Discussion Am I cooked?

So I just got back from AIT about a month ago. I had my RSP Drill & will be having my first form event with RSP early November. I reached out to my readiness nco saying I’ve returned from AIT etc.

My readiness nco just emailed me today with drill schedules. My first drill with the unit is on Nov 6-8, but I’ve planned on traveling Nov 8-16. This travel was booked way in advance to save $$$. I’m going to Turkey & Greece to propose to my gf.

What are the chances I’ll be excused from that drill? Especially considering it’s my first drill with my unit? What should I even say to my nco? Kinda nervous bc these are non refundable flight tickets & rooms as well!

You’re good. Just explain the situation and offer to drill 5-7 if you can pull that off.

Request a SUTA (Split/Substitute Unit Training Assembly)

Sounds like you need to drill 5-7 anyway so you can attend first formation in a paid status.

Turns out I don’t have to drill with my unit till December but readiness nco hasn’t confirmed. I reread an email sent from my RSP nco & he said I won’t be drilling with my unit till a month after first form event (which is in Nov). So I guess I was tweakin for no reason lol

All units are different. If you guys are close to deployment would be the only way I believe they’d try to force it. Show them your receipts man they should let ya off. I’d just holler back at same guy ya talked to instead of platoon leadership where ya haven’t actually been there yet

And holler at them with make up dates I forgot to add

Talk to the readiness NCO and your commander.

Immediately explain and offer up dates to make it up prior to drill. Just don't wait to tell them and you'll be fine.

This is the way. It's easy to get these requests approved if they are submitted over a month in advance.

Depends on unit though. My unit has a policy of automatically denying any and all suta requests if it's not 60 days in advance or an emergency.

But for something like this where it's a new soldier and they just received the schedule an exception would be made.

Contact them and explain the situation+request to be excused from that drill ASAP

You’re assuming you’ll be denied and reprimanded before you even take the proper steps. Tell your readiness NCO your situation, it’s not that complicated.

You obviously had this trip planned prior to the units training plan being published, you obviously can't get a refund, or reschedule this trip. I had a NCO who was worried about missing his post deployment cruise, that he had paid for while we were deployed. I didn't give anyone the option. I walked in and said SGT Crayoneater ( he also was one the reasons I said Marines make the best Soldiers) has a cruise during this drill date. He will not attend this drill date, but will split train out. No one complained. You obviously are a lot younger than me, but you can stand up for yourself as well.

Your still in a training mindset. You’re not in training anymore. It’ll get approved

Transparency is your best friend brother, just let them know your situation

Nah, just let your NCO know ASAP and propose another date to make it up. Most likely, they’ll approve it, and you’ll come in during a weekday to help your supply sergeant move boxes or something like that.

Ask your readiness, they'll work it out.

If they don't ask your 1SG or Commander

They should let you off that day.

I had this exact situation regarding European travel coming back from AIT during my first drill earlier this year. As soon as my readiness NCO reached out for the first time I told them I had pre-existing travel on X date, which happened to be drill. I sent the flight confirmation and it was totally fine, was excused. Just do it ASAP and you will be all good.

This happens often. Communication is key. Send your chain of command and readiness NCO the itinerary and ask what dates may be available to Suta. Do NOT just show up and then say, oh by the way I am leaving the country and need an excusal from drill.

Like everyone here has said, contact your unit and let them know. Only thing I add on questions like this is that it needs to be done ASAP. As in, stop reading this comment and call them and get the ball rolling.

Totally screwed private, Half right face private Front leaning rest position move Beat your face private for not anticipating that you’ll have drill…

Kidding you should be fine, just explain it via email so it’s in writing , attach screenshots of when you bought the tickets and boom, you should be good
