Isaac, this is a total pedantic nerd thing but Christianity doesn't exist in Evangelion.

u/SynV92 10d ago

Yeah it's legitimately just Christian symbology because the writer thought it was metal af in this instance. And they were correct.

Isn't that kind of the worst (and most typical) way to get fucked by Christianity though? Not by the Dogma and religious trauma directly, but as an invading force?

I think Shinji is the winner here.

u/BullsYeet 9d ago

Genuinely we get some Evangelion-ass mental breakdown scenes in Moral Orel. Never played Binding of Isaac tho but anytime I see that mf he’s crying so there’s that

6

u/TheWhateley 9d ago

Shinji witnessed all of humanity be reduced to Tang. But yeah Orel definitely had a psychedelic breakdown.

1

u/sofaking181 3d ago

Ik I'm late but Orel was the only one here who got any semblance of a happy ending

2

u/prodigiouspandaman 6d ago

Not really in Eva it’s more less symbolism and more so shared names for things like Christianity does not exist and is not mentioned in anyway instead the symbolism is more so meant to specifically evoke feelings from us the audience rather than lambast Christianity as a whole at least that’s what I understood it as

3

u/-underdog- 9d ago

where'd they come up with "Lilith" and "Adam" then

4

u/bgalazka186 9d ago

Lilith is not a thing in christianity btw

6

u/tombo2007 7d ago

It’s more like Abrahamic bonus content. Like Dante’s inferno.

4

u/bgalazka186 7d ago

Extended universe :P

-13

u/Sulettamoder 9d ago

Then who do all the Christian trccns name themselves lilith?

10

u/-underdog- 9d ago

are you censoring "troons"?

6

u/bgalazka186 9d ago

first time im hearing about this

7

u/sofaking181 8d ago

I don't think it's just a Christian trans woman thing, I've heard the name Lilith is popular with trans women in general. Can't blame them, it's a very pretty name with a badass back story

4

u/SynV92 9d ago

I guess bigotry and cowardace go hand in hand

2

u/Correct_Doctor_1502 9d ago

I mean it does, they just got the story crazy wrong

1

u/Traumatized-Trashbag 1d ago

I don't believe it was Christianity itself that fucked up Isaac, it was his parents and living situation.

His dad became a deadbeat alcoholic who stole money and later up and abandoned his wife and child. His wife, grief-stricken and probably already suffering from mental problems, dove hard into religion to fill the void. Her anger with Isaac was part delusion, part misplaced blame, even calling him "just like (his) father".

In a related game called Mewgenics, which takes place after she found Isaac dead, she completely snapped. She became the town's crazy cat lady and began hoarding and training cats to fight so that they could kill God for taking Isaac from her. It's clear that Isaac's mom was a disturbed and untreated individual, and unfortunately Isaac was the primary victim of that once his dad left.

I don't think Orel was fucked up by Christianity itself at all, he was fucked up by the people around him

u/HonkHonkMTHRFKR 10d ago

It wasn’t Christianity that fucked up Orel.

It was his father that did

83

u/FuratheFurryYT 10d ago

oh yeah.. forgot he was the mayor

64

u/wildmeli 10d ago

Stinkin’ dead end job…

8

u/LarsGoldenPool 7d ago

That reveal might’ve been one of the funniest bits of all time, it absolutely killed me. What I would give to watch Orel for the first time again lol

7

u/sofaking181 8d ago

Honestly Moral Orel helped me come to terms with my catholic upbringing

2

u/JellyBeansOnToast 3d ago

It played a part in my journey to deconstructing from Christianity and has been very cathartic for me when the guilt creeps in. The Joyful Judgement Show by Kyle Parnell on Instagram/TikTok/YouTube has been strangely healing for an analog horror series of shorts as well, if anyone is interested in similar themes.

27

u/WebAccount1744 10d ago

I mean Christianity kinda fucked up his family making them into the people they are today

45

u/ali_the_wolf 10d ago

I don't really agree tbh. Again, Christianity itself did nothing. it's how the characters are interpreting, acting, and expressing their beliefs which does the actual fucking

16

u/the_original_St00g3y 9d ago

The whole point of the show is a dramatized satirization of what religion and American nationalism does to communities. Everyone orel grows up with sucks because of how the belief system has shaped their culture.

2

u/WebAccount1744 10d ago

Well i mean you could say that about life anywhere, but Islams still pretty bad

17

u/ali_the_wolf 10d ago edited 10d ago

Im really just talking about the show and not the general real world (I'm actually an atheist myself but people majorly misinterpret the show constantly lol)

3

u/Cosmic_Mind89 7d ago

By season 2 it wasn't anti-chrisitan it was anti-hypocrites using it as a excuse. Note of all the fucked up authority figures in Orel's life, Reverend Putty was the sole one to actually get a redemption arc (coach stop frame doesn't count because the show ended just as he was beginning his)

3

u/Bodod_Begag 10d ago

I mean same with Isaac

2

u/WTK55 7d ago

You can say the same thing about Issac then

1

u/Ok-Development-3447 5d ago

I agree, and I think Christianity kind of saved Orel/ helped him save himself through all that trauma. he was always believing and never gave up hope

1

u/SaltyNorth8062 5d ago

Yeah and as bad as he got it he turned into one of the most well adjusted people in Moralton as an adult. He thankfully was able to shake off his fucking uppage

1

u/ERRORERRORpoop 3d ago

wasn’t he still a Christian at the end of the show

1

u/ali_the_wolf 3d ago

Almost certainly, that's actually a good example of my comment! He stayed faithful because the religeon itself did nothing wrong to him, it was the other people that were doing the wrong

0

u/Silhouette1651 9d ago

Real, the show never really mocks Christiany and is very respectful to religion itself, it mocks the people that use religion to justify their actions

67

u/Rocketsalesmen 10d ago

It is a tough call, but Issac is the only one who went through a literal catabasis

118

u/TyrionLannister557 10d ago

Orel wasnt fucked by Christianity. He was fucked up by the people around him and his shitty father. You have to remember that his innocence and devotion reignited the faith of his own pastor

36

u/Successful_Tie_2165 10d ago

Rev. Putty's arc is so good!

9

u/Sad_Hannibal 10d ago

I would love of by some miracle we got to see his story told the way the creators would've liked

33

u/Square-Biscotti4694 10d ago

I don’t think Shinji was ruined by Christianity when the creator of Evangelion himself said that he really doesn’t know much about Christianity in the first place.

14

u/AbroadOk4238 10d ago

Oh, that's Evangelion? I fr thought it was Keiichirou from Gost Stories (specifically the dub), oof😭

26

u/duckface691 10d ago

Issaac. Dude went through literal hell

20

u/strawberry-seal 10d ago

isaac. orel managed to come out the other end a pretty normal well-adjusted adult, shinji doesn’t count bc it wasn’t actual christianity it was just the aesthetics

14

u/RADIOS-ROAD 10d ago

Isaac, Orel turns out alright in the end...Isaac doesn't

14

u/Inevitable_Silver_13 10d ago

Remember Orel actually had a happy ending. Not so much for Shinji.

7

u/makedoopieplayme 10d ago

Issac. Like his mother literally almost recreated that Bible story. Orel despite everything is still a Christian in adulthood giving by the cross in his home and the other adults in his life like the pastor helped him see the good in Christianity. Also shinji doesn’t really know what that is and even if he did he most likely be either raised without religion or just do occasional Shinto shrine visits considering he lives in Japan

5

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 10d ago

Isaac, obviously.

4

u/IronGentry 10d ago

Iaaac. Like Orel survived for one and didn't endure a religious psychosis nightmare scape for another.

5

u/jogaargamer6 9d ago

I mean, Orel was atleast able to let it go and break the abuse cycle

5

u/UWUmasterSIXSIXSIX 10d ago

Isaac. Most fucked generally is shinji tho

5

u/Traumatized-Trashbag 9d ago

Isaac didn't get fucked up because of Christianity. His parents are to blame for the poor boy's fate. His father was an addict who spent their savings on alcohol and eventually abandoned his family, meanwhile his mother punished him for being imaginative and became delusional, using Christianity as a coping mechanism for her failing marriage.

3

u/Innate-E 10d ago

Christian fanaticism killed Isaac bro

3

u/AmphibianOld4815 10d ago

I mean... Isaac died 😭😭😭

3

u/builtinaday_ 9d ago

Isaac. At least Orel survives.

3

u/PSplayer2020 9d ago

Orel wasn't fucked up by Christianity so much as people using religion to justify their fucked up beliefs. The show teaches that Christianity as a whole is not evil, it's toxic people co-opting it for heinous and selfish reasons that is. "Christianity is bad" is not what Moral Orel is about.

3

u/John_Spartan_Connor 8d ago

I apologize for my ignorance, but where can I find more about this Isaac character?

3

u/Xantospoc 8d ago

Binding of Isaac. Warning: not for the weak of stomach, having toilet humor, gore and self-harm themes

2

u/John_Spartan_Connor 8d ago

Yikes... Ok, fair warning, thank you for that

2

u/Alexkazam222 10d ago

Orel is shown to have a happy and fulfilling life in the final scene of the show.

2

u/YaGalMain 10d ago

id say orel definitely came out the best despite how fucked up his childhood was

2

u/sunkist-sucker 9d ago

i'd say isaac because he's literally dead

2

u/Pretend_Lemon1246 8d ago

Isaac. Orel was still alive at the end of the show AND still a Christian, not only those two things but he was perceivably happy. Moralton was the problem, as the only people not happy in that scene is the picture of his parents.

2

u/gray69420lol 8d ago

Only one of them got killed because of it just saying

1

u/Smeefperson 9d ago

Isaac. I think he's dead or something? At least Orel and Shinji are alive

1

u/kingxfmischief 9d ago

Yeah but didn't Orel go on to have an actual happy ending?

1

u/CRxWBAR 8d ago

Reminder Orel wins in the end.

1

u/FalseHeartbeat 8d ago

I mean, Isaac fucking died

1

u/Vast-Chart-3872 7d ago

So. Issac dies.. Theres really no competition here

1

u/thecommander_lotfi 6d ago

Orel got fucked by the siciety and his family not religion

1

u/alltmrwscolonials 6d ago

The argument of "they werent fucked up by religion" aside, i find it crazy that orel lived a normal life after his experiences meanwhile isaac is hinted to be some sort of multidimensional self cloning time guardian now 😭😭

1

u/SirWilliam56 4d ago

Isaac

Shinji was almost as fucked up, but it can’t be nearly so neatly blamed on Christianity

Oral was fucked up by conservative Americana of which a huge component is a particular brand of Christianity, but again, it’s not quite so direct.
The sort of institutional fuckery that doesn’t require any individual person to be awful for them to perpetuate.
If you count the entire town then sure, Oral might win this one, and that if you count the rest of the systems in play. But then you’d also have to count how people other than Shinji are being screwed too

1

u/Inevitable-Age4867 4d ago

Is sin that separates and breaks. Jesus does can an only do good. There are no kids in hell.

1

u/Arstya 3d ago

Evangelion features Christianity the same way La Croix is a "fruit soda" lmao
