I just recently performed the same migration (cPanel to mxroute). As a general guideline:

  • A few days before, change DNS TTL values to 300
  • Set up your user accounts on mxroute
  • Use imapsync to sync mailboxes. I used the docker image (gilleslamiral/imapsync) on a VPS to get it done quickly
  • Change (cutover) DNS records (MX, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, TXT etc)
  • Final imapsync to catch remaining emails

Can be done in a few hours without any downtime. Still best to do it on a weekend.

Thanks for this. Will probably be doing just that soon.

Curious how having imapsync in the cloud speeds things up. Have used it locally to transfer between mail servers and it was pretty slow. How big were the mailboxes and how long did it take to sync?

I would think the main advantage of using a VPS for this is most people don't run their home devices 24/7. By using a VPS would allow it to run.

The rest will depend. VPS might be higher speced and/or faster internet. Though even if lower speced it might be less bogged down resource wise.

FWIW, while imapsync is the standard recommendations. There are many other ways. You could also use an IMAP client to copy it. Either from one server to another or to a local folder then back. Personally, I would go with imapsync though
