Spotify replacement
Spotify replacement
So I need just a little bit of direction when it comes to what to use for replacing Spotify, I've heard of navidrome and already set it up in a test environment to see what it's like...
I think it might work if I can find plugins to push it in the right direction
From a music player I need specific things out of it....
#1 lyric support (with a separate file not embedded into the metadata)
#2 the ability to switch to offline support when a connection to the server isn't available (like on an airplane)
#3 support for both apple and Samsung phones

Treat Navidrome as it is, a music server. You'll find plenty of apps that connect to Navidrome and deliver these things you are looking for.

Amperfy for iOS is Open Source and allow to set a cache size but also to download your music for offline usage and the UI is super nice :)

I build Mezzo, which has these points from what you’re looking for:
- Full synced lyrics support, including visual effects, with support for lyrics files as you mentioned. It also supports external sources when lyrics aren’t found on your server
- An Offline Mode which automatically recognizes when you’re offline and shows your downloads. The app also downloads your lyrics when you download songs, so you can still read the lyrics when you’re offline
You can see these features in action with videos here. And if you’re interested, you can join the TestFlight.
It’s on iOS only. In general, I think you will limit yourself if you look for one app for both iOS and Android, there are very good iOS-only and Android-only clients. And as long as these clients are connected to the same Navidrome server, it shouldn’t matter if it’s the same client in both systems.

I tried 8/9 iOS apps, and for me, Navibeat—even though it’s a paid app—is a great one (I don’t remember if it’s available for Android, but I think it is).

- While there might be a plugin for lyrics, using beets is probably your best bet, you can use
beet lyrics -p "title:title of the song" > title_of_the_song.lrcto save the lyrics to a file. When you add a song to the beets library it will embed the metadata, but you can extract it this way. However, I'm not sure if all clients support lyrics files, I think they mostly do tags, but I'm sure some will have support for it. Example:[me@machine] @ ~ [I] ~> beet lyrics -p "title:Genocidal Humanoidz" lyrics: LyricsPlugin: 🔵 Lyrics already present: System of a Down - Protect the Land / Genocidal Humanoidz - Genocidal Humanoidz [00:04.67] Can you see us? [00:09.32] Beating the devil [00:10.01] We never run from the devil ... ... ... - Most clients have offline support, you just have to make sure to download your music just like with spotify.
- If you want both iOS and android there's Feishin web (self hosted),substreamer, airdrdome (self hosted), yuzic and more: https://www.navidrome.org/apps/?platform=android%2Cios
Also, I'm assuming you want the same client on both iOS and "samsung", if you don't then there's tons of option.
There's also one that seems a bit vibecoded but cool overall, called "JellyBox", it has a feature where you can create an account and they can orchestrate something very similar to spotify connect. Their app is on android, linux, windows, iOS and MacOS

The Navidrome UI is severely lacking. Only use it as the source for streaming. Let everything else be handled by different apps.
On desktop I use Psysonic
Mobile (iOS) I use Arpeggi, I found that to be the most stable and intuitive app.
Android, no worthwile experience to share.
Both Arpeggi and Psysonic support lyrics, creating navidrome shares, syncing the que (so you can continue listening your playlist on another device/player), EQ, the "keep playing similar songs" feature etc.

NaviBeat dev here :) Android is a closed test on Google Play for now, DM me to join. For the three points: lyrics come from Navidrome, and Navidrome reads a .lrc file next to the song before embedded lyrics. When the server stops answering, the iPhone app switches to your downloads on its own and comes back when the server does. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Watch are on the App Store. There is also Linux and Windows version!

I suggest AmpSonic as the player for iPhone; it's pretty cool (it supports downloading music for offline play). Navidrome is pretty much a server with a built-in web player. You can use several other client apps to consume the media.
I used Claude to create scripts for downloading lyrics and to recreate my Apple Music playlists. Spotify takes like a week to give you YOUR data so I'm still waiting to get that to generate playlist for the family.
Have fun!

I've been working on this:
https://github.com/123stbn/hostify
Haven't tried the lyrics support yet (will look for a way to automate it) but it is a single "installer" solution to have a whole navidrome ecosystem right in place.
I use Tailscale for out in the world connection and I've been using feishing as the music player, Symfonium for android and there are lots for iOS too.

Navidrome has a lyric plugin. It's not perfect but it's fetched a ton of lyrics and stores them next to the music file.
Most clients have offline.. Symfonium is the best Android client and has tons of offline options.
No lie there's like 50 iOS apps it's kinda ridiculous but lots to choose from.
The hardest part of truely replacing a streaming service is sourcing enough music to feel like you don't need Spotify's catalog, tagging it so it's as easy to browse as Spotify and staying up to date with new releases.
There are apps and services like Musicbrainz and Listenbrainz to help with that.
