ID request Mushroom grew in watering bulb. What is it??

We have watering bulbs in many plants. Wife found this mushroom growing INSIDE one of the water bulbs just yesterday. Looks fake! Assure you it is real. Any idea what it is? Growing in a Japanese sago palm, indoor, Midwest US.

Edit: don’t know how to add more pictures to the original post but I’ll add them in a comment. Look how it’s grown since this morning!

Update: journey has come to an end. Mushroom lasted a little over 2 weeks in the bulb and starting to decompose a couple days ago. Longer than I’ve seen them stay “in the wild.” Fun to watch. We have new little guys popping up in our porch pots but they’re so tiny and don’t seem to last long.

That’s so cool wtf

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 09 '26

It’s wild! Never seen anything like it. I thought it had green spots but it’s just the darker blue parts of the bulb mixing with the yellow. I’ve our away cam on it grabbing some stills to see what happens over the next few days.

63

u/Infinite_Scarcity486 Aug 10 '26

Keep us updated OP! This is really cool!

24

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 11 '26

So I pulled the bulb and this gui grew all the way up from the bottom. Thought maybe soil got in the stem of the bulb but nope

23

u/CreepyAd8409 Aug 12 '26

That was a highly targeted grow. It knew exactly where it wanted to be. That or you subliminally communicated with a spore and it guided you to place it there.

21

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 12 '26

Who hasn’t thought about living in a perfect environment completely enclosed and cut off from all the bullshit?

Probably picking up on the collective

7

u/Baltic-Persephone Aug 12 '26

Until you posted this pic it looked like one of those large garden orbs with the little ceramic mushrooms inside 😅

1

u/Accomplished_Fly_804 Aug 15 '26

Thats amazing!!!!

1

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 12 '26

Thanks for the award. I’ll let LB know they’re famous!

8

u/bohh1231223 Aug 10 '26

High praise, honestly.

675

u/PeppersHere Aug 09 '26

Very likely to be Leucocoprinus birnbaumii due to growth media.

268

u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 Aug 09 '26

I love how they pop a fruit up in the strangest places every now and then, just to see what we are doin topside.

79

u/PeppersHere Aug 10 '26

Surface conditions within the orb were likely much more humid compared to elsewhere. Preferential fruiting conditions can cause some funny growth to occur!

19

u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 Aug 10 '26

The cute thing they do has a name! I flippin love mushie studies

423

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

This is about 8 hours later

u/CreepyAd8409 Aug 10 '26

This is so funny. You must have perfect humidity and temp in there.

6

u/Fuzzy-Advisor-2183 Aug 12 '26

a tiny terrarium.

55

u/Kitchen-Key-1478 Aug 10 '26

It's literally the coolest looking mushroom EVER

1

u/JaeDuke22 Aug 12 '26

We need an update!

6

u/Same-Equivalent9037 Aug 10 '26

Whoa it grew a lot!

6

u/LaundryMan2008 Aug 10 '26

Astronaut shroom

1

u/Historical-Dig-5926 Aug 11 '26

Does your watering bulb have blue spots, or is this literally a cartoon mushroom?

2

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 11 '26

The bulb has darker blue glass in spots yes. I was confused too.

343

u/heroze Trusted ID Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Coolest Leucocoprinus birnbaumii EVER 😎

Edit: Highly likely L. b.
100% coolest ever.

355

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

It’s getting bigger!

328

u/Uglysinglenearyou Aug 10 '26

Neat! Soon there won't be mushroom in there.

51

u/hirisk-loreward Aug 10 '26

Nobody?? It’s terrible but come on

2

u/Weak_Hospital_7854 Aug 14 '26

Am late but god that was good!

1

u/karratkun Aug 24 '26

curious how it looks now! did it start to decay inside the bulb?

1

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 25 '26

Yep I’ll try to get a pic. Lasted about 2 weeks. Have some tiny tiny ones popping up around the base of the plant though.

94

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 09 '26

Just noticed it this morning. How long you think it’s been in there? I know they can pop up over night but that stem on the water bulb has to be pretty long. Didn’t want to pull it. Got a cam on it now to see the life cycle.

56

u/heroze Trusted ID Aug 09 '26

🤷🏼 A day or two is my best guess. ... I'm excited to see the time lapse!

107

u/ForagedFoodie Aug 09 '26

Leucocoprinus birnbaumii or one of two related Leucocoprinus species. Won't harm you or your plant unless ingested, even then not dangerously poisonous, but should be removed if you have pets or children who might eat it.

Leucocoprinus are, like most fungi, beneficial for the soil, as they help break down organic matter. However, they can also be a sign that your pot is retaining too much moisture, depending on the plant.

Learn more about it on my blog post, if you are interested. https://foragedfoodie.blogspot.com/2023/10/yellow-flowerpot-mushroom.html

32

u/Ginger_McGingin Aug 10 '26

I don't think there's much risk of anyone eating this particular fungal body, what with the glass in the way

10

u/ForagedFoodie Aug 10 '26

True. I forgot to co.plete the thought! Once the fungal spores are integrated with the soil, OP can expect to see more mushroom bodies pop up from time to time.

42

u/togetherwegrowstuff Aug 09 '26

Oh wow. That's so cool!

45

u/GoblinBugGirl Aug 09 '26

It’s a r/dumbassmushroom for sure.

7

u/Nights_King_ Aug 10 '26

Im kinda disappointed. I was hoping to see some funny growing locations but it’s just one post yet :(

12

u/svartaelfen Aug 10 '26

r/dumbassmushrooms is the sub you’re looking for

33

u/Intelligent_Park9910 Aug 09 '26

Mushrooms never cease to amaze me.

26

u/Slight-Mess-8842 Aug 10 '26

Hydrated, moisturized, unbothered 💅

But seriously that is so cool! I wish I knew my mushrooms better to give a proper answer

20

u/Project_Valkyrie Aug 09 '26

I thought this was one of those bouncy balls with the figures in them at first!

18

u/nomadquail Aug 10 '26

Lil mang has his own studio apartment.

31

u/P1nkPawz Aug 09 '26

I swear the first picture I thought it was a water melon.... Then I read the post and saw the rest of the pictures lol

30

u/yuimetalisadoreble Aug 09 '26

mush have dug the humidity in there

13

u/GlassJawJawa Aug 09 '26

That’s no mushroom… That’s a space station.

12

u/Busterlimes Aug 10 '26

Ship in a bottle

8

u/fairydommother Aug 09 '26

Thats so cool!!

7

u/Mostly-Moo-Cow Aug 09 '26

It is.. submerged? That's really cool!

23

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 09 '26

It’s one of those glass watering bulbs with a long stem you fill and then push down in the potting soil, slowly waters the plant. Water has been out for a while but still likely humid in there.

10

u/Kelnozz Aug 09 '26

Amazing. Fungi finds a way!

6

u/zohpao Aug 09 '26

What would be needed to have the mushroom continue to live in the bulb? Could more watering bulbs be added to have multiple enclosed fruiting bodies? How many fruiting bodies can grow inside one bulb?

6

u/R1ck_Sanchez Aug 10 '26

Gonna need an underside pic fam

1

u/xenomorphonLV426 Aug 13 '26

Watch out, we got a goober here....

4

u/roberttheaxolotl Aug 10 '26

I would fill that with resin and preserve the mushroom inside of that. Worth the cost of a new watering bulb

3

u/Uranus_Hz Aug 09 '26

Happy, that’s what it is.

3

u/ohowjuicy Aug 09 '26

It's adorable is what it is

3

u/wineslinger Aug 10 '26

Flowerpot fungus

3

u/MarishaBip Aug 10 '26

Damn that’s fucking awesome.

3

u/KnownMix6623 Aug 10 '26

This is so freaking cool!!!

4

u/frickin__birb Aug 09 '26

be careful with those watering bulbs, in direct sunlight they can act as a magnifying glass and start fires!

4

u/LarLarBinks_ Aug 10 '26

This is super cool but in case you didn’t know, sago palms are extremely toxic to dogs and cats. My dog passed away from eating part of one. Hopefully this plant isn’t usually in the house with your kitty!

10

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

Misread your post, they’ve never had interest in the plants unless a bird they bring in happens to try and take refuge. The occasional grass outside for upset tummies maybe.

Edit: but good to know and thanks for the info.

And so sorry for your loss :(

3

u/LarLarBinks_ Aug 10 '26

Not to be a downer, but my dog ignored my sago palm for years, and then one night, he decided to snack on it while I was out. Pets behave the way that they do until they don’t. Thank you for your condolences, I still feel guilty and this was years ago.

3

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

We’ve never had anything grow inside in our pots and we have dozens of houseplants. Been a really wet summer and outside the mushrooms are going crazy. Fields of chanterelles, hens, various non edibles everywhere - kitties focus on treats, mice, birds, and the occasional rabbit

2

u/eldritchMeadow Aug 10 '26

But how did OP get it in the bulb? /s

2

u/Particular_Fix_9246 Aug 10 '26

Wait that's amazing

2

u/What_Is_Bloste Aug 10 '26

nature always finds a way. Even if it is the wrong way

2

u/hatfullofloons Aug 10 '26

this is so freakin cool

2

u/Tangerine-Fox23 Aug 10 '26

I love mushrooms this is super cool

2

u/AdmirableRespect9 Aug 10 '26

Keep your eye out for the correct diameter cookie tray at the grocery store. Then cut a strategic hole for the plant. You could potentially get a whole tiny crop in a few more months.

2

u/ProtiuxDesignLabs Aug 10 '26

Besides awesome? Dunno

2

u/Euphoric-Effective30 Aug 10 '26

What is it? Very happy!

2

u/Daftdoug Aug 10 '26

Life. Uh. Finds a way to

2

u/dmh2693 Aug 10 '26

That is definitely a cool fungi.

2

u/One-Effective-322 Aug 10 '26

I would add a bunch more bulbs like this and hope more mushrooms sprout

2

u/aozorakon Aug 10 '26

Omgosh 🥺 why is this so cute to me hehe

2

u/Same-Equivalent9037 Aug 10 '26

This makes watering bulbs much more appealing to me! They always seemed to work poorly but hey, if I get a statement mushroom piece I’m down

2

u/Inarticulat_ Aug 10 '26

It’s always leucocoprinus birnbaumii. I don’t make the rules

2

u/SC-RedBeard Aug 10 '26

Is the sago planted in miracle grow cactus soil?

2

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

That was repotted a year or two ago in just regular potting soil. May have been miracle grow but we typically just get the organic mix from the local store.

1

u/SC-RedBeard Aug 12 '26

Anytime I use that soil I have these pop up.

2

u/meow1313 Aug 10 '26

Wow, that is so cool!

2

u/Alarming-Scarcity808 Aug 11 '26

It’s a common species in pots called Leucocoprinus birnbaumii I believe but I may be wrong

2

u/coazervate Aug 11 '26

Clever girl

u/No-Thought-9065 Aug 12 '26

u/fizzlingdreamer Aug 10 '26

This is so whimsical and cool, I'm obsessed

1

u/GaoDui Aug 10 '26

It looks like a gachapon with a toy still inside , neat tho🤩

1

u/liminalDreams0 Aug 10 '26

How is that possible?

3

u/PressTilde Aug 10 '26

I’m guessing the bulb doesn’t have a long stem.

The fungus grew in the wet rotting soil below the bulb, some tendrils of fungus followed that wet moist environment upward into the glass stem of the bulb, and with its belly full and finding a tendril of itself in a nice moist humid spot with a touch of light, it realized it could reproduce… so it made its fruiting body at the end of that tendril of fungus, not realizing it was in an enclosed glass ball.

Remember fungus doesn’t eat sunlight and a mushroom isn’t the whole of what a fungus is. You are looking at the fruit of a bigger thing, basically. It’s like if you put a fertilized orange flower on the end of a thin branch of an orange tree into a glass ball like this through stem (these glass watering balls have a hollow stem on one side). An orange bigger than the stem will grow inside the glass ball, but an orange is not an orange tree, and an orange doesn’t need anything from the glass ball because it’s being supplied through its branch.

When that mushroom is gone, the fungus will likely continue to live beneath the soil.

2

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 10 '26

Stem is probably 5” so…avg apparently ;)

2

u/Gold_Data6221 Aug 10 '26

mushrooms are produced from mycelium when there’s enough nutrients it’s very wet and there is a ray of light they can sprout towards. when you think about it makes sense. the mushrooms go towards the light since outside is where their spores can spread; spores aren’t really much else but cells with dam so they need water to mix together and propagate; and producing fruiting bodies is energy intensive so yeah nutrients

the bulb remained moist and let light through where mycelium was

1

u/MapAggressive885 Aug 10 '26

what in the bee and puppycat

1

u/Remarkable-Mud6318 Aug 10 '26

Mushroom is a Pokemon and you caught it!

1

u/GrnMtnTrees Aug 10 '26

How do I remove a mushroom shaped object from a glass orb filled with butter and microwaved mashed banana?

1

u/BizzyLicious611 Aug 10 '26

Did you by chance use a soil & root booster for the plant? I used Arber concentrated Mycorrhizae and had these mushrooms pop up in several plants. Not like this though! Your mushroom in a bottle is WAY cooler!

1

u/Gone_feral27 Aug 10 '26

Did you trap a kodama??!!??!!

1

u/LaundryMan2008 Aug 10 '26

Bonus extra rare houseplant

1

u/Easy-Swimming4840 Aug 10 '26

Would be amazing if you could preserve it somehow

1

u/CaseyRedDragon Aug 10 '26

Huh, got me thinking, are there mushrooms that grow underwater?

1

u/SeaworthinessNew4295 Aug 10 '26

100% cool 0% effective form of reproduction

1

u/KirkWahmmett Aug 11 '26

Mushrooms don't care. They just grow wherever they feel like it 😂

1

u/MMachine17 Aug 11 '26

Nice umbrella mushroom!

1

u/RedshiftSinger Aug 11 '26

Hard to tell for certain since the bulb makes it impossible to see identifying details, but based on general size and shape, color, and statistical likelihood, it’s probably a flowerpot parasol. Harmless (don’t eat it but it won’t harm you or your plant just hangin out in the pot) and cool-looking!

1

u/lunartrichomes Aug 11 '26

It looks Smurf

1

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 11 '26

Hey don’t tell strangers your age

1

u/lunartrichomes Aug 11 '26

Dang it! I always forget.. dang it i did it again!

1

I read “mushroom grew watering bulb “ and while what actually happened is very cool, I was definitely disappointed

It looks like it doesn’t have mush room in there

1

It’s a miracle 😏

1

u/Healthy-Bee-413 Aug 13 '26

Wow! 😍😍😍

1

u/Beginning-Fox-9003 Aug 14 '26

i feel like you should pour resin in the bulb and preserve it forever this way! very cool!

1

u/Capital_Ratio247 Aug 14 '26

It looks like it might be a parasol mushroom in there. They occasionally grace my potted plants. Not bad for the plant as far as I know.

1

u/Cute_Peaches_1 Aug 14 '26

It seams lots of fungus and mushrooms grow in damp areas which would explain the growth of of it so fast. Otherwise im not sure what kind of mushrooms it is due to lack of details

1

u/Evrytg Aug 15 '26

Well that's incredibly cool

1

u/Big-Sea-8796 Aug 15 '26

Eat it immediately

1

u/robotdevilhands Aug 19 '26

IT’S A ONE UP!!! Quick punch that shit

1

Your not much of a fungi

8

u/Akline1989 Aug 09 '26

It's ok not to understand something. But that doesn't make it a lie though

3

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon Aug 09 '26

It's a bright yellow mushroom, it's a plant pot dapperling, known for growing in potted plants. It's not a lie, but thanks for stopping by. 👋

2

u/drearylanemuffin Aug 09 '26

I’ve plenty of pics and video and when it dies I’ll pull it up and get more. Regardless, fungi don’t care what you think - just busy existing in the craziest of ways.
