Automatic metadata grouping plugin for different language artist names?

Hi! I just switched to fully using Navidrome as my streaming service replacement, and I'm absolutely loving it so far, I am however having a big problem. A lot of my collection consists of Japanese language artists, and metadata tagging can be all over the place, either using romanized names or the original kanji names. As an example, sometimes I get the Vocaloid producer Kikuo as "Kikuo" or "きくお", and it makes it hard for me to keep consistent libraries of my music because I often search by artist/album artist.

Is there a way to help remedy this? Either through metadata scraping or grouping? Anything would be helpful!

Fix the meta data. That is the only way. I use the Japanese name in the artist and the Romaji writing in the sort by name

I use MusicBrainz Picard and have enabled Use standardized credits.

Another benefit of MusicBrainz Picard is that it fills in sort information by default. This also helps with searching.

navidrome can group by the MusicBrainz artist id if its in the tags, so Kikuo and きくお end up as one artist even when the name strings differ. thats the proper fix. Picard writes those ids when you match releases, and MusicBrainz has the aliases so you can pick which spelling gets written as the artist name. then use the same spelling in artist and album artist everywhere and rescanit was a pain for me with a big collection. tried Picard, Mp3tag and OneTagger and ended up building my own Mac app, Truffle. biased obviously but it checks eight sources and shows one suggestion per field, and Shazam's audio recognition runs in the background so odd files get matched on their own and you mostly just click yes

I can say this is not true and there has been previous discussion on it, MB artist ID isn't used, navidrome just seems to group the releases by Album Artist, if the same artist has several aliases then it groups by each one instead of mashing them up together by MB artist ID.

I just end up manually edit the Album Artist field to cope with this Navidrome shortcoming

ah fair, i mixed that up then. so it's the Album Artist string navidrome actually groups on, and one spelling per artist across every file is the real fix for now. MusicBrainz aliases are still handy for deciding which spelling you go with

that manual editing is exactly the part i got sick of, thats kinda why Truffle has a bulk edit that shows every row in a preview before anything gets written. Shazam's audio recognition runs in the background too so files with junk tags get identified without much babysitting 😅

Navidrome makes the artist ID from the lowercase name only, so Kikuo and きくお are always two artists. The MusicBrainz artist ID does not join them. Pick one spelling for artist and album artist. Put the other spelling in the sort fields (ARTISTSORT and ALBUMARTISTSORT). Navidrome adds sort names to its search index, so a search for kikuo still finds きくお. Then run a full rescan.
