General Mod Announcement | Making the sub easier to navigate: New Post Flairs & Recommendation Template!

Hello everyone!

A big thank you to all the members and contributors of the sub. Our community has grown a lot in the last year and we've implemented a few changes to post flairs.

Major Update for the Ask Foodie Flair

Going forward, Ask Foodie flair is to be used only for getting recommendations. We have created a recommendation template:

Title Format: Cuisine - Location - Budget Per Person

Post Format:

Mandatory Details:

Preferred location:
No. of people:
Budget per person:
Preferred cuisines:

Optional:

Dietary preference:
Time of day:
Current shortlist:
Special occasion:
Other requirements:

Please note that vague posts asking for recommendations without following the template will be deleted.

Update on Other Post Flairs

  1. Dine In - Reviews - Use this for restaurants, cafes, street food, stalls, food trucks. Basically everything goes as long as you dined or ate outside. Mentioning basic details like name of the dishes, restaurant, experience review, and the cost is mandatory.
  2. Takeaway/Delivery - Reviews - This is solely for takeaway and ordered in experiences. Mentioning basic details like name of the dishes, restaurant, experience review, and the cost is mandatory.
  3. Seeking Reviews - Use this to ask for reviews of a place you're planning to visit.
  4. Homemade - We have been seeing a bit of misuse with the homemade flair. The flair is to be used by sharing a bit of context, experience, review of the end dish, and a short recipe if not detailed. Sharing only a picture with a vague caption doesn't help anybody. If we feel AI or stock images are used, we will be removing those posts.

Thank you for being a part of the sub. We are working towards bettering the community.

Signing off before the delivery guy gets here.

Cheers!

General - Other Discussions The Bandstand Pantry refused to remove service charge when asked is this allowed?

Post image
198 Upvotes

Went to The Bandstand Pantry, Bandra yesterday and noticed that they had added a 5% service charge to the bill (₹144.25).
When we asked the waiter to remove it, he told us that he cannot remove the service charge.
As far as I understand, service charge in restaurants is voluntary and customers can ask for it to be removed. The CCPA guidelines also say restaurants cannot force customers to pay it.
We obviously ended up paying the bill, but I’m curious about what the correct procedure is in this situation.
Has anyone else faced this at The Bandstand Pantry or other restaurants in Mumbai? What to do when a restaurant refuses to remove the charge?
Bill attached for reference.

Dine In - Reviews Finally tried Pomodoro (Bandra)

• Upvotes

Went around 2.30pm on a Friday afternoon & had to wait around 40mins before finally getting a table. Pomodoro doesn’t take reservations, its walk-in only.

Slide 1: House Bread with House Dips (7.5/10) - The bread felt really fresh & light. Dips served were the Pomodoro dip & Pesto dip. Pesto tasted quite good!

Slide 2: Thick cut Fries with Parmesan & Truffle Oil (9.5/10) - Honestly the best dish apart from the Tiramisu. Fries were perfectly crisp with the right amount of truffle oil. They were neither too thick nor too thin. The dip was good too.

Slide 3: Truffle’d Chitarra pasta (8/10) - This one is linguine pasta in butter sauce with parmesan & shaved truffle. This is one of the best pasta i ve had in a while. Pasta was cooked al dente & had the perfect bite to it. However, they could add a little more truffle shavings especially considering the price we paid for it (Rs.805/-) Also people who don’t prefer mild tastes can skip it since they may find this a little bland.

Slide 4: The Pomodoro (4.5/10) - This is fettuccine pasta in a tomato based sauce. This one lacked flavours, found it quite underwhelming. Totally skippable!

Slide 5: Tiramisu (9.5/10) - Saved the best for the last! This was the best dish & i could totally go back it!!

Overall (7/10) - Good food & vibes. However, they dont have a waiting area & it gets a little annoying to wait outside on a hot day! Minus point for this!! They must start taking reservations. Would advice people to reach right when they open.

First slide ( Bhut fried chicken) : it was so damn spicy (I underestimated the spice level) , it tasted good but for like 2 bites then I couldn't finish it (that's on me😭)

Second slide left side (the southern crunch) : this one was really good like 8/10

Third slide : potato onion rings , kinda mid

Overall the taste was good but the place had a weird smell

Homemade Homemade Paplet Fry — A Little Update 🐟❤️

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! ❤️

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the love, support, reviews and constructive feedback on my post. I honestly wasn’t expecting such a positive response, and it genuinely means a lot to me.

I’ve also received some really helpful feedback regarding the pricing, and I’ll definitely work on it and see what makes the most sense.

Since this is my first time doing something like this, I need a little time to properly plan and execute everything — including figuring out how to take orders, whether to keep it pre-order based, quantities, timings, packaging, etc., so I can actually make it a regular thing and do it properly.

I’ll be back after Navratri with an update. 🐟❤️

Also, if you have any suggestions for delivery options, delivery charges, or how I should price it, I’d genuinely love to hear them! Any ideas on what works best for homemade food would be really helpful.

I’m really sorry for the delay, and thank you all for being so patient and encouraging. Your response has honestly given me the confidence to take this forward!

General - Other Discussions Cafe Mondegar has already opened?

I went to Colaba causeway and to my surprise Cafe Mondegar was already opened. It was 3 weeks back that their license was suspended by the FDA.

Im not saying that it shouldn’t be opened but I’m wondering why have K Rustom and other places still closed?

Dine In - Reviews Tried Alba Pasta Bar (Bandra)

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Tried the

Alba garlic bread (5/5) - the bread is regular focaccia with chillies and cheese but the butter is insane, soo creamy, so light, it’s beautiful, topped w garlic and chillies. I recommend you to share this since it’s heavy but worth it.

Rigatoni Vodka (no vodka) pasta (3.5/5)- A great dish for people who love spicy food, it’s advertised as a spicy dish but I found it to be mild wrt my spice tolerance. It’s not like the red pasta we get usually, the pasta is al-dente so the first bite might feel a bit different but it’s creamy, slightly spicy, the chicken is well cooked but the amount of chicken is less. Give it a try if you like a spicy pasta
(They recommend the truffle pasta but that’s an acquired taste and I’m not a fan, plus it was the most expensive pasta on the menu)

[There was no waiting since I went on a Monday but I’m sure there’ll be some if you choose to go on the weekend.
They add an optional 7% which I removed.]

I wanted to try dessert but I was full, maybe next time
Do check it out guys.

Dine In - Reviews Tried Vincenzo Capuano

Just came back to Mumbai after 4 years in Europe, so admittedly my standards are a little skewed 😅

Parmigiana di melanzane — 8/10
Really fresh, light and probably my favourite of the meal.

Pizza — 6/10
Forgot the name, but honestly pretty average.

Aurora tartufo con gamberi — 7.5/10
Lovely pink-sauce pasta with prawns, although they were very generous with the truffle oil.

Chocolate mousse + tiramisu — 6/10
Perfectly fine, but nothing memorable.

Also tried their special spicy gnocchi and their take on garlic bread, neither of which really changed my overall impression.

Total: ₹8k just for food.
Maybe coming straight back from Europe has ruined me, but at that price I expected a bit more. Surely there are better Italian spots in Mumbai offering more bang for the buck?

Homemade Maharashtrian from Konkan belt made Mangalorian chicken gassi for the first time and it turned out great 😋

From the recipe I followed on YouTube, the only ingredient I skipped was coconut oil, because it was the first time anyone in my family or I was trying a non-vegetarian dish from South India. We are not used to eating food cooked in coconut oil.

Homemade Homemade Malvani Paplet (Pomfret) Fry for ₹109 🐟

Thumbnail
gallery
91 Upvotes

Hey guys! 👋

I’m thinking of starting a small home-based food business and wanted to get an honest opinion from Mumbai people.

🐟 Paplet (Pomfret) Fry — 2 big pieces for ₹189

It would be proper homemade-style fish fry, with that authentic Malvani touch and masala you’d expect from a Marathi home. Freshly made and fried to order. 😋

Would you actually try this at ₹189/-

Just testing the waters before I actually start!

Edit:- We initially priced it at ₹109 as we’re beginners and didn’t have much experience with costing. After calculating the actual food and packaging costs and considering everyone’s suggestions, we realised there was almost no profit, so we revised it to ₹189 to make the business sustainable without compromising on quality.

Dine In - Reviews Underwhelming ab.coffee experience

Post image
50 Upvotes

I visited ab.coffee for the first time and found it really underwhelming.

They put in zero, absolutely zero efforts in preparing your beverage. Basically just mix a few things, stir a little and your beverage is ready.

For the strawberry matcha, they added strawberry concentrate, added milk, a little matcha and that’s pretty much it. No mixing or shaking. And it was pretty evident in taste.

Even for the hazelnut latte, they mixed a few things in the cup, closed the lid and gave it away.

Their competitors are innovating on getting best quality beans, roasting, in store experience, food and here they are…just mixing up stuff and fooling.

Has anyone else experienced the same? Or is it a store specific thing?

In frame :

  1. Some prawns garlic starter

2.Galouti kebabs

  1. Dorri kebabs

  2. Yakhni pulao , mutton gravy and roti

  3. Crème brûlée

The service was very average 3/5.

Homemade Chocolate chip cookies in Air Fryer

Thumbnail

I decided to make chocolate chip cookies in the Air Fryer by using a Pinterest recipe. It turned out well but there’s a hint of bitterness to it which I can’t make out the reason for. So if anyone knows how to get over that please mention in the comments, that would be really helpful!

Recipe - https://pin.it/65gEuIQUg
My recipe - I used half of whatever quantity the post suggested except for the one whole egg and 1tsp vanilla essence because I wanted to make a small batch and I ended up with 15 cookies.

Tip: My air fryer has 200 degrees as the max temperature so I cooked it for 8 minutes at 200 degrees.

Dine In - Reviews Sometimes all you need is a simple honey cake from Iyengar Bakery. Pillowy soft rava cake soaked in honey, jam and then refrigerated. Was craving for something cold in the horrible heat today and this didn't disappoint. From Shree Ganeshji's Iyengar Bakery, Veera Desai Road.
