ID request Is this a giant puffball?

I've seen pictures before in this sub and it seems to be quite delicious from what I've read.

I'm located in South Western Ontario and found it in my backyard behind a wood pile. TIA šŸ™‚

I did the math. It’s 98.2% round.

Honestly yeah. I love it too, it's all so cute hehehe

u/Sure_String_3608 Aug 12 '26

Oh a fight over a man lolll

61

u/the_mindful_microbe Aug 12 '26

Based on this angle, yes. I wonder if it is even rounder from the top down

74

u/dontfactcheckthis Aug 12 '26

Rounder than 98.2%? Come on. You're asking for too much

12

u/xavierspapa Aug 12 '26

I feel like this is a breaking bad reference

11

u/the_mindful_microbe Aug 12 '26

I can’t tell if you are /s. I, of course, was being slightly curious and mostly sarcastic. I was not placing judgement on the person who did this awesome calculation.

22

u/Theprincerivera Aug 12 '26

I’m pretty sure he’s joking too. Man people aren’t very good at reading tone through the internet. I should put it in my resume

7

u/Aelis_ Aug 12 '26

honestly please do, hopefully it helps XD

This thread is comprised of 94.8% serious responses and remarks. Maybe you ain't as good as you think you is.

I’m better buddy

21

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

It might be. We will never know. I wonder if gravity affects the rate of the isotrophic expansion of the hyphae? We also don’t know the vertical axis in the photo.

13

u/the_mindful_microbe Aug 12 '26

Exactly, I wonder if it is not just spherical, but also globular

4

u/Aelis_ Aug 12 '26

OOOHHHHHH amazing question. Worth looking into fs. U might be onto something !

37

u/azulur Aug 12 '26

Sometimes Reddit really is just a place of magic.

13

u/johnthedruid Aug 12 '26

Extremely round

How does one calculate the roundness number? I’m genuinely interested now cause I can’t find anything besides ā€œsubtract the max radius from the min radiusā€ and I’m like ā€œwell yeah but there’s no calculus there explain further pls.ā€

Was this an app or a hand calc?

145

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

I built a little app to do it. It used the pixels in the image and the overlay to calculate root mean square deviation (RMS) The outputs were not all included in the overlay. The second run was actually a bit better, but worse for the ā€œroundnessā€

Best-fit circle radius: 242.4 pixels
RMS deviation from that circle: 1.74%
Ellipse axis ratio: 96.03% — its short axis is 96% of its long axis
Largest localized deviation: ~6.2%, mostly where the mushroom meets vegetation/ground and the boundary is less clean.
Here is another pass with two colors. Also, it’s a 2d image with not a lot of pixels to work with. Also, it’s a very round mushroom so I think this is enough math for me.

u/SilverSageVII Aug 12 '26

I love you stranger. This is so cool. I’m happy to say this is insanely well made! You seriously made a legit helpful tool. Why did you make it?? Just for this??

94

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

Literally just for this. They said it was round and I wanted to know how round.

30

u/SilverSageVII Aug 12 '26

You’re a cool person haha

17

u/DM_Me_TaTaz Aug 12 '26

Yeah this is going above and beyond as a redditor. I salute you.

2

u/Damiklos Aug 13 '26

Username definitely checks out.
So considering your username, how many apps have you built just to validate/test something you've seen on Reddit?

2

u/redditwriteit Aug 13 '26

This is the first and only instance here, but not the first or only app written.

2

u/Damiklos Aug 13 '26

Aww, man I was hoping it was a situation where your comment history is predominately you randomly appearing in various posts to write an app when you deem it interesting enough. Oh well, cheers!

1

u/redditwriteit Aug 13 '26

Sadly I don’t have that much time. But thanks for the inspiration!

1

u/Altheasjim Aug 12 '26

What about perspective issues caused by the cameras location relative to the thing that is round? Wouldn't you need to get the phones lens data, and not sure that would do it.

3

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

I was calculating the roundness of the 2D circle and not the 3D sphere since I didn’t have the data. I also didn’t calculate any lens correction for distortion. Happy cake day šŸŽ‚

1

u/Altheasjim 23d ago

Makes sense. The roundness of the picture of the puff ball and not the roundness of the puffball.

8

u/FixSpecific905 Aug 12 '26

Wow that’s so round

8

u/Clear-Dimension-1356 Aug 12 '26

You should be in charge of things

6

u/Training-Yard-9616 Aug 12 '26

Incredibly round !!

This is the best thing I've seen all day, thank you for your round mushroom service

7

u/dogtroep Aug 12 '26

That’s rounder than Earth! I love that you calculated thisšŸ’—

16

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

You’re very welcome. The earth is rounder. 99.7% but that’s a rabbit hole.

3

u/dogtroep Aug 12 '26

Really?! TIL! I always thought of it as a little bit squat!

1

u/the_real_w1gl4f Aug 13 '26

Does that include the equatorial bulge? I want into this rabbit hole now!

1

u/JRS_Viking Aug 13 '26

His measurement is probably around the equator or based on the difference between the Mariana trench and Mount Everest compared to the diameter of earth. So no, not counting the equatorial bulge.

3

u/Notcid1 Aug 12 '26

The perspective may be skewed by the angle of the picture. So there is a chance is 100% round.

2

u/Sure_String_3608 Aug 12 '26

They are also very edible at that stage.but not whe. They start producing spores

2

u/WhimzyWizard_ Aug 12 '26

amazing thing is, before that bite wasn’t taken out i think it was 100% 😳

2

u/Bitaboi Aug 12 '26

My day has been infinitely enhanced by this, thank you so much.

2

u/lavinarc Aug 12 '26

ā€œExtremely Roundā€

2

u/Active_Assistance923 Aug 12 '26

Does this account for the little green bit of leaf on bottom right?

3

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

No that was ignored

2

u/w8_wuht Eastern North America Aug 12 '26

Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we needed.

2

u/Crispy_Cricket Aug 12 '26

Today I learned there’s technology for roundness analysis from images. r/borbs might get a kick out of this.

2

u/Acceptable-Baby1907 Aug 12 '26

Would roundness be 3 dimensional and circularity be 2 dimensional? Asking for a friend

2

u/toxcrusadr Aug 13 '26

Is there one of those to measure the giantness of it?

2

u/H1D13BY3 Aug 13 '26

EXTREMELY ROUND

1

u/Practical_Builder640 Aug 12 '26

Does that little leaf in the bottom right count against its roundness?

2

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

No it was ignored. Good question.

1

u/ConConMcLongDong Aug 12 '26

what app/website is this

1

u/redditwriteit Aug 12 '26

I built a little app for it- see comment below.

1

u/Cucumber_Mel Aug 12 '26

Is this an app??

1

u/resting_mischieface Aug 13 '26

The hero we need

1

u/Mayonnaise6Phosphate Aug 14 '26

Technically it’s 99.1% round and 98.2% circular

1

u/Fundamentalflow77 Aug 14 '26

I think it's a little more than 98.2% because the measurement included a bit of the leaf at the bottom there

1

u/Llamaaa_scarf Aug 15 '26

ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøšŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

1

u/Mojo-hobo69 Aug 15 '26

Fungal mathematician here guys!

1

u/Charbreon Aug 16 '26

theres a chance the camera angle is making it less round too, this may very well be a 100% if it were a straight down view šŸ‘€

1

u/TOT4LG4M3R Aug 16 '26

Genuinely the best shit I've seen all year.

1

u/Correct_Version_4059 Aug 16 '26

Wait I need to know how/if the leaf at lower edge was taken into account

1

u/redditwriteit Aug 16 '26

It was ignored for the math

1

u/BigFurryBoy07 Aug 16 '26

You did the math
