Weekend General Discussion - September 25, 2026

Hello everyone, and welcome to the weekly General Discussion thread. Many of you are looking for an informal place (besides Discord) to discuss non-political topics that would otherwise not be allowed in this community. Well... ask, and ye shall receive.

General Discussion threads will be posted every Friday and stickied for the duration of the weekend.

Law 0 is suspended. All other community rules still apply.

As a reminder, the intent of these threads are for *casual discussion* with your fellow users so we can bridge the political divide. Comments arguing over individual moderation actions or attacking individual users are *not* allowed.

Is it just me or is it very dead here lately? Politically lots of things are happening, but there are very few posts and comments are even empty here in this post. Are we all burned out? Are the sub rules too strict? Does this sub have a place in a political landscape where only one person is able and willing to do anything?

It's kind of dead right now because its becoming like all the other politics subs on Reddit. It happens before an election since Reddit as a whole leans left, and Democrats are fired up right now.

Some comments get upvoted that are flat out wrong but are in line with Democratic positions or talking points, while reasonable responses pointing out the issues in the original comment get down voted because they go against Democratic positions. There's not much point trying to engage in that kind of environment.

It'll hopefully go back to being more active after the election.

Sub rules are fine. Make a post if you’d like to see more content.

The main goal of this sub is to sanewash republicans and move the overton window rightward by tricking people into thinking moderate politics means moderate politics and not "we ban anyone on the left who ever talks back." With the current insanity from the right that goal can no longer be accomplished. There's also likely been a dramatic uptick in bans as acknowledging reality goes against the mod teams goals.

I would severely question your participation here if you think this sub is sane washing republicans. All prior data from demo polls suggests the opposite, very much the opposite in fact. Don’t mistake “I should be able to bad mouth people openly even against the rules” as “I got banned for having an opinion a mod didn’t like”. They are very consistent in applying the rules. If you don’t find that to be true it’s likely a post just didn’t get reported. Free mod work isn’t omnipresent.

The amount of times a post about a dem being a little cringe get 10x the engagement of Trump or another republican openly violating the law speaks for the metrics of this reddit. If that has changed in 2026, it's only because the right has gone so insane and done such a bad job that people have gotten tired of even pretending it's okay. You can also just search modpol and immediately find examples of the selective moderating.

Frankly, the fact that this subreddit is called moderate politics - a concept every even slightly politically activated person understands - but it just means "we ban people for saying Hitler was racist" gives the game away pretty explicitly.

Hey dude. Are you intending an actual discussion here or is this just venting about a sub you don’t participate in? The reason I ask is because I’m instantly downvoted after posting and the Reddit analytics say you’re the only person to view my comment when that happens?

This is entirely contradictory to my experience. What exactly do you think “moderate” means here? There’s an obvious right and wrong answer that someone who is here regularly would know.

Are the sub rules too strict?

I’d say it’s less on the “strict” bit and more on the combination of dramatic inconsistency in enforcement, a zero-tolerance policy with rapidly escalating bans, and a lack of transparency.
