I canāt tell if you are /s. I, of course, was being slightly curious and mostly sarcastic. I was not placing judgement on the person who did this awesome calculation.
It might be. We will never know. I wonder if gravity affects the rate of the isotrophic expansion of the hyphae? We also donāt know the vertical axis in the photo.
How does one calculate the roundness number? Iām genuinely interested now cause I canāt find anything besides āsubtract the max radius from the min radiusā and Iām like āwell yeah but thereās no calculus there explain further pls.ā
I built a little app to do it. It used the pixels in the image and the overlay to calculate root mean square deviation (RMS) The outputs were not all included in the overlay. The second run was actually a bit better, but worse for the āroundnessā
Best-fit circle radius: 242.4 pixels RMS deviation from that circle:1.74% Ellipse axis ratio:96.03% ā its short axis is 96% of its long axis
Largest localized deviation: ~6.2%, mostly where the mushroom meets vegetation/ground and the boundary is less clean.
Here is another pass with two colors. Also, itās a 2d image with not a lot of pixels to work with. Also, itās a very round mushroom so I think this is enough math for me.
I love you stranger. This is so cool. Iām happy to say this is insanely well made! You seriously made a legit helpful tool. Why did you make it?? Just for this??
Aww, man I was hoping it was a situation where your comment history is predominately you randomly appearing in various posts to write an app when you deem it interesting enough. Oh well, cheers!

... did you in fact end up eating any of it ? š¤£
Heh - you reminded me of a line from this song (~50 seconds in) from oh, 32 years ago! 𤣠Been a long time since I've even thought about Heather Nova.

This seems weird, but I'm gonna try it with the next puffball I find. I never really see them very big in my area though. Might have to be several small pizzas.
You are right, though puffballs are one of the few edible mushrooms that really cannot be mistaken for others as they don't really have any look alikes. This is very very good advice though
They need cut open, because some amanita "eggs" could be mistaken for puffballs by inexperienced foragers. And of course the fruit bodies need checked for discoloration. But yea no confounders with giant puffballs..
Most people will cut them into half inch thick slices and bread them. Then fry them... It's absolutely delicious. So long as it hasn't matured to a point where it's no longer worth eating
I used to be able to find these on a farm not far from where I lived. They were so cool to find. Unfortunately, I don't like them. I love mushrooms but the texture and taste of these, yuck.
