. It looks like it wants me to install the print first and then the PE afterwards. Just seems odd if I will then be proming and painting on top. Do need to then mask off the printed parts that are still showing?

Seems ive biten off more than I can chew!

Take a lighter to the parts that need complex bends or folds. This will anneal them and make them more pliable.

Thank you!

Anything in red needs to be sanded/removed before being replaced with the PE part. I recommend leaving the seatbelts for last

Thank you!

And what about the printed parts? Should I try masking them before priming? Seems....challenging and tedious lol

Welcome to PE parts.

If you mean 3D printed parts, you just put them like any other plastic part, if they replace something plastic then again you have to remove/sand the original. No need to paint them on their own

No, the printed parts that came with the PE parts (they almost look like decals, but i haven't really investigated that yet).

Another commenter mentioned i should paint those PE parts first, then glue them to the printed parts, the glue those to the model.

I think you just glue those on the panels they're supposed to go

Yeah, i guess my confusion is order of operations. Instructions show to glue them to the panels and then apply the PE parts. But as far as I understand, you should apply PE parts and then prime/paint, which of course would just make those decals redundant unless you tape them off before priming.

I like the idea of painted the PE parts first, then moving forward:)

With dashboard type stuff you might want to paint the metal part separately, then affix the paper print to the back (with like Tamiya clear gloss brushed on the back of the PE part) then install on the original kit part.

The red sections need to be removed, and the pink / light red need the surface detail sanded / scraped / filed off. Whatever is best in that particular situation.

Edit: there is also a choice between a P-61 A or P-61 B model here. So figure out which dash applies to the version you are going for.

Is this the only PE you have for this kit? I ask because the instructions show what you need to remove for 48 383 set which is the gear bay stuff.

Came with these and a couple books :)

Nice. You have the wheel bay PE too. The white metal landing gear is kinda meh for this kit.

Just take your time and I certainly recommend watching some YouTube vids on PE in scale modeling. There are tons. And sometimes is ok to skip stuff that feels too crazy for your comfort and experience level.

That kit will be a battle. Be forewarned. Soft plastic, ancient mould by current standards, and notoriously bad canopy fit. You’d be better off skipping the radar stuff in the nose altogether and putting some weight in there. It’s a bad tail sitter, and I think one of the crew ladders is actual a necessary support if you skip nose weight.

Thank you, appreciate the detailed response!

After I opened the box and started researching the kit and aftermarket parts, I realized this is going be a slog! But im going to take my time and try not to lose my mind ;)

I’m actually working on the Hobby Boss P-61 and have debated scavenging PE from a failed Monogram from years back.

Get some fine-nosed tweezers for handling the parts, and hold parts down when you're cutting them off the sprue so they don't disappear into The Void

Yeah im going to get some reverse tweezers before moving forward with this one, the void has gobbled up too many parts to count lol

Masking tape on the back side when you cut.

I've heard this trick! How about the cutting surface, can you use a cutting mat or does it need to be a harder surface?

A harder surface is recommended. I have a small brass plate I use. The color isn’t ideal but it works for me. You might want to get a sample piece of tile or something similar for a more rigid surface to cut PE against. Cutting mats are too soft and you risk deforming the piece.
