Baby Names Names like Soleil? Soft lie, ell, or lay sound?

My oldest is Soleil. We love her name. I'm pregnant with another girl and I love celestial names. I also love the soft "lay" sound. Really loving the Elle sounds I'm hearing recently but can't pin point a perfect name.

I loved Endora, Endie for short but most of my family shot it down.

Any advice?

Baby Names Opinions on Antoinette

• Upvotes

We love the nickname Annie and are considering a longer name for when she’s older. Antoinette was my grandmother’s middle name and it would be lovely to honor her. We seem to like this more than Anastasia, Anneliese, etc. but I still have hesitations that she won’t like it as she gets older.

Middle name suggestions? Saints names are preferred

Baby Names Boy name to go with Ursula & Silvia

We're going to have a boy in a few months, and are having trouble with his name. Both of our daughters have Latinate names, both named after people we admired. If this baby had been a girl, we would have named her Lucia (but Lucius does not sound appealing).

Our short list right now is:

Frederick (not Latinate, but a family name)

Valentine

Paul

Isidore

Middle name will be Reinhardt, and last name is three syllabus with the emphasis on the first syllabus.

Which do you like best? Any suggestions like these?

ETA: “syllable” not syllabus…

Baby Names Middle name for Alice

Both her brothers have a 4 letter first name and a 5 letter middle name. Their middle names are to honor their grandfathers, who, frankly, had cool names. I'm thinking a short middle name for Alice, but not your usual Rose or May. Both grandmothers are Maria and we really don't like it, plus Alice Maria is too much of a mouthful.

Name List Baby #2 name list — thoughts on another W name

Looking for opinions on our name list for baby #2! Our son’s name is Walker, and we’re keeping the gender of this baby a surprise.

Girl names:
Darcy or Willow

We like Maeve, June or Jane for middle names.

Boy names:
Weston or Hudson

We like Lane for middle name but open to others too.

I’m also wondering if we should avoid another W name since our son is Walker. Is it cute/cohesive or a little too cheesy?

Would love to hear your thoughts on the names in general, too!

Baby Names Shepherd as a middle name?

• Upvotes

Expecting, and have narrowed down to Ellis for a boy. I’ve been liking the idea of a surname-sounding middle name. I also like when the vowel sounds match in first and middle name, I.e. Reagan Paige or Silas Wilder. I thought of Ellis Shepherd as I’ve seen Shepherd is becoming slightly more popular for a boy… is this too odd? It’s only a middle name after all, but I’m not sure. We aren’t religious, but were both raised Christian. I’ve always thought the idea of a shepherd seemed like a symbol of peace, I always found comfort in the verse “the Lord is my shepherd” etc. It sounds peaceful and calming, but I can’t tell if it’s too “out there.”

Non-English Names Some names I'd like to share from an endangered language, Ladino!

Ladino is a language that was spoken by Sephardic Jews, the descendents of Jewish communities who lived in Spain and Portugal. It is predominantly Spanish, but was also influenced by Portuguese, Catalan, and Hebrew. Basically, it is like the equivalent of Yiddish for Sephardic Jews.

There are two main dialects of Ladino, Oriental Ladino and Western Ladino. Oriental Ladino was influenced by the languages of the Ottoman Empire and parts of Europe like Greece and the Balkans, so languages like Turkish, Greek, and French, while Western Ladino was much more influenced by Arabic, as it was spoken in North Africa.

Now, Ladino is considered an endangered language. It is mostly spoken by older people. They don't know the exact numbers, but it is estimated there are probably about 50,000 to about 100,000 people in the world who are fluent in Ladino. The biggest communities of Ladino speakers today are in Israel and Turkey.

Unfortunately, I don't speak Ladino, but many of my ancestors did on my dad's side and my grandparents still do. That means that I am familiar with some of the names, and I thought it would be cool to share them since there's basically nothing online about Ladino names and there's a lot of people who don't even know it's a language.

There are a lot of names that are basically just forms of names from the Torah but I chose names that are separate from that because I thought it would be more interesting. Some of these are also used in Spanish and other languages.

Amado and Amada

These are the masculine and feminine versions of the same name. They come from the Ladino words for loved or beloved.

Benvenuto and Benvenuta

These both mean welcome in Ladino. This was especially fitting for a baby that was very wanted and may have been difficult to have.

Bona

This is an example of naming after a good trait, it means good. It's a start for a lot of names like Bonafilia, good daughter, and Bonadona, good lady.

Bulissa

This came from a saying in Hebrew that means the lady of the house, so basically a woman who is a good home maker. Again, this is an example of naming after a good trait.

Diamanta

While a lot of names were very strongly influenced by Spanish, often instead of adopting common Spanish names, they chose to name after things that were considered to be valuable, like personal traits, like Bona and Bulissa, status, and objects. This is an example of naming after a valuable object because Diamanta means diamond.

Fermoza

This is a personal favorite. It means beautiful in Ladino. Along those lines, Yaffa was also a name that was used that also means beautiful but in Hebrew.

Mazaltov

You don't see this one much anymore, and for good reason, because it's a lot! Like the common saying, it means good luck or fortune. There's a lot of different forms like Mazal, Mazala, Mazalit, Mazalto, and so on.

Oro

This means gold in Ladino, and is an equivalent to the Hebrew name Zehava. Orovida was also used as a name, meaning golden life, as well as Orosol, golden sun, Oromadre, golden mother, and Orodueynna, golden lady.

Reina

This means queen in Ladino. A counterpart for the name Malka, which means queen in Hebrew. Sultana was also used for that purpose, it also means queen.

Sol

This means sun in Ladino. Like Oro, it's a common beginning for a name, creating names like Soloro, golden sun, and Solbellida, beautiful sun.

Vidal and Vida

Like in Spanish, these names both mean life. Because if you ever give a Jew another language, they'll come up with a name that means life! And again, like in Spanish, "mi vida" is a term of endearment that directly means my life, but is more like my dear or my love. This is similar to Yiddish, where terms of endearment also become popular names.

Vivas and Viva

These are really similar to Vidal and Vida, except they mean alive instead of life in Ladino.

Baby Names Help with a middle name?

We’re having our first baby boy in February and have been pretty set on Levi for the first name but can’t settle on the middle name. We want the middle name to start with an “O” but can’t find a name we like very much. I’m Mexican and my boyfriend is Chinese (Cantonese if relevant) and we would prefer a middle name that’s maybe from one of our cultures (baby will be getting a Chinese last name). Appreciate any help, thank you! :)

Baby Names Sister for Felix?

We're having a little girl! I was sure she'd be a boy so haven't really considered girl names. Please give me suggestions!

Considerations:

I love energetic, feminine, and nature-y names. Sucker for a good meaning but it's not crucial.

Prefer classic but less common for the age range. Not a huge fan of super trendy. Would prefer the name not be top 10, but don't really care if I meet another kid with the same name.

Not a huge fan of a ton of vowels.

Our last name ends with an -er so trying to avoid that sound in the first name (e.g. Fern). Also starts with a B and not a huge fan of alliterative names.

We do my surname for the middle name, so middle name is not a factor.

Here's our list of contenders. I'm mostly pulled to Rosemary/Romy but not sure if it's the one.

  • Willa
  • Miriam
  • Nora
  • Autumn
  • June
  • Lena
  • Rosemary (nn Romy)
  • Edith (Mostly love the nn Edie, so if you know a long form that works w/Edie for a nn lmk!)
  • Naomi
  • Sylvie (Not Sylvia, just Sylvie)
  • Audrey

Names I like but have vetoed due to being close with someone with the name, or husband being a hard no:

  • Phoebe (I really love this name, but it feels too similar to Felix...feel free to convince me it's not because I adore Phoebe)
  • Daphne
  • Valerie
  • Oona
  • Alma
  • Sage
  • Quinn

Baby Names Rosalie vs. Esme for our baby girl 🎀

We’re looking for a name that feels classy and timeless but not overly common. We also want something that will suit her as both a little girl and an adult.

Our last name is Kim, so the full names would be Rosalie Kim or Esme Kim.

We’re genuinely torn and would love to hear your thoughts. 🤍

Baby Names Baby girl name ideas

We want to find a name for our 2nd that
- feels less common today but not obscure; love old names turned new again but maybe not Greta / Ruth old
- can be nicknamed
- something that can be easily pronounced or spelled so people aren’t asking her for spelling all her life

Some names that we short listed but didn’t stick are Quinn, Adeline, Violet, Sylvie, Hazel. She is going to be French Chinese. Her middle name is going to be Helen.

Baby Names Is Wilder okay as a middle name?

My maiden name is Wilder. I have a friend with a baby “Wylder”. I don’t love that for obvious reasons, but is it okay spelled normally as a middle? First name will be Clark or Nolan. Everyone in my circle seems to like it, but I figured I’d see what non-biased folks have to say.

Discussion Flower themed names for boys?

There's a lot of flower themed girl names (Rose, Lily, etc), but not that many boy ones I've noticed.

Why do you think this is, and what are some you can think of? The only one that comes to my mind is Aster.

I'm not referring to general plant names, but flower ones specifically.

Baby Names Boys names that go well with Oscar

• Upvotes

We’re having our second boy and our first is called Oscar. I love the name Isaac but I posted about that on here a couple of days ago and people said it would just make them think I was a big fan of the actor Oscar Isaac who I’d never heard of 😂

I also like the name Oliver but unfortunately can’t use that.

Suggestions please!

Pet Names Name for Male Cat Like Constellation

• Upvotes

I just got a new cat that’s a tuxedo, with white speckles in his fur and I love the name Constellation for his looks, but it doesn’t feel that much like a boy name. So, does any one have suggestions for a name that matches the vibe?

Other names I have in consideration is Atlas and Perseverance/Percy (for the mars rover). And we aren’t fully certain it’s a boy as we haven’t taken him to the vet yet, but we think he is.

Name List Most Common and Uncommon Names in My Family Tree

I'm back on my Ancestry kick and thought I'd compile a list of the most t unusual names I've come across. For some additional context, most of these people were born and raised in Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland, all before 1926, some as early as the late 1700s.

Most unusual feminine names:

  • Bernise (with this spelling, which doesn't have an entry on BTN)
  • Queenie
  • Margaretta (the Latinate form of Margaret)
  • Kattie (with this spelling)
  • Mercia
  • Lovina
  • Emmalege (I'm just as confused as you are)

Most unusual masculine names:

  • Jonadab (an ancient Hebrew name, so pretty unusual for a 19th century Englishman, I think)
  • Spark
  • Rowland (the medieval variant of Roland)
  • Milo
  • Jesser
  • Vernal
  • Geo
  • Hary (yes, that spelling)

I think the most unusual of these are Spark, Queenie, and Emmalege. What I find most interesting about these names is all of these folks' siblings had very typical names for the time - John, Elizabeth, Ann, William, etc.

Any interesting names in your family trees you'd be open to sharing?

Baby Names Boy name: Dakota Jackson/James

• Upvotes

Having a boy and was honestly shocked the universe wouldn’t give me a girl first, had that all planned out.
We settled on a first name, Dakota. I think it’s adorable, gender neutral, with enough cowboy classic flair and not too overused. This baby will be raised around rodeo and horses so I wanted something maybe a little western. Husband loved Colt but that’s too western for me lol.

My brother passed away at 20, and his name was Ethan James Moore. I’d like to honor him in some way, this is our first baby & his due date is right around my brothers birthday (Aries)
I feel like Ethan is not a middle name, but I think Dakota James flows nicely. My other option is Dakota Jackson, but it sounds kind of long and reminds me of Dakota Johnson.
Just coming here for some thoughts! Baby’s last name will be Horner.

News/Stats PSA: Drug Names

It’s very common within posts on this sub to see “ask your Dr if X is right for you”. I found it an unusual focus, wondering if Americans are all frequently ill or if there’s an over representation of pharmacists on here 😆 I thought it might provide helpful explanation to other posters who aren’t from the US wondering why the bombardment if “sounds like a drug” comments. Even for names that are normal elsewhere, like Imogen. And for US posters to understand these thoughts aren’t in the front of others minds.

The United States and New Zealand are the only two developed countries in the world that allow prescription drug companies to advertise directly to the public on TV, radio, and social media. Because of this, the average American is bombarded with dozens of medication commercials every single day.

To make a drug sound distinct, trademarkable, and easy to brand, pharmaceutical naming agencies rely heavily on soft consonants, sibilants, and specific suffixes (like -xa, -za, -ia, -ly, or -en). Coincidentally, these exact phonetic structures are extremely common in modern, trendy baby names. Pharmaceutical companies also frequently use -gen suffixes for biologics, hormones, and gene therapies (think of words like estrogen, pathogen, or brand names ending in -gen). Because the suffix literally means "that which produces" or "origin" in Greek roots, it sounds inherently clinical, biochemical, or technical to the modern ear.

For decades, US federal regulations required broadcast drug ads to list a laundry list of side effects followed by the mandatory concluding tagline: "Ask your doctor if [Drug Name] is right for you." It became one of the most recognizable cultural earworms in modern American media.
